Cynopsis: DIGITAL
04/01/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 1, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

April Fools Day arrives with fear of the latest superworm, dubbed Conflicker or alternatively Downup or Kido. The worm, which is believed to have burrowed its way into more than 3 million Windows-based PCs in the U.S. and another 10 million internationally, is expected to manifest itself in some way today, possibly causing massive network outtages. Microsoft has been concerned enough about the malware to organize a task force to combat the effects of Conflicker and offer a $250,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the hackers who cooked it up. Computer experts say the best way to combat the worm is to perform a clean install …

A company that has devoted much energy to philanthropic investments in the past, Google unveiled a new $100 million venture capital group called Google Ventures looking to seed promising technology companies that may actually turn a profit. “We’ll be focusing on early stage investments across a diverse range of industries, including consumer internet, software, clean-tech, bio-tech, health care and, no doubt, other areas we haven’t thought of yet,” writes Rich Miner, a co-founder of mobile OS Android, and Bill Maris in a blog post, the two Google executives who will be managing the fund. Google Ventures has already made two investments: Silver Spring Networks, a company dedicated to improving the efficiencies of electric grids; and Pixazza, an online ad firm staffed by Netscape veterans that allows web publishers to tag photos with point-of-purchase info.

Traditional network shows have been building fan bases on social networking sites with tools from companies like Watercooler for some time now. It’s about time for web producers to get into the act. Producer of such shows as Diggnation and Tekzilla, Revision3 is launching a new viral Facebook app powered by iWidgets to allow fans share clips of their favorite Revision3 shows. Multiplatform video streaming and transcoding specialist RipCode is launching a new dynamic, real-time ad insertion platform today, dubbed TransAct Monetizer, to enable seamless insertion of pre-roll, post-roll or overlay ads into video on the fly via mobile, desktop or IPTV. The ability to instantly serve video ads based on user profiles rather than stitching generic ads onto video beforehand is seen as a necessary evolutionary step if online and mobile video is going to reach its potential from a CPM standpoint. The Dallas-based start-up, which handles back end support for all of MySpace’s mobile video traffic, also envisions transactional video encoding as a crucial step in streamlining ad serving operations and saving on bandwidth costs as more broadcasters commit to full-episode streaming.

Leading mobile publisher network Crisp Wireless, which now claims a user base of over 30 million uniques a month, released some interesting facts this week about the state of mobile web traffic, which grew by 94.67% across its network in 2008:
  • The emerging dominance of smart phones for mobile web browsing and the rapid growth of the iPhone stand out as the dominant trends; In Q1, Blackberry represented 17.33% of traffic and iPhone only 9.1%, but by year-end, Blackberry represented 23.98% and iPhone had grown to 22.98%
  • The number of visits per unique user rose slightly over the course of the year, as mobile web services became more mainstream and devices enable easier browsing, with categories such as entertainment and sports demonstrating the most “stickiness”
  • The average page views per user has dropped slightly, but certain categories demonstrated greater interaction including women’s lifestyle, sports and entertainment
  • The % of traffic driven from mobile search engines is slowly growing, while the % of traffic coming from carrier decks continues to drop. The trend is expected to continue as smartphones enable easier browsing and site discovery and mobile search improves
  • Online services (Fandango, etc) and local categories have the highest % of traffic driven by mobile search. However women’s lifestyle surged in the second half of 2008

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

One of the unexpected uses for Twitter is as conduit for breaking news stories such as the much documented plane crash of US Airways flight 1549 into the Hudson river in Jan. News spread of the crash on Twitter before any print or TV journalist could pick up the story. Since then journalists find themselves trolling the microblogging site for scoops. Marketers also obsess over daily chatter. But the problem is that there has been no easy interface with which to search by event or interest. Viewing the cavalcade of tweets can be like looking at The Matrix. Enter Tinker, a new service from Glam Media that creates a visual interface to allow users to follow posts from events or gatherings, whether it be posts from SXSW or the conversations around the latest episode of Lost. The site launched in beta yesterday with over 100,000 posts from more than 25,000 members surrounding 200 events in categories including Awards, Causes, Conferences, Fashion, Festivals, Movies, Music, News, Politics, Sports and TV. Tinker is not exclusive to Twitter – it also aggregates and curates real time conversations from Facebook, Friendfeed and other micro-blogging platforms. The site could also go a long way in helping to finally monetize sites like Twitter. Glam is positioning Tinker as a “micro-blogging network,” building a Micro-Payments platform which calculates posts and page views and doles out ad revenue with content creators.
