~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Univision Communications Inc.’s EVP/COO Randy Falco said yesterday the company is planning to launch up to three new Spanish-language cable networks in the US in the coming year. One new network would focus on telenovelas tentatively titled UniNovelas and launch as early as third quarter.  A new sports channel called Univision Deportes which would emphasize Mexican league soccer could roll out during the first half of 2012 while a 24/7 news network is also in the development stages titled Univision 24-7.  Univision Communications says in the next year it will spend $20 million to $30 million on new television networks and sales efforts and another $40 million on new license agreements for soccer tournaments.

Eva Luna with its two-hour conclusion Monday night at 8p posted an average of 6.9 million total viewers for Univision Network. Eva Luna is Univision Studios’ first novela production and the primetime drama has become the highest-rated US-produced novela in history and further ranks as one of Univision’s top ten novela finale episodes ever. 

This Thursday, a new reality docu-series Triple Rush debuts on Travel Channel giving viewers an action-packed look at how bike messengers operate in New York City.  A slew of hi-def cameras will document the action of the men and women who work for three different courier companies  one a large corporation, a family-run business and the third a four-person co-op.  Triple Rush opens April 14 at 10p and is produced by 3 Ball Productions/Eyeworks USA for the Travel Channel.

Animated series South Park is 15 years old as a 15th season with seven new episodes open on Comedy Central April 27 at 10p.  Also on April 26, South Park: The Complete Fourteenth Season will be released nationally on DVD and Blu-ray by Comedy Central Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment.

For the May 25 finale episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, advertisers are apparently anteing up $1 million per 30-second commercial.  More premium positions within the concluding episode could go even higher in price.

CMT canceled its first scripted sitcom Working Class starring Melissa Peterman.  The first season ended on April 1 and its debut episode in January delivered 1.2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating among A18-49.  Peterman continues to host CMT’s The Singing Bee premiering this Friday. 

Eight-part series Human Planet premieres on Discovery en Espanol April 25 at 8p and is narrated for the network by actor/filmmaker Gael Garcia Bernal.  Human Planet is a co-production of BBC and Discovery Channel.

TLC precedes the second season return of Quints By Surprise with a special celebrating the Jones quintuplets’ 2nd birthday on April 18 at 9p.  The second season of Quints By Surprise opens May 9 at 10p. 

Season three of River Monsters on Animal Planet attracted more than 1.6 million total viewers Sunday at 10p as well as 836,000 among A18-49.  The series continues with new episodes airing each Sunday at 10p.

PBS said its Masterpiece franchise in its 40th season has boosted viewers during the past year by 45%.  Additionally, the premiere of new miniseries Upstairs Downstairs on Sunday was viewed by an estimated 6.4 million total viewers per Nielsen’s data from 53 metered markets.

The two-hour, two-episode finale of The Kennedys at 8p on Sunday tallied nearly 1.5 million average minute viewers and a 1.86 coverage area HH rating, making it the highest-rated program in the history of Reelzchannel.  Also, all three combined airings of the finale episode pulled in 1.9 million viewers.  Reelzchannel will air encores of The Kennedys this Saturday with episodes 1-4 airing back-to-back at 10a and 10p; then on Sunday the final four eps (5-8) will air back-to-back at 10a and 10p.

Being Human on Syfy is the network’s highest-rated new winter scripted series since Battlestar Galactica in 2005, as the season one finale delivered 1.6 million total viewers; 1.0 million A25-54 viewers; and 944,000 among A18-49 on Monday at 9p. Being Human was recently renewed by Syfy for a second season.

Premiere numbers are in for The Judds launching on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network this past Sunday at 9p.  The two-hour episode filed 1.7 million cumulative viewers from 9p-11p and 620,000 with W25-54.

UPFRONT 2011:  The Style Network

The Style Network incorporates a variety of topics in the network’s new development slate for the 2011-2012 season.  First up, though are two new series joining the lineup this year and a twist on an established series:

  • Big Rich Texas – One-hour docu-series with 10 episodes takes viewers on the inside of the elite Dallas social scene following five rich and competitive mothers and their spoiled daughters.  Series produced by Fly on the Wall Productions premieres this July.
  • Glam Fairy – Spinoff of the network’s Jerseylicious series, this makeover format follows energetic makeup artist, Alexa Prisco.  After exiting the Gatsby Salon, Alexa establishes a new business, The Glam Factory where she uses her signature New Jersey style to transform women with new looks.  Produced by Endemol USA, the series will kick-off in October.
  • How Do I Look?: The Search for the Worst Dressed in America – Style takes its popular franchise with host Jeannie Mai and hits the road traveling the country to find the worst fashion catastrophes.  Once the winner is revealed, the person travels to Hollywood for the ultimate makeover.  The new multi-part event will air this September. How Do I Look? is produced by The Style Network.

