~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC seems to be getting into the horror genre by approving a script order for Frankenstein.  The project is a contemporary take on the legend of Frankenstein which originated in the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley.  Executive producers Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner of FOX’s House are writing Frankenstein for Universal Media Studios and BermanBraun.  Universal Studios holds the intellectual property rights to Frankenstein in addition to other classic horror characters as Dracula, the Wolfman and the Mummy.

ABC has a couple of new series projects in the pipeline:

  • A drama adaptation of the novel The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus from Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.  A script order is close.
  • The popular Lionsgate movie The Lincoln Lawyer based on the novel by Michael Connelly will also be adapted for the small screen written by John Romano and Connelly. Gary Luchessi of Lakeshore Entertainment is on board to produce through Lionsgate.

New unscripted series America’s Supernanny will have a home on Lifetime when the eight-episode one-hour series debuts later this year.  The network approved the new series based on the global format from Shed Media US featuring an American nanny who will rehabilitate kids and coach parents.  Lifetime and Shed Media also announced an open casting call in search of the country’s best nanny to star in the series.  The candidate must have a tough though loving philosophy about caring for children; be able to determine the roots of family problems; have the experience to coach parents and kids; hold a proof of US residence and be able to travel.  Prospective nannies can submit their information to be considered at: myLifetime.com .  Families with out of control kids can also be considered for the series by calling 877-NANNY-TIME (877-626-6984) or sending an email to: supernanny@shedmediaus.com for more information.

When the ninth edition of Top Chef premieres on Bravo this fall, the culinary competition show travels to the Lone Star state of Texas.  New judges joining the series for season nine include chef/restaurateur Emeril Lagasse and chef Hugh Acheson.  Top Chef: Texas also sees the return of host Padma Lakshmi and head judge chef Tom Colicchio as well as judge Gail Simmons. The Top Chef franchise is produced by Magical Elves.

Production has started on a new reality series for TLC titled Candy Queen (wt) set to roll out this winter.  TLC ordered six half-hour episodes from Half Yard Productions featuring Jackie Sorkin who operates a candy and events company based in Los Angeles called The Hollywood Candy Girls.

Former Scrubs star Sarah Chalke made a development/talent holding agreement with 20TH Century Fox Television.  The deal has the studio developing a comedy project starring Chalke slated for next fall.  If a new project does not get developed then the studio has in mind to cast Chalke in a project already in the works.

The Gurin Company inked a deal with entrepreneur and illustrator Todd Goldman to develop and produce four original television series.  The projects will include game shows and an unscripted series.  Goldman owns David & Goliath, a multi-million dollar merchandise company making clothing and posters featuring characters and slogans.

Casting Call: VPE: Vinnie Potestivo Entertainment is casting for Bravo’s new docu-series Newlyweds: The First Year (wt), capturing couples during their first year of marriage.  VPE is seeing engaged couples of all ages, sexes and nationalities who are to be married between September and November 2011.  Interested couples can send an email to: [email protected].

Casting Call:  A new feel-good television show is seeking outgoing, opinionated and outrageous small business owners who also employ fun staffers.  The show’s premise will revive businesses with a makeover conducted by a successful business expert.  Examples of businesses include: bakeries, bike shops, karate studios, jewelry stores, candy shops, flower shops, clothing stores among other family businesses.  The producers, however, are not looking for restaurants, bars, hair salons or major chains.  Brick and mortar only.  Please send in your info or nominate a small business you know.
