CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

04/28/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 28, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

American Idol is certainly taking its punches this week with the most recent voting off of popular African American singer Jennifer Hudson.  Hudson has appeared on numerous celebrity chats, and entertainment news mags, been interviewed everywhere, following her rejection from the show. Considered to be one of the front runners, her ejection came as quite a surprise to many.  Even Sir Elton John who says “The three people I was really impressed with, and they just happened to be black, young female singers, and they all seem to be landing in the bottom three … The fact that they’re constantly in the bottom three — and I don’t want to set myself up here — but I find it incredibly racist.”  Star Jones on ABC’s The View, a long standing fan of A.I., says she’s no longer interested in watching as she doesn’t want to watch a ‘popularity contest.’  There was talk the voting was skewed as a result of an area outside of Chicago being knocked out of the voting due to a violent twister in the area that evening (Hudson is from the Chicago area).  Another school of thought was since Hudson and the other two African American female singers received the least amount of votes last week, that splitting these three’s fan base caused the ‘irregularity’ in voting.  Whatever the cause (or non-cause), it certainly has become fodder for the water cooler, and after all, that isn’t that the idea?

Friday night’s ABC News Nightline will be fully dedicated to those who were killed in action while fighting in Iraq.  Ted Koppel will read each of the 500+ names, while their photographs and military information (age, rank, military branch) are shown on the screen.  The show will also be simulcast on the jumbotron in Times Square.

The Antiques Roadshow is heading north.  Well, no, not really.  In fact, Canada is creating their own – the Canadian Antiques Roadshow is expected to make its network debut on CBS during the upcoming season. 13 one hour eps have been ordered, and have been scheduled beginning in Saint John N.B. on May 5 and ending in Vancouver at the end of the month. Set to host Valerie Pringle (Canada AM, Midday).

WWE and Spike TV are combining forces to air The WWE Experience on Sunday mornings.  The show will premiere on May 2, 10a.  The 1 hour show will be a follow-up to the Monday Night RAW and WWE SmackDown (UPN) with a weekly story and synopsis of the action.  This is the first move in a collaboration between WWE and Spike to attract younger viewers to wrestling.  They also announced WWE Velocity move from 10p. to 7p on Saturdays beginning May 1st.  WWE Confidential is ending its run with the last show on Spike on April 24th.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the Reverend Al Sharpton is currently in negotiations with CNBC to host a series of primetime specials that could ultimately land him a regular gig.  And apparently CNBC isn’t the only suitor interested – also courting the candidate turned William Morris Agency client is radio shops Westwood One and Premiere Radio Networks.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:    California registered landmark #367, The Queen Anne Cottage, formerly owned and partially built by Elias “Lucky” Jackson Baldwin.  This Victorian styled house and its 127-acre tropical jungle style setting has been used through the decades as a favorite Hollywood backdrop – Tarzan swung through the arboretum, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby  traveled on the Road to Singapore through the grounds; and James Earl Jones in search of Kunte traveled its waterways.  Less historic, but significant nonetheless, this tropical setting house was also the main office/house on what mystical/magical primetime drama series?  Mr. Roark’s house/office on FANTASY ISLAND.  Kudos to everybody and their brother.  Holy cow! Who knew you all knew??
