CBS made contract extension deals with David Letterman and Craig Ferguson to continue as hosts for their respective late night shows, Late Show and The Late Late Show through 2014.  Worldwide Pants, Inc. produces both series.  With this new agreement, Letterman who began in late night in 1982, will become the longest-running late night talk show host in television history, going past Johnny Carson’s 30-year record.  Additionally, the deal allows The Late Late Show to move to a larger stage at CBS Television City in Los Angeles and CBS will co-produce the series with Worldwide Pants, Inc.

The 66th Annual Tony Awards will have Neil Patrick Harris returning as host of the awards show broadcasting live from The Beacon Theater in New York June 10 at 8p on CBS.  This marks Harris’ third time as host of the Tony Awards.  Harris will also act as a producer along with executive producers Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss of White Cherry Entertainment.

New eight-part one-hour series The Great American Manhunt launches on National Geographic Channel April 19 at 9p.  The series follows a team of forensic detectives and scientists as they use current techniques and technology in forensic science to reveal a living mystery target person without using national databases and only forensic tests to identify human traits. Wide-Eyed Entertainment is producing. 

A Windy City version of The Style Network’s Jerseylicious franchise will launch this summer as Chicagolicious on June 3 at 9p.  In the new 10-episode version, viewers will meet Al Johnson who owns the glamour and beauty shop AJ’s of Chicago who has a celebrity clientele including Jennifer Hudson, Angela Bassett and Iman.  Chicagolicious will premiere following the fourth premiere of Jerseylicious on June 3.  Endemol USA is producing Chicagolicious. 

A second season was approved of Hillbilly Handfishin’ on Animal Planet and the network is moving forward with another fish-related show Fish America (wt).  Animal Planet will have seven one-hour episodes of Hillbilly Handfishin’ as well as a summer three-part companion miniseries, Hillbilly Handfishin’: World Series (wt) where the stars of the series Skipper and Jackson travel cross-country to find the top handfishers in America.  Hillbilly Handfishin’ is produced by Half Yard Productions for Animal Planet.  In Fish America (wt) outdoorsman and pro wrestler Showtime Eric Young travels the country to locate creative, unusual and dangerous fishing rituals.  Fish America (wt) is produced by part2 pictures for Animal Planet. 

Military Channel brings back a third season of Great Planes beginning April 25 at 10p. Hosted by Terry Deitz, the 10-episode third season opens with a look at the B-29 Superfortress followed by the C-130 Hercules in the May 2 episode and the AV-8 Harrier during the May 9 episode.  Great Planes is produced by M2 Pictures. 

The season two premiere of Game of Thrones on HBO posted series high ratings on Sunday with 3.9 million total viewers, up +74% from its first season debut last year.  Combining all three Sunday airings, Game of Thrones brought in 6.3 million total viewers for the night. 

Last Sunday, Animal Planet debuted season four of River Monsters which tallied 1.8 million total viewers as well as 976,000 among A25-54.  River Monsters is produced by Icon Films for Animal Planet and it airs on Sundays at 10p.


~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~


MIPTV 2012:

ALL3MEDIA International secured new deals for the 14th season of Midsomer Murders to air in Czech Republic, Croatia, Canada, Lithuania, Australia, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, Netherlands and Africa.  Seasons 13and 14 will also air in French-speaking Canada.  Production on season 15 with six new episodes begins this summer in England. 

European-based audiovisual production company De Angelis Group has made licensing deals for the miniseries Titanic: Blood and Steel with 12 one-hour episodes.  Deals made for the miniseries include Telenet and VMMA in Belgium; Fox in Bulgaria; DR in Denmark; Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Macedonia with Visionary; Iceland’s Screen One; and in Pan Asia with AETN; Pro.TV in Romania; and TV JOJ in Slovakia. 

Factual distributor Electric Sky made several deals in Asia this month using its new Hong Kong office.  Japan’s NHK picked up the cooking series Glamour Puds Series 2 and the 150-minute Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  Highlights of other documentary and limited series sales include: Britain’s Youngest Undertaker to Tokyo Vision in Japan; Nippon TV in Japan also acquired the two-part series World’s Fattest Man; Japan’s TFC and Phoenix TV in Hong Kong picked up the docu-drama Waking the Titanic; and Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific acquired several titles including the documentary Game Changer: London 2012; the cooking series My Cypriot Kitchen; and the docu-series Beautiful Minds

UK’s Channel 5 inked a new two-year agreement with Initial, an Endemol company for the exclusive rights to air Big Brother through 2014. 

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) made additional international TV sales for Bellator Fighting Championship.  The mixed martial arts brand has been sold in multi-year TV rights to CANAL+ in Poland and Celestial Tiger Entertainment, for syndication to 13 countries across Southeast Asia as well as Esporte Interativo in Brazil. 

Globo TV International presented the five episode half-hour comedy series The Invisible Woman at MIPTV. 

