CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

04/12/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 12, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

The Interactive Entertainment Merchants Assoc. (IEMA) and the Video Software Dealers Assoc. (VSDA) have elected to merge into a single trade association, which will represent retailers and distributors of video and videogame products.  The two associations have been rallying in tandem against proposed violent game bills.  In fact the groups have been working so closely over the most recent past in February of this year they jointly hired Stuart Spencer to represent them and their interests as a lobbyist in Washington DC.  The constituency of the yet unnamed combined trade group will include mass merchants, video specialty stores, videogame specialty retailers, online merchants, electronics retailers, entertainment combo stores, and others that retail and wholesale DVDs, console videogames and computer videogames.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The animated series Franny’s Feet will launch in the US on PBS Kids beginning Saturday, July 8 (check local listings).  The PBS Kids broadcast of the series, produced by Decode Entertainment in association with Thirteen/WNET, will debuts with 26 half hour episodes, which will also feature new educational and interactive content currently being produced by Decode.  Drawing from content within the episodes, in the new segments Franny prompts the audience to interact with her in various activities.  Additionally, PBS will feature an online component of the show.  Commissioned by the UK’s Five and Canada’s Family Channel, in each episode Franny is helping out at her Grandpa’s shoe repair shop every afternoon, where she inevitably tries on a pair of shoes, which transports her different imaginary adventures depending on the type of shoes (e.g. Mukluks take her to the arctic).

Working Title Films has tapped director Steve Bendelack to direct Bean II, starring Rowan Atkinson, naturally.  Scheduled to begin principle photography next month, Bean II is the sequel to Bean (1977), and this time Mr. Bean’s vacation to the South of France winds up coinciding with the Cannes Film Festival and … mayhem ensues.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In celebration of Earth Day 2006, Boomerang will premiere 13 episodes of the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, previously unseen in the US, on April 22, 7:30-11:30a.  The environmentally conscious superhero and series were developed from an idea from Ted Turner.  The series launched on TBS in 1990.

Cookie Jar Entertainment Inc.’s music-based preschool series The Doodlebops (26 x 30 min) will debut on Playhouse Disney in the UK on 24 April 2006, where it will air weekdays.

Zone Mobile, the new mobile media division of Zone Vision Networks, and content publisher Player X have inked a mobile content agreement.  Under the deal, Player X will distribute mobile video clips of shows from Zone Vision’s Reality TV channel to operators in territories including the UK, Eastern and Central Europe, Western Europe, and South-East Asia.  Content from Reality TV programming including Crash Bang, Motor Sports, Rodeo Wrecks, Freaks and Cheaters will be available as wallpapers, screensavers, downloadable and streaming videos and ringtones.  Targeted to P16-34, with a secondary audience of P25-54, Reality TV is a 24/7 network that is available in 125+ territories and is broadcast in 22 languages.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Universal Studios and Mattel have inked a multi-picture/multi-year worldwide marketing and distribution pact for feature-length DVDs based on Mattel properties including the Barbie Entertainment franchise and Polly Pocket brand.  Under the deal the first DVD titles, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses and PollyWorld, are both slated for release this fall 2006.  While there have been seven full length Barbie DVD titles released, this is a first for Polly Pocket.  In support of the releases, Mattel will launch a line of toys and licensed products based on both titles.  Marketing efforts for both DVDs will include TV ads and promotional tie-ins with McDonald’s Happy Meal program in the US and Canada and with Brach’s candy.  Additionally, PollyWorld will have a Burger King kids meal tie-in across international territories, a Nickelodeon sweepstakes, and a trailer for the movie will be featured on DVDs of Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia, The Barbie Diaries, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, Nanny McPhee, Curious George and Land Before Time XII: Day of the Flyers.

BKN International AG and Grand Toys International Ltd will launch a line of Legend of the Dragon toys this September 2006, which are based on BKN’s animated series (39 x 30 min) of the same name.  The Legend of the Dragon toy line will feature action figures and accessories, activity sets and role-playing products and will coincide with the premiere on the Jetix block.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) are going mobile under a new licensing agreement between 4Kids Entertainment, Mirage Licensing, Inc. and uclick mobile.  Offered by uclick mobile the Turtles mobile content will include wallpapers, screensavers, games, video and mobile comic book readers featuring characters from the comic books and animated TV series, which airs Saturday mornings on the 4KidsTV block on Fox.  uclick mobile will also provide content to coincide with the new TMNT CG-animated feature film slated for release in early 2007.

Atlus U.S.A., Inc., a publisher of interactive entertainment, has acquired the North American publishing rights to Battle B-Daman and Battle B-Daman 2.  Both games are based on the animated series of the same name.  Battle B-Daman is slated for a summer 2006 release, which will be followed by Battle B-Daman 2 in fall 2006. Both games were developed in Japan by Atlus Co., Ltd. Battle B-Daman and Battle B-Daman 2, neither game has been rated by the ESRB as of yet.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
