ABC ordered eight more episodes of its reality series Shark Tank which begins production this fall and premieres in 2011. Shark Tank follows aspiring entrepreneurs as they pitch their business ideas in front of a panel consisting of five tough-minded multi-millionaires. In order to launch their new enterprise, the contestants must first try to persuade the panelists to invest their own money into the venture. During the upcoming season, comedian Jeff Foxworthy joins as a panelist for three episodes. The other five “sharks” are real estate guru Barbara Corcoran, “infomercial” industry leader Kevin Harrington, technology innovator Robert Herjavec, fashion legend Daymond John and financial expert Kevin O’Leary. Sony Pictures Television produces the series that is based on the Japanese series, Dragons’ Den with the format created by Nippon Television Network Corporation. Mark Burnett, Clay Newbill and Phil Gurin serve as executive producers.
Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Plus will jointly air the first three seasons of the Australian reality series, Football Superstar. The series premieres August 16 at 8p with new episodes airing each week on Mondays at 8p following Soccer Talk Live on Fox Soccer Channel. Each eight-episode season endeavors to find the next soccer star in an elimination-style competition. Fox Soccer Plus will additionally repeat episodes on Mondays at 10p and Fox Soccer Channel will air encore episodes at midnight on Mondays.
Petry Television, reported the national spot television advertising sales market is trending up by +48% and +54% for third quarter 2010. This third quarter is expected to finish at a higher level of growth than the previous first two quarters of this year. Petry Television’s projection of the local TV marketplace reflects advertising sales through the week ended August 6, 2010, comparing sales activity to the same date as last year. The Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB) said total spot TV ad sales (including national and local) for third quarter 2009 ended on a downturn at -28.1%, a figure including the top 100 TV markets.
Former Showtime network executive, Jay Larkin, 59, died after suffering a second bout of brain cancer. Mr. Larkin was with Showtime from 1984 through 2005 and was heavily involved in the launch of Showtime Championship Boxing in 1986 and was affectionately referred to as the “Boxing Czar” by the sports media. In his position at Showtime, Mr. Larkin led the network’s boxing coverage as both programmer and producer of live events encompassing sports, comedy, music and more for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Lisa and two sons, Ryan and Gabriel. There is a graveside funeral today at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY at 1130a. Debmar-Mercury is partnering with ITV STUDIOS and has acquired the domestic distribution rights to the series Hell’s Kitchen which airs on FOX and is scheduled to make its eighth season premiere September 22 at 8p. No dates have been announced yet as to when Debmar-Mercury will be taking the show out. This is the third deal cut between Debmar-Mercury and ITV STUDIOS as the two companies are developing a syndicated talk panel show, The Chefs and a new US first-run version of the UK daytime talk show, The Jeremy Kyle Show.
CMT approved its first scripted comedy, Working Class, giving the half-hour, family-themed project a 12-episode order. Starring Melissa Peterman, Working Class is about the life of a single blue-collar mom who moves her family to a wealthy suburban neighborhood all the while proudly clinging to her “working class” origins. Peterman is familiar to CMT viewers as the host of its series The Singing Bee and the recent special Melissa Peterman: Am I the Only One. The comedy is written and executive produced by Jill Cargerman (Spin City, Gary Unmarried) and will be produced internally.
A new reality project is being developed around Levi Johnston and his bid to become mayor of his hometown, Wasilla, Alaska. Stone and Co. is behind the project titled Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office and the company is currently in production on the pilot and has started pitching the concept to networks.
NBC picked up a 30m comedy script called Brave New World from executive producer Peter Tolan (FX’s Rescue Me). The comedy is produced by Sony TV and is about a re-creation of the pilgrims at a living museum.
