Cynopsis: Sports
04.17.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 17, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The sports world lost a great one, with the death of Pat Summerall at the age of 82. Summerall was part of 16 Super Bowl broadcasts, teaming with John Madden in the broadcast booth for 21 years on both CBS and FOX. An outpouring of emotion from around the industry poured. Here are a few:

Pat was my broadcasting partner for a long time, but more than that he was my friend for all of these years. We never had one argument, and that was because of Pat. He was a great broadcaster and a great man. He always had a joke. Pat never complained and we never had an unhappy moment. He was something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be. – John Madden

It is with tremendous sadness that we’ve learned today of Pat Summerall’s passing.  Pat was an icon in his profession, and was the voice that defined the NFL on television for generations of fans.  He and John Madden helped give FOX Sports and the NFL on FOX credibility when it launched almost 20 years ago, and for that we’ll be forever grateful.  Pat’s 50-year record as an NFL player and broadcaster is truly unique, and it will be very difficult for anyone to ever walk in his footsteps.  Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Pat’s wife Cheri and the Summerall family. – FOX Sports Media Group

There is no one more closely associated with the great legacy and tradition of CBS Sports than Pat Summerall.  His voice was synonymous with big events whether it was NFL football and the Super Bowl, the Masters or U.S. Open Tennis. – Sean McManus, Chairman, CBS Sports

Saddened to hear the passing of the great Pat Summerall. RIP. Tom Brookshire just got his buddy and booth partner back. – NFL Network’s Rich Eisen via Twitter

NFL and all who were blessed to know Pat Summerall will mourn his passing but celebrate his life. A very sweet man. – ESPN’s Chris Mortensen via Twitter

On the Air

NBC Sports Group revealed plans to offer all 380 games of the 2013-14 Barclays Premier League season live as part of its new deal with the organization. The schedule launches on Saturday, August 17, with games set to be broadcast on NBC, NBC Sports Network, the Premier League Extra Time package of overflow television channels, the NBC Sports Live Extra website and app, as well as other NBCUniversal channels including CNBC and USA. Overall, NBC will carry 20 games while NBC Sports Network will offer 154. There will also be 76 Spanish-language telecasts, with 10 running on Telemundo and 66 on Mun2. NBC Sports Network will present more than 600 hours each year of studio and original programming surrounding Premier League with series that include Premier League Countdown, Premier League Download, Game Cut-Downs, and Match of the Day.

On-air talent will include Arlo White as the lead play-by-play voice, analysts Lee Dixon and Graeme Le Saux and special contributor Gary Lineker. Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe will serve as studio analysts, alongside studio host Rebecca Lowe from NBC Sports Group’s Premier League studio in Stamford, Conn.

The Seattle Mariners and TV rights holder DIRECTV Sports Networks are launching a new regional sports network partnership for the Pacific Northwest. The deal will see the Mariners hold a majority stake while DIRECTV Sports Networks assumes a minority position and will continue to oversee the day-to-day management of the channel. Under the agreement, the network will televise Mariners baseball through the end of the 2030 Major League Baseball season. DIRECTV Sports Network’s current Root Sports Northwest entity and related assets will be contributed into a new jointly owned entity, which will operate under the existing Root Sports brand. In addition to the Mariners, the network will also offer other professional, collegiate and high school sports programming year-round.

FX’s last telecast of The Ultimate Fighter was also its best, according to Nielsen, with the UFC program delivering network highs in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, while the entire 17th season of the show marked FX’s highest-rated of the series. The episode drew 1.71 million viewers with 1.16 million among adults 18-49, both bests for the channel. The next season of TUF will air on the newly launched FS1 starting Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 10p.

Monday’s Boston tragedy is prompting other sports organizers to beef up security starting with both the London Marathon this weekend, as well as the NFL Draft. NFL.com reports that the league will “review and enhance our already comprehensive security plans with the NYPD, Radio City and our private security partners” for the draft. In addition, officials are examining the security challenges facing next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, as well as the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio, according to the AP.

Speaking of the NFL, the NFL 2013 regular season schedule will be announced tomorrow at 8p with broadcast highlights and primetime games finally revealed.

CBS Sports Network is slating six days of coverage leading up to the 2013 Draft with a total of nine shows previewing the annual event, highlighted by a two-hour special Mock Draft show on Wednesday, April 24 on the eve of the Draft. Adam Zucker, Brent Stoverand Adam Schein split hosting duties across the nine shows.

ESPN is offering 29 hours of coverage of X Games Foz do Iguacu 2013 that will be distributed across multiple broadcast and digital platforms from April 18-21 live from Brazil. ESPN and ESPN2 carry 23 hours of original programming and ESPN will also air a two-hour anthology show on ABC on Sunday, April 27. Ramona Bruland will host the action on the two networks.

The final Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park will be played on Dec. 27 in primetime. The San Francisco-based post-season college football game announced that the matchup will take place at 6:30 on ESPN, matching up BYU and a team from the Pac-12. Next year, the game will move to the New Santa Clara Stadium.

Outside Television expanded its relationship with IMG Media, adding three primetime feature films to the lineup. The first, The North Canyon, showcases extreme waterman and pro big wave surfer Garrett “GMAC” McNamara’s preparation and global chase to break the world record for surfing the largest wave. Other movies will include Life Cycles and H2 Indo.

The NYU-SCPS Tisch Center honored the recipients of the Sixth Annual NYU Sports Business Society Awards last night. Winners included John J. Filippelli, president of production and programming for the YES Network as Executive of the Year, Mets’ Director of Media Relations Shannon Forde for the Lauren Beam Philanthropy Award and Major League Baseball Advanced Media and the New York Road Runners as Ambassadors of the Year.

Lots of surprises! See you at the Cynopsis: Sports Media Awards this morning.