ITV Studios Global Entertainment made a slew of international sales for several crime dramas.  The new series Endeavour and the second season of Vera have been picked up by Australia’s Seven Network, TVNZ in New Zealand and Belgian public broadcaster VRT. The Netherlands Public Broadcasting (NPO) picked up just Endeavour.  Above Suspicion: Silent Scream was acquired by Estonia’s ETV, TVNZ and VRT.  The third season of Deadly Intent was picked up by VRT and BBC Entertainment in Africa.  The fifth season of Murdoch Mysteries was sold to Thailand’s True Visions and it will also air on Italy’s RAI.  NBCU Global Network Asia and China’s Beijing Sohu picked up seasons three and four of Murdoch Mysteries while VRT picked up season four.  The 13th season of Agatha Christie’s Poirot was sold to Hungary’s Sanomaa for broadcast by Story TV before its UK premiere and season 12 was picked up by Singapore’s MediaCorp and Bejing Sohu.  Furthermore, season six of Agatha Christie’s Marple was sold to Sanoma for Story TV and China’s Gcoo Entertainment also before its UK debut.  A package containing both Agatha Christie drama versions was selected up by Japan’s NEP for NHK, Channel Ginga and AXN Mystery.  The sixth season of Lewis was acquired by NPO along with Seven Network (Australia) and VRT; China’s DB Star has gained seasons third and fourth seasons.  

NBCUniversal’s dating format Average Joe was sold to France’s TV channel M6.  The program originally debuted on NBC in 2003 and this is the first time the format has been picked up internationally.  M6 will air eight eps in primetime.

SevenOne International secured the distribution rights for the celebrity game show Duo and the variety show In Lieu of Flowers.  Both series are created by Canadian production company Zone 3. 

Creator, producer and distributor Shaftesbury sold the food/adventure series From Spain With Love with 13 half-hour eps to XYZnetworks’ LifeStyle FOOD channel in Australia; New Zealand’s Food Television; Asian Food Channel in Southeast Asia; and Fox Traveller India.  The series is now licensed in 100 countries worldwide.  The series is produced by Shaftesbury in association with Henry Less Productions.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Production on a third season of Syfy’s Haven begins April 18 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  The third season will have 13 new episodes and the plot will pick up immediately following events from the season two finale.  Haven is produced by Entertainment One and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd. 

Director/actor Robert Redford and producing partner Laura Michalchyshyn have established Sundance Productions, a new production company concentrating on television and multi-media content.  The new entity will focus on creating, developing and producing fiction and non-fiction programming to be distributed via broadcast and cable TV, digital platforms and channels.  One of the original programs Sundance Productions has on the docket is the documentary All The President’s Men Revisited.  The two-hour documentary special was commissioned by Discovery Channel worldwide.  Redford would narrate and serve as EP along with Andy Lack and Michalchyshyn.  A January 2013 premiere is planned.

The Amazing Race co-creator Bertram van Munster is creating an untitled reality show for Spike TV featuring the world of Bellator Fighting Championships.  Many details on the one-hour series are not being revealed though it will highlight fighters from the mixed martial arts league.  Van Munster and his Profiles Television Productions co-founder Elise Doganiere will be EPs on the project along with Spike TV’s EVP/Original Programming Sharon Levy and SVP/Original Programming Tim Duffy, who will manage the series for the network.  Next year, Spike TV will get the actual Bellator fights that are currently airing on MTV2and Epix through the preliminary rounds are on Spike.com.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS swished in a win Saturday delivering a 5.3/17 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  During the 8p hour, CBS was #1 with the NCAA Basketball Bridge at 4.5/16 and double Cops episodes on FOX followed at an average of 1.2/4.  CBS’ NCAA Basketball Championship game between Ohio State and Kansas won by a landslide at 5.3/17 and trailing at #2 was ABC’s My Extreme Affliction and Telemundo’s Futbol match tied at 0.8/3 each.  CBS dribbled past the competition at 10p with more NCAA Basketball Championship coverage at 5.4/16 and ABC’s My Extreme Affliction was a solo second placer taker at 1.0/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  No fooling around for CBS as the network won Sunday with a 2.7/7 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 7p, CBS did best with 60 Minutes at 1.4/4 while an encore edition of America’s Funniest Home Videos on ABC was not far behind at 1.2/4.  ABC’s Once Upon a Time beat out the competition at 8p with a 2.8/8 and CBS’ ACM Awards coverage was a tenth of a rating point off at 2.7/8 to come in second.  CBS’ ACM Awards saw its ratings increase during 9p to a 3.2/8 and ABC’s Desperate Housewives followed at 2.6/6.  CBS capped off the night with a final win with the ACM Awards at 3.4/9 and NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice slid into second place at 2.1/6.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS had a big finish to “March Madness” Monday winning with a 5.7/15 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  NBC’s The Voice was a hit at 8p at 4.0/12 while ABC’s Dancing with the Stars waltzed into second place at 2.7/8 and the return of Bones on FOX posted a 2.5/7 in third place.  The final game of the NCAA Basketball Championship on CBS was first at 9p with a 7.2/18 and the second half of The Voice on NBC was #2 at 4.3/11.  Then at 10p, the NCAA Basketball Championship finish with Kentucky beating Kansas was #1 at 7.9/20 and ABC’s Castle and NBC’s Smash tied for #2 at 2.1/5 apiece.