Casting Call: Syfy is seeking a male host for a new television series titled Artifact Search Show. The ideal male candidate is 25-40 years old and is a real-life archaeologist, explorer, symbologist, world traveler, adventurer or world historian. Experts and enthusiasts are welcome to apply. Personality-wise the candidate should be funny, quirky, smart and likeable. The selected candidate must be able to travel internationally. Saturday A18-49 Analysis: FOX topped Saturday night with a 1.2/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, FOX’s back-to-back Cops episodes averaged a winning 1.2/5 followed by a three-way tie between ABC’s movie, CBS’ Crimetime Saturday repeat and UNIV’s Sabado Gigante at 0.6/3 apiece. FOX posted the same ratings during 9p at 1.2/5 for AMW: America Fights Back and CBS’ two-hour 48 Hours Mystery encore placed second at 0.9/3. Then at 10p, CBS’ continued 48 Hours Mystery rebroadcast won at 1.2/4 with UNIV’s weekly Sabado Gigante next at 1.0/4.

ABC began the night a winner with America’s Funniest Home Videos rerun at 1.6/6 and CBS’ 60 Minutes repeat and NBC’s sports special with John Madden tied for #2 at 1.3/5 each. NBC scored #1 the remainder of the night with the NFL Pre-Season Hall of Fame game between Cincinnati and Dallas with a 4.5/15 at 8p followed by CBS’ Big Brother at 2.5/8; at 9p NBC’s football game posted a 4.2/13 with FOX’s one-hour Family Guy rerun next at 2.1/6; and NBC finished the night with the last hour of the NFL Hall of Fame match at 3.9/12 while a tie occurred for second place between ABC’s The Gates and CBS’ encore of The Good Wife at 0.7/2 apiece.

During 9p, CBS’ repeat comedies Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory sparked a #1 at 2.7/8 followed by Soy Tu Duena at 2.3/7 and in a close third spot was the second half of ABC’s new Bachelor Pad at 2.3/6. McCann Midwest tapped Joe Garcia as President beginning August 16. Joe succeeds Garry Neel, who served a dual position heading McCann Midwest and supervising the General Motors business. Garry will now take on a dedicated role for General Motors overseeing the business worldwide and in the US as EVP/Global Account Director, McCann Worldgroup. Joe previously was in charge of BBDO’s Detroit operations and headed that agency’s Chrysler business.
David Friend was appointed SVP/News for the CBS Television Stations group. Since June 2006, David has been the VP/News Director at WCBS-TV in New York and will continue to manage the station’s news department. His new role, though, will give him added responsibility to work with the local management teams at CBS O&Os to oversee all news production and news operations. David’s new role will have him involved with communication and team building, creating newsgathering resources and sharing best practices with his team members across the group. David will additionally work with CBS Radio executives with the goal to develop and strengthen local news partnerships, and he will also be a liaison with members of the CBS News management team.
Peter Block joins the VOD service and website, FEARnet as President/GM as announced by its partners Sony Pictures Television, Lionsgate and Comcast. Diane Robina, the former President of FEARnet since its inception, will continue with the multi-platform horror, thriller and suspense destination into the fall until she departs to TV Guide Network as EVP/Programming, Production and Marketing.
JUMA Entertainment promoted Melissa Calheno to VP/Operations where she will head all in-house operations including new business development and growth goals for the company. Melissa will further manage integrated event development and media consulting. She continues to report to Robert Horowitz, President. Additionally, JUMA Entertainment hired Alaina Killoch as Manager/Development to offer series development and network programming analysis. Alaina joins from the Alternative Series and Specials Department at ABC. JUMA also added Dionne Clifton as Development Associate where she will work with the strategy and development of new series. Both Alaina and Dionne report jointly to Robert Horowitz and Lewis Fenton, Executive Producer and Head/Production.
Nat Fuchs takes on the new position as SVP/Group Director, Talent and Human Resources at SMG, effective immediately. Nat will be in charge of talent and human resources activities for MediaVest. He will further concentrate on Starcom MediaVest Group talent efforts in various worldwide markets. Based in New York, Nat reports to Bill Tucker, CEO, MediaVest for his MediaVest duties and to Bernard Bedon, EVP/Global Director of Human Resources and Talent Management in his encompassing SMG position.
