CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/20/05

Good morning.  It’s Wednesday, April 20, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC‘s daily morning show Today Executive Producer, after 2-1/2 years at the helm, Tom Touchet has been released of his Today show duties, but is expected to stay with the network. Stepping up to the plate will be Phil Griffin as VP/Exec-in-Charge, and Jim Bell as Exec Prod. Griffin moves over from VP/Primetime Programming with MSNBC, and Bell is an NBC Sports producer, per Variety.

At the center of the concern for NBC is ABC’s Good Morning America’s steady creeping up on Today’s heels.  Sort of like the Mummy in the old horror films – it may be slow, but it just keeps coming. While Today is more than a half million viewers in front of GMA on average this season, during the week of April 4 that cushion had been reduced to just 350,000 total viewers, the smallest gap between the two dueling shows since February 7, 2005. Among A25-54 that week, GMA was behind by a mere 210,000 viewers, the smallest separation since April, 1996.  There have also been a handful of days when GMA has beaten Today in total viewers.  Two most recent times when GMA has topped Today were the Monday after the death of Pope John Paul II, wtih GMA pulling in 5.61m viewers over Today’s 5.49m; and among A25-54, GMA 2.91m vs. Today 2.81m. The other was on Tuesday, April 12, with GMA’s 5.299m vs. Today 5.244m ; A25-54 GMA 2.578m vs. 2.554m.

Fox News Channel and Sprint have gotten together, providing FNC live content via cellphones to Sprint subscribers, anywhere in the US.  All FNC programming, including commercials and promos, will be available live and free to wireless customers who are using Sprint’s Vision Multimedia cellphones and are signed up with Sprint’s Nationwide PCS Network, in addition to their regular PCS Vision plan.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Exec Prod Edward Allen Bernero (Third Watch) has signed a 2-year development deal with Paramount Network Television, for a reported seven figure bottom line, according to Hollywood Reporter.  Bernero will develop new series as well as potentially participate in current series and/or projects.

Over at NBC Universal Television Studio, exec prod Matt Kunitz (Fear Factor) has also signed a 2-year, a seven figure development deal, per Variety.  His charge will be alternative programming, and all the while maintain his top position with Fear Factor (Endemol USA).

* CASTING UPDATES *

 CBS:

  • The Unit (20th) has signed Max Martini to join Amy Acker, Scott Foley, Dennis Haysbert, Michael Blaine, Michael Irby, Regina King, Robert Patrick and Regina Taylor, in this drama project about an elite Special Forces unit.

FOX:

  • Kitchen Confidential (20th/New Line Television/Darren Star Prods) has added Sam Pancake, in the role of a restaurant waiter. The show focuses on the restaurant’s head chef, a noted industry ‘bad boy’ who is attempting to not fall back on previous behaviors. THe show stars Bradley Cooper as our chef, with support from Nicholas Brendon, John Francis Daley, Jaime King, Bonnie Somerville and Owain Yeoman.
  • Queen B (20th/Imagine TV) has cast Scott Holroyd to the cast led by Alicia Silverstone; Holroyd will play a love interest to Silverstone’s character. The story focuses on Bea, a woman who’s beguiling ways got her whatever she wanted in high school; apparently it doesn’t work as well in the post-high school world.

ABC Family:

  • Untitled Venus & Serena Williams Project has a new title – Venus & Serena: For Real.  The show debuts in July and is a reality series with cameras following the day to day lives of these two tennis greats, on and off the court.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

The History Channel special FDR: A Presidency Revealed aired on Sunday night with a viewing audience of 3 million total viewers, and scoring a 2.6 HH rating from 9-11p, making it the highest rated program airing on the network thus far this year.

Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution has signed an 18 picture deal with the Speed Channel, including titles such as The Great Race, The Getaway, Pink Cadillac, Bullitt, Any Which Way You Can, Black Moon Rising, The Betsy, A Man and a Woman, and City Heat.  Speed plans to resurrect its hosted movie franchise, Lost Drive-In in 4th qtr this year; no new host has been named, per Variety.

Good Housekeeping and Litton Entertainment will partner on the future production and distribution of the syndicated news service Good Housekeeping Reports.  The 90-second segments are currently available in 120 markets, and are provided with a split track, complete scripts and an expanded supporting B-Roll.  Good Housekeeping and Litton offer 12 new reports monthly.

The Family Entertainment and Copyright Act of 2005 was passed yesterday by the US House of Representatives, and having been passed by the Senate earlier this year, the bill now only needs President Bush’s signature to make it a law.  The bill makes recording a movie inside of a theatre and the posting of movies or songs on peer-to-peer file sharing networks a federal crime, which for a first offense could result in a sentence of up to 5 yrs in prison as well as a $250,000 fine.  The bill also affirms the right for companies to legally sell videos and audio titles that includes a filtering technology allowing the user strip violent or s#xually explicit scenes and language.  However, manufacturers of that technology will be required to note at the top of the title/product that by using the filtering device, the product will have been altered from what the director and copyright holder had intended.  Whether we agree or not with the issues above, the act also puts back into effect the Film Preservation Act which aims to protect, restore and maintain important films from deterioration and various forms of damage.

Answer to yesterday’s Trivia Question: What is the proper and scripted response to this statement and who said it:  “I take a little seed, I put it in the ground, I put dirt over it, I water it, and then do you know what I get?”  Oliver Wendell Douglas from Green Acres asked the question; his wife Lisa answered with, “a dirty, little, wet seed?”  Kudos to: Shannon Flynn-Plus Media/NY; Alessandra Magistrali Smith-WETA Corp. Today’s Trivia Question:
  In 1965, LOOK Magazine suggested these rules for viewing a very popular primetime drama:  1) You need to watch every episode; 2)  If you suspect anything, you’re wrong;  3) If a villain appears, he’s probably not one.  What was the show?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
