Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment and Corus Entertainment Inc.’s Nelvana Enterprises have come together to create KidsCo, a new kid/family centric multi-platform TV channel that will be available around the world.  The KidsCo joint venture is designed to offer a “responsible and entertainment environment,” for kids (little ones through teens) and family viewers around the world, with a 24/7 broadcast plan, which will be comprised of different day parts programmed to specific demos.  KidsCo will begin rolling out this fall 2007 in Central and Eastern Europe, to be followed with debuts throughout 2008-9 in upwards of 40 territories across Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific.  With a plan in place to localize the channel from market-to-market, programming on KidsCo will include a mix of live-action and animated TV series and feature films, from the DIC and Nelvana libraries, as well as acquire programs and produce new original content for the channel.


DreamWorks Animation acquires Master Mind, a superhero spoof from writers Alan Schoolcraft & Brent Simons.  The movie will be developed and produced with Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld’s Rush Hour Films in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation.  DreamWorks veterans and first time co-directors Cameron Hood and Kyle Jefferson will helm the project, with Schoolcraft and Simons continuing as writers.  The comedy follows a super villain who loses his zest for life after inadvertently killing is nemesis, Uberman.  Who says everyone couldn’t use some therapy?  While the movie may not be specifically be targeted to kids the older ones along with tweens and teens will be there.


Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will be showcased this month on Starz, leading up to the Columbia Pictures release of the live-action Spider-Man 3 movie on May 4, 2007.  Starz viewers will be able to catch sneak-peeks of the upcoming movie, including the premiere of On the Set: Spider-Man 3, a special featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, on Saturday, April 28 from 10:55p.  On Thursday, May 3, Starz will host When Comic Books Attack, a day-long marathon of movies based on comic books including Sin City, Underworld: Evolution, Silver Hawk, Blade, Judge Dredd, Dick Tracy, Darkman, and Batman and Robin.  Additionally, beginning today and running through May 4, 2007, folks can enter the Starz Spider-Man 3 Sweepstakes.  Following its debut on Starz, the On the Set: Spider-Man 3 special will run on all of the Starz thematic channels.

Gather round and hear how it came to pass that one time best friends became the worst of enemies when Nickelodeon hosts a SpongeBob SquarePants marathon on Friday, April 13, 2007 5-10p.  The five-hour marathon will feature an interactive live-action contest and the premiere of a new episode titled, Friend or Foe at 8p, hosted by Patchy the Pirate.  Friend or Foe gets to the bottom of where and how the long-time rivalry between Mr. Krabs and Plankton was born.  The Friend or Foe-Down contest includes two teams of real kids going through a series of challenges on Friday, April 13 from 5-8:30p.  The event, taped on-site at the Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn, will air during a special edition of Nickelodeon’s ME:TV, the new convergent live daypart.

Vancouver’s Thunderbird Films has completed the live-action production on a third season of Zixx, the mixed CG animation and live-action series.  The new season will bow on YTV as Zixx: Level Three in Summer 2008.  Zixx revolves around of Zixx Phunkee Zee as she tries to save the universe from evil aliens with the help of her team of human teens.  Zixx has been sold to Cartoon Network in the US and the UK, and is being distributed internationally by Rainmaker Animation and Echo Bridge Entertainment.  Zixx is produced by Thunderbird Films in association with YTV Canada and Rainmaker Animation, as well as with the support of the Shaw Rocket Fund and the Independent Production Fund.

Entara Ltd. has completed a new TV distribution agreement with Taffy Entertainment, for its 3D animated series, Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks.  Entara and its recently launched in-house distribution division, will work with Taffy Entertainment on the development and production of new episodes of Jakers as well as a feature film based on the property.  Produced by Mike Young Productions (MYP) for Entara, Jakers! has already been sold to broadcasters around the world by Taffy Entertainment.  Taffy is the worldwide distribution and consumer products brand management company for MYP, Moonscoop, and select third-party producers.

Jetix Europe has acquired the second season of the cartoon comedy Captain Flamingo.  Season two is comprised of 52×11′ or 26×30′, bringing the series episode total to 104×11′ or 52×30′ episodes.  Jetix Europe holds the European and Middle Eastern Pay TV (except in France), TV distribution (with the exception of Spain and Portugal), home video and consumer product rights to the series.  Buena Vista International Television handles the TV distribution for the property on behalf of Jetix Europe.  Captain Flamingo is co-produced by Breakthrough Entertainment, Heroic Film Company, Atomic Cartoons and Philippine Animators Group.

Turkey’s Digiturk has signed a multiyear agreement with Disney Channel to offer the network to subscribers as of April 29.  The lineup, airing from 6a-10p, will include localized dubbed programming, promotions, and interstitials. Giorgio Stock, Disney Channel Italy’s SVP and MD, will oversee the new channel.  Some of the programming to air in Turkey will be That’s So Raven, Hannah Montana, High School Musical, and many others.

4kids Entertainment will offer its animated action/adventure/comedy series TMNT – Fast Forward (26×30′) to international buyers at MIPTV.  Recently inked deals will see the show running in Asia on Cartoon Network (India), Indosiar (Indonesia), ABS-CBN (Philippines), Momo TV (Taiwan) and MediaCorp TV12’s Kids Central (Singapore).  Other recent licensees for the series also include SIC (Portugal), Ten Network (Australia), Cartoon Network (Australia & NZ), DR TV (Denmark), UCOI (Israel), Selecta Vision for Spain home video and Contender Entertainment for the UK among others.

In other Jetix Europe news, its Jetix Consumer Products (JCP) has teamed with retail partner Digital Stores to launch the first Sonic X online store.  Scheduled to debut June 2007, the online store ( ) will feature a range of Sonic X merchandise including collectible figures from Spinmaster, apparel, stationery and mobile accessory items, with new items slated to be added as and they are released.  Pricing on the Sonic X site will appear in both euros and pounds.  The launch of the site will be supported by ads on Jetix Europe’s channels and promotion in the six Jetix magazines across Europe.  Links from Jetix Europe’s consumer websites will also help to drive traffic to the store.  JCP has worldwide merchandising and home video rights for Sonic X excluding Asia and North America.

Little Maestros Media and Rhino Entertainment have inked a new multi-album deal. The albums will be released via a joint Little Maestros/Kid Rhino label, with the first titles, Welcome Home To Maestroville and Word Is On The Playground, slated to drop later this year.  Little Maestros is a preschool music program designed to entertain and educate through a range of live music.  Little Maestros Media is an affiliate of Kidville, while Rhino Entertainment and its Kid Rhino label are part of Warner Music Group Corp.

Following its April 13, premiere on Nickelodeon, The new SpongeBob SquarePants: Friend or Foe? episode will be released on DVD on April 17.  Added extras on the release include the original uncut animatic for Friend or Foe? and special Plankton and Mr. Krabs photo gallery.


Chorion, the property rights owner of kid’s brands, has shuffled its consumer and trade public relations roster in the UK.  Moving forward Four Communications will handle Chorion’s Mr. Men and Little Miss account, while Four’s existing Noddy account will now be run by Lucre.  Portland continues to handle Chorion’s corporate and financial accounts.
