Summer premiere dates revealed for one returning series and two new shows on CBS: A new 14th edition of Big Brother resumes its three-night-a-week schedule beginning July 12 at 9p. Additional weekly air dates include Sundays and Wednesdays at 8p. New dating series 3 opens with a special 90-minute episode on July 22 right after the Sunday airing of Big Brother. CBS also slated new unscripted series, Dogs in the City to bow May 30 at 8p. Big Brother is from Fly on the Wall Entertainment in association with Endemol USA. 3 is co-produced by Magical Elves, 1492 Television and Keshet Broadcasting. Dogs in the City is from CBS’ Raquel Productions in association with Shed Media and Carol Mendelsohn Productions.
Premium cable network HBO picked up two more seasons of Real Time with Bill Maher. The three-year agreement keep’s Maher on the network through 2014.
Beginning this Thursday, Discovery Fit & Health debuts the six-part UK series Embarrassing Bodies at 10p. The series documents real people who have humiliating medical conditions such as extreme body hair to rotting teeth.
A new Discovery Channel series examines the world of gangs and crime families who have reached prominence when Kurt Sutter’s Outlaw Empires launches May 14 at 10p. Each of the six episodes relates the full story of a well-known American outlaw dynasty. Studio Lambert and Sutterink produce the series for Discovery Channel.
ABC Family renewed The Lying Game for a second season. The drama series is based on a young adult book series of the same name by Sara Shepard. Production will begin later this summer and The Lying Game will premiere in the winter.
E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians gained three additional seasons and will be on the air through season nine, reports THR. The new deal includes all members of the Kardashian family and furthermore, this deal extends E!’s first look rights for all of the family’s non-scripted ideas, concepts and projects. Production is underway on the next season by Ryan Seacrest Productions and the seventh season debuts May 20 at 9p.
At its Upfront event, Syfy unveiled its next phase of original programming including a slew of scripted and unscripted projects. Syfy has one scripted series:
- Defiance is a project in collaboration with Trion Worlds and its multi-platform shooter MMO which will premiere at the same time as the linear series. The plot is set in the near future where planet Earth has been completely transformed and is inhabited by survivors of a universal war. Debuts in 2013 from Universal Cable Productions.
Syfy offers up a half-dozen new reality series:
- School Spirits tells of true ghost stories set at schools around the country. Premieres June 2012.
- Paranormal Highway follows Jack Osbourne and Dana Workman as they investigate paranormal activity located on America’s remote back roads. From BASE Productions.
- Collection Intervention centers on collectibles expert Elyse Luray as she helps couples decide what to do with an overwhelming collection of memorabilia. High Noon Entertainment is producing.
- Hot Set is from the producers of Face Off and is an extreme design challenge pitting two Hollywood production designers in a head-to-head battle each week. Mission Control Media is behind the project.
- Viral Video Countdown watches as two teams of viral video creators battle each week to create a video fitting for that week’s theme. The winning team gets the bragging rights and a cash prize. 495 Productions is producing.
- Ghost Mine takes viewers to the remote woods of Oregon to one of the richest gold mines in the US. The mine will be re-opened by a group of miners who must battle the ghostly spirits that also are located in the mine. From 51 Minds.
Syfy has eight scripted projects in development:
- Rewind is about a team of military field operatives and civilian scientists who must travel back in time, using untested technology, to avoid a horrible terrorist attack. Produced by BermanBraun and Universal Cable Productions.
- The Adjustment Bureau is based on the movie starring Matt Damon about guardian angel-type agents who work to keep the world according to The Plan. From Universal Cable Productions.
- High Moon is based on the novel, The Lotus Caves by John Christopher and depicts a world where different countries of Earth have established colonies on the moon. Universal Cable Productions is producing.
- Untitled Booster Gold Project is based on the popular DC Entertainment Comic and is about a washed-up athlete from the future who travels back in time in hopes of becoming the world’s greatest superhero. DC Entertainment is producing.
- Grave Sight follows Harper Connelly, who as a young woman, was struck by lightning as a teenage and now she can sense the location and last memories of dead people. She teams up with her stepbrother, Tolliver Lang to help find a missing girl. Produced by Universal Cable Productions.
- Seeing Things is based on the comic Grey Legion centered on a cop who comes back as a ghost to close his final case. From Universal Cable Productions.
- Defender relates the aftermath of an intergalactic war between humans and transhumans. Universal Cable Productions is producing.
- The Family is about an alien family who has lived amongst humans in plain sight and has carved out a life for themselves as their family expanded. Sony Pictures TV is behind the project.
Syfy additionally has 17 reality projects in development:
- The Genie follows Steve Sims and his extreme concierge company, Blue Fish. From Smart Dog Media.
