Good morning, it’s Wednesday, April 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Based on its forthcoming rebrand and move toward unscripted drama, Court TV has cancelled the legal news show Catherine Crier Live, as reported in Broadcasting & Cable. The show, which debuted in January 2000, is expected to be replaced in its weekday 5p slot by repeats of the reality show Psychic Detectives. Furthermore, Catherine Crier, whose contract had expired and has been with Court TV since 1999, will leave her post as Executive Editor/Legal News Specials. Staffers on her show were informed of the change yesterday during a 3p meeting. At it’s upfront in March 2007, Court TV said it will unveil its new name, a new look and programming strategy on January 1, 2008.
Tonight’s Finales:
Fox: ’til Death at 8p
NBC: Friday Night Lights at 8p
Bravo: Top Design at 10p
Tonight’s Premiere:
Bravo: Shear Genius at 11p
The Don Imus verbal snafu has created a great deal of conversation these last few days – yesterday came news the Rutgers team would meet with Imus, and three major advertisers have pulled out – P&G and Staples from the MSNBC rotation, and Bigelow Tea out of his radio show on CBS’ WFAN radio station. Cynopsis subscribers and readers are no different. They also have an opinion. Check out today’s Emails to the Editor at the base of this edition where one reader went on the record …
Eleven finalists are honing their culinary skills to appear on the third season of Food Network’s The Next Food Network Star which premieres June 3 at 9p with a special two-hour episode. This season, the finalists will compete inside the Food Network studios and in the field cooking for an NBA team and whipping up dishes for an Army barracks among other challenges. The winner will be revealed during the series finale on July 22 at 9p and then later reappear on the network in a six-episode show of their own. The series is produced by CBS EYE too Productions.
TLC is redefining its Saturday night property programming block by moving out its six-year old series Trading Spaces. In its place beginning April 21, TLC will bring in the new one-hour series The Real Deal which follows Richard Davis and his team at Trademark Properties as they evaluate houses for investment potential. This series is produced by Brainbox Productions. Then at 10p, TLC will air two episodes of its second new series My First Home back-to-back. In each of the 12 half-hour episodes, viewers will watch as first-time homebuyers learn the ropes of home buying and negotiating. My First Home is produced by Authentic Entertainment.
The premiere episode of the final season of The Sopranos on HBO drew 7.7 million viewers for the 9pm airing, down from the 8.6 million viewers who tuned in for last season’s premiere in March 2006.
United Soccer Leagues (USL) and Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) have renewed their on-going relationship through the 2009 season. Their new deal includes Fox Soccer Channel acquiring the exclusive English-language rights to certain Friday night USL First Division matches as well as all USL League Championship games 27 games per year for three years. In addition, the deal involves broadband and mobile rights and the right to broadcast matches on FSC’s sister networks that include Fox Sports en Español, Fox Sports World Canada and Fox Sports Middle East/Africa.
CBS Sports’ two-day coverage of the 2007 Masters on April 7-8 was watched in all-or-part by an estimated 41.4 million P2+ viewers. This total viewer number over the two days was up 11% from last year’s 37.3 million viewers.
TV One scored the highest ratings in the network’s history during the first night of its 30th anniversary telecast of the epic miniseries Roots. The premiere episode, which aired from 8-10p on April 8, received a 1.1 HH rating, with an average of 413,000 households tuning in.
VERSUS will add coverage of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) to its line-up starting June 3 with a live fight and one-hour event special. WEC is the mixed martial arts league owned by Zuffa, LLC and VERSUS will air three live fights and six one-hour specials on various dates in June and August until September 5. Each live event will take place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and the 60m event specials are a taped compilation of WEC fights not previously shown on television.
NFL Network is offering cable affiliates 12 hours of exclusive VOD coverage of the NFL Draft, to be held April 13 and 14. Comcast, Cox, Insight, Bresnan and Verizon have agreed to carry the content, which includes 5-minute profiles of the top 100 prospects.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is circulating a plan that would require cable operators to carry both analog and digital feeds from TV stations from early 2009. The plan includes a caveat allowing operators to drop the analog format if all their subscribers had tuners required to receive local DTV signals. As it stands now, digital stations that elect must-carry after February 17, 2009 won’t be seen in cable homes without digital tuners.

- Cynthia…isn’t racial slur a bit coloring of his comments? No, what he said wasn’t very thoughtful, but nappy is not necessarily a racial term – it’s an adjective. Imus makes comments about everybody and always has. He makes fun of Christians, Jews, all kinds of other religions, people and races and he always has.
- The only crime here is that Imus is suspended for using FREE SPEECH. I’m surprised at your coloring of the issue by putting the emphasis on the racial slur. If he had called them ni**er hoes, that would be one thing. (Editor’s note: the original word here was altered so not to set off your spam alarms.)
- Just ask yourself this question: would we be having this news story if he had called a tough-looking group of white women basketball players from the rural midwest “trailer trash tramps”?
- I don’t think so. We’d go “oooh” and then forget about it.
- It’s America. It’s not Rev. Sharpton’s Republic. It’s time people stopped listening to this fear-imposing radical and remember our own freedoms.
- I just think we need to stop this ridiculous fear that is being imposed on anyone. If anyone speaks out and it offends a certain group, it seems that they are punished by the media, not the law, because it’s not illegal.
- But they are penalized as if it were illegal. Imus was suspended for two weeks, but curiously not right away – just when it was convenient for his bosses. So, is it really an issue or just placating a loud constituency?
