Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 12, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
First Microsoft unveiled Bing, an innovative new approach to search designed to provide you with as much information as possible to keep you engaged within the portal itself. Soon after Yahoo outsourced its search duties to Microsoft in a long awaited partnership. Even Facebook is getting into realtime search (see below). Rest assured that Google is not standing still. The search giant has begun soliciting feedback on its next generation search product, codenamed “Caffeine,” that jolts users with an enhanced architecture to improve speed, accuracy, scope and timeliness of search queries. Google is asking users to try the new version alongside the current version then click on the “Dissatisfied?” tab to insert feedback.

Following along the footsteps of Tivo and Netflix, iTV middleware giant OpenTV is teaming with discovery engine provider Jinni to bring search and recommendation functionality to the realm of the cable MSO-provided set-top box. Jinni’s “mood based” technology analyzes video content by moods and plots and generates recommendations based on modeling personal preferences. OpenTV Core2’s integrated search feature will allow viewers to find content across multiple sources as well as get programming recommendations based on personal tastes. The interface, which will be demoed at IBC 2009 in Amsterdam next month, also provides choices based on what viewers feel like watching, such as a “thrilling, film noir, dark comedy.”

A total of 18 of the company’s 20 local station sites will launch on the BIM platform by the end of the year.

This shouldn’t come as a shock, but online video junkies are getting their fix in the workplace in increasing volume and the hours around lunchtime, between 12-3pm constitute prime time, according to a new study conducted by Interpret LLC. Commissioned by Yahoo, Havas Digital, Warner Bros. Media Research, and PHD, the study also found spikes during late night hours between 9pm and midnight, and found that the lowest amount of viewing occurs during the dinner hours of 6-9pm. The group came up with a new “engagement model” to help publishers identify which videos are working online and how the can be best monetized. The model takes into account completion rates, attention to content and actions taken, including commenting, rating and sharing. According to the study high engagement translates to better recall of ads:
- 27% of respondents who remembered seeing an ad searched for more information about the product after watching high engagement videos, vs. only 13% for low engagement videos
- 28% visited an advertised brand or product’s website after viewing a high engagement
- video versus only 10% for low engagement videos
- High engagement videos account for nearly half (47%) of ad recall
The global mobile gaming market is expected to grow at a 16.6% clip to reach $18 billion in 2014, driven by the explosive mobile subscriber growth in emerging markets, according to the latest report from Light Reading’s Pyramid Research. Privacy continues to be a crucial concern of web users, lawmakers and consumer advocacy groups across the globe as companies like Google consolidate their positions of power and decide how they will use our personal information. The always-on-the-ball reporters over at The Onion News Network pick up on this concern with this breaking news report about Google’s new plan to build a remote commune for luddites who choose to “opt out.” These guys are getting really good at spoofing corporate speak and their understanding of the larger issues remains spot on. If you don’t want to give Google access to your most private thoughts and feelings, there is an option. Google will brand you with a Hester Prynne-style “G” and allow you to “toil in the hinderlands and die young.”