- Stranded follows a group of family members or friends through a terrifying paranormal social experiment. Ping Pong Productions is producing.
- Awesome Foundation stars Josh Gates and each week inventors, artists and ordinary people pitch their ideas to the Awesome Foundation. Idiot Box Productions is producing.
- Exit is based on a popular Japanese game show format where two teams battle to escape three terrifying rooms. Zig Zag Productions is producing.
- Buyer Beware features real estate pros who specialize in selling haunted houses. From Zodiak USA.
- Untitled Mark Burnett Project (wt) is a competition show where fans of sci-fi/fantasy books and movies compete to create dishes inspired from the foods featured in the imaginary worlds they love. From Mark Burnett Productions.
- Deadfinder follows a group of mediums as they investigate cold cases to discover the identity of Jane or John Does. From NorthSouth.
- Ghost Town, USA revolves around Mount Holly, NJ, a town full of paranormal activity. Cream Productions is producing.
- The Wrights highlights the relatives of the famous Wright Brothers, Joe and Chris Wright who talk to the dead instead of building airplanes. Jarrett Creative Group is behind this project.
- Chris Cox Project features mind reader Chris Cox who really can’t read minds but amazes people every day. From Mission Control Media.
- Divas of Dress-Up is about six cos-play stars as they transform themselves into fictional characters that push the envelope on fantasy and reality. From Skip Films.
- Fan Girl/Fan Boy Project is a docu-series exploring the fan girl and fan boy cultures. 495 Productions is producing.
- Limitless relates true-life stories of ordinary men and women who discovered they have hidden powers. Karga 7 is producing.
- Superhumans reveals the secrets of amazing stunts by using real people doing the challenges and tests which answers the question: How did they do that? From BASE Productions.
- Toy Traveler follows Shane Turgeon who is regarded as the Indiana Jones of toy collectors. Jarrett Creative Group is producing.
- Master Control is a weekly competition that pits user-generated videos against each other to see which one is more popular with the viewers. The Gurin Co. is producing.
- Stranger Than Fiction is a viral clip show where comedians compete for laughs while commenting on and debating the oddest clips from the web. Produced by BASE Productions.
Syfy has three long-form projects in the hopper: Eyes of the Dragon from Universal Cable Productions and Ostar Productions; Darkfall produced by The Jim Henson Company and Universal Cable Productions; and One Mile Straight Down from Universal Cable Productions.
UPFRONT 2012: nuvoTV
English-language cable network, nuvoTV, targeting Bi-cultural Latinos 18-49, hosted its Upfront event in New York last night. The network presented five new original non-scripted series for its 2012-2013 season:
- Mario Lopez 1-on-1 stars Mario Lopez as he talks one-on-one with the top Latino celebrities in the entertainment world.
- Fight Factory has nine one-hour episodes and this reality series offers a look at the growing sport of MMA and top Latino MMA fighters. Produced by nuvoTV and Original Media.
- The 7 of Clubs is a reality series that visits the top clubs and events while exploring the global party scene. DJ Dirty Draws (aka Latino mix artist Jesus Cortez) hosts the series.
- Curvy Girls has seven half-hour episodes centered on a group of attractive plus-sized models who strive to make it to the top in their industry. Produced by nuvoTV and Stage 3 Productions.
- Low-Ballers focuses on the high-dollar auto industry by following Exotic Motors as they look for cheap, beat-up cars to makeover and then sell. Produced by nuvoTV and Baby Jake Media.
nuvoTV is also returning its half-hour competition reality series Model Latina for a sixth edition.
Drama series Major Crimes for TNT has begun production in Los Angeles. Starring Mary McDonnell, the series continues her role from The Closer and premieres on August 13 at 10p following The Closer’s series finale. Major Crimes will then move to its regular timeslot of Mondays at 9p. TNT ordered 10 episodes for season one, which is being produced by The Shephard/Robin Company in association with Warner Bros. Television.
Producer and host, Ryan Seacrest inked a new deal with FOX to remain with the network for two more years. Seacrest is currently the host on American Idol.
Former Rome actor Ray Stevenson landed a major recurring role on Showtime’s Dexter, per THR. Stevenson will play a top-ranking member of the Eastern European crime ring that comes to Miami to find out who killed one of his associates. Season seven of Dexter opens September 30.

ABC’s Shark Tank and FOX’s America’s Most Wanted special each delivered a 0.8/3 during 8p with Univision’s Sabado Gigante a close third place at 0.7/3. A three-way tie occurred for #1 at 9p between ABC’s 20/20, FOX’s America’s Most Wanted and Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3 each and CBS’ Crimetime Saturday came next at 0.6/2. The Voice on NBC continued to dominate through 9p at 4.2/10 and ABC kept its beat with Dancing with the Stars at 3.4/8.