Style Network series in development:

  • Birth Moms – Docu-series set inside a residential-style adoption center in Orem, Utah where expectant mothers complete their pregnancies before giving up their babies for adoption. 
  • The Amandas – Amanda LeBlanc from Birmingham, Alabama helms this home makeover show where she and her team of other “Amandas” organize people’s homes.
  • Single With 7 – Series centers on L.A. radio DJ Yesi Ortiz, who is also “mom” to her seven nieces and nephews. Yesi has taken on the responsibility of raising her sister’s kids who were put into foster care when her sister was sent to prison. 
  • Lifestyle Weekly Series – Weekly half-hour series co-hosted by Adrianne Curry, Vivica A. Fox, Nick Verreos and Ali Fedotowsky who will take on timely style topics aiming at the network’s viewers.
  • Are You Dressed? – Part game show, part fashion show, this series ambushes shoppers after entering their dressing rooms with on-the-spot trivia questions where they can win cash and prizes.
  • Miss Fit – Series set inside Boston’s Miss Fit Club, a women’s only fitness club managed by Katie Boyd, a former beauty queen. 
  • The Riveras – Docu-series set in Queens, NY featuring The Riveras, a Puerto Rican family who owns two neighborhood dance studios.
  • The Look for Less – Style Network is bringing back the franchise and giving the show its own makeover utilizing social media and YouTube.
  • Makeover Madness – A team of experts in hair, beauty and fashion try to break world records with the most makeovers in one sitting.  Cat Deeley will host this new series.
  • Maureen Hancock’s Ghost Town – Maureen is a working New England mom who talks to the dead and has a mission of transforming people’s lives by helping clients overcome a variety of issues.

UPFRONT 2011:  truTV

truTV participates in its second annual Upfront serving up renewals and extra episodes of existing series and a slate of new projects as well as one major acquisition.

truTV new projects:

  • Semi-Pro (wt) – Series follows a group of men who participate in a semi-pro football team. From NFL Films.
  • MotoClash (wt) – The network takes a close-up look at the World MotoClash race, the longest and most dangerous motorcycle race ever. Produced by RD Independent Productions with executive producers Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Mary Lisio and David Zucker of Scott Free.
  • Guinness World Records (wt) – Guinness World Record holding brothers, Craig and Paul Pumphrey coach others on how to break records.  From High Noon Entertainment.
  • Impractical Jokers – Series centers on four lifelong friends who strive to embarrass each other in public by using hidden cameras.  Produced by NorthSouth Productions.
  • Chill – Series profiles Joe O’Donoghue or “Joey Ice” an ice sculptor and his team as they create over-the-top ice sculptures.  From Entertainment One Television and Left/Right.
  • South Beach Tow – Series follows the family-owned Tremont Towing business located in South Beach.  Produced by Nuyorican Productions and Bodega Pictures.
  • Hollywood Taxi – Mike Grasso owns a fleet of 290 taxi cabs operating in Hollywood.  From Irwin Entertainment.
  • Bear Swamp Recovery – Sicilian family owns a New Jersey-based repossession company, the Bear Swamp Recovery repossessing items from careless vacationers in the summer.  Bischoff-Hervey Entertainment produces.

Acquired series for truTV:

  • truTV picked up the off-network exclusive cable rights to Wipeout produced by Endemol USA.  Wipeout first premiered on ABC in 2008 and the series will debut on truTV this fall.

Renewals and episodes extensions for existing truTV series:

  • Hardcore Pawn – Series granted a fourth season centered on the large Detroit-based pawn shop and the family who runs it. From Zodiak USA.
  • Black Gold – The network renewed the series for a fourth season about the roughneck crews in the oil fields of Texas.  Original Productions, a FremantleMedia company produces.
  • Full Throttle Saloon – Viewers will experience more of motorcycles and mayhem at the annual biker rally in Sturgis, SD during the series’ third season. Produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions.
  • Lizard Lick Towing – truTV orders more episodes of the series’ frosh season featuring the towing and repo company based in Lizard Lick, NC.  Zodiak USA produces.

A new television series about the startup of a website by three 20-something single New York women has Kelsey Grammer on board as producer.  Grammer will link up with executive producers Stella Stolper and Brian Sher to form a new production company, G3, which will serve as co-producers of the series with Zodiak.  The project will follow the women as they launch their site which they started based on their shared frustration about their present-day lives.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC waltzed away with the best ratings Monday night among A18-49 at 4.0/11, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, ABC’s Dancing with the Stars kicked into #1 with a 4.1/12 with FOX’s House nearly a full point lower in #2 at 3.2/9.  Dancing with the Stars ratings increased for ABC during 9p to a winning 4.9/12 and the second hour of Univision’s Eva Luna was next at 3.0/7.  Also at 9p, NBC premiered the revamped Law & Order: Los Angeles with a 1.4/4, ranking fifth this hour.  ABC finished off a clean sweep of the night at 10p with Castle at 3.0/8 and CBS’ Hawaii Five-O trailed in second with 2.5/7.

Don Browne, President of NBCUniversal’s Telemundo Communications Group said he will retire from the company June 3, which marks the eighth anniversary of his joining Telemundo as COO.  NBCUniversal will announce a replacement for Don in the coming months.

Richard Beach named Gambling Product and Implementation Manager EMEA at FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  Richard will head the product development and implementation over online, land-based and mobile channels.  He will report directly to Simon Murphy, Head/Gambling for EMEA.

iN DEMAND L.L.C. elevated Eric Petro to EVP/CFO and Mark Boccardi to SVP/Programming and Business Development.  Mark will report to Eric Petro.  Both executives are located at company headquarters in New York.  

Former Account Director at Zenith Media, Michael Maze joined Initiative as VP/Director, Local Broadcast in the company’s New York office.  Michael will oversee the daily operations of the New York local broadcast group and also supervise activities for local activation on the Hyundai Eastern Region Dealer Association.
