Good morning, it’s Tuesday, September 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Two media powerhouses have joined forces. Google signed a deal with NBC Universal to begin brokering some spot TV ads on a selection of the group’s cable networks including Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth, and Chiller. The partnership will represent the first time Google has acted as an ad middleman for a TV network, although Google launched an auction-based online ad network with little success last year (so far integrated only with Echostar’s Dish Network.) NBC hopes Google will be able to provide it with unprecedented data on viewership and usage to help marketers make real-time adjustments in their media buys. On the local level, NBCU and Google have also agreed to work jointly on adapting the Google TV Ads platform for local market use.

LonelyGirl 15 Jessica Rose‘s continues to be the “It girl” of online video. Her newest show Sorority Forever launched yesterday on TheWB.com, another soapy conspiratorial mystery from McG and Big Fantastic, the producers of Prom Queen. (New episodes are available daily at 9 am p in a 24-hour exclusive window on TheWB.com and MySpaceTV, before being distributed across partner sites.) She’s also starring with YouTube comedian KevJumba and other internet personalities in a 10 episode web series for HBO premiering Oct. 1. Hooking Up is the first sustained scripted project from HBO’s online studio HBOlab. 
Additional Warner Bros. Television Group properties including The O.C., Smallville, One Tree Hill and Veronica Mars are also now viewable in a series of new branded channels on the MySpace TV portal. Users are able to embed videos into personal profiles, blogs, bulletins and comments sections both inside and outside of the MySpace environment.
The syndicated version of Endemol Productions’ Deal or No Deal is hoping to attract viewer interest with an online sweepstakes component. Click on a case (and register) for a chance at $10,000 each week. The Deal or No Deal Club will be promoted on air and via local affiliate websites.
Logo‘s newly launched 365gay News is having a launch of its own this week with the new 365gay News: Roundtable, a new Face-the-Nation style roundtable focusing on LGBT issues. The 30-minute show will be simultaneously televised nationally on Logo’s 365gay News during its regular Thursday 7p airtime. The first installment is already available online.


iWidgets signed its first major content provider for its Social Syndication Platform. CBS Interactive will be using the platform to stream full ad supported episodes of prime time shows including the CSI franchise, NCIS and Numbe3rs to personal profile pages of Facebook and MySpace, where young users spend a majority of their time online. The iWidgets tool allows users to watch, share and participate in interactive elements developed around the programming including sponsored polls and contests.  
Mobile video services platform Transpera signed deals with MTV Networks, Discovery, AccuWeather.com, Travel Channel and Next New Networks to deliver video to mobile users in an off-deck model. Transpera is one of the more comprehensive mobile video solutions providing ad sales, delivery, management and integration services.


There are tons of new gadgets and apps being unveiled this week at the DemoFall show in San Diego built to help the PC and TV develop a closer relationship. The show is a huge pitch session for tech companies; each presenter is given 6 minutes to wow the crowd with their latest and greatest inventions.   • Bee TV is a personalized multiplatform IPG that learns to recommend what you might want to watch based on past preferences, mood, the time of the day and what room your TV set is in. Best of all it integrates with linear TV, VOD, IPTV, and mobile devices
  • ffwd is a web video navigation tool built around “channels” of recommended programming from partners including Hulu, CBS and Comedy Central. One cool offering is group chat, allowing up to 12 users view and chat while watching something
  • RemoTV is a personal media platform allowing users to access and share media from their PC to a multiple devices including 3G multimedia phones and Windows Mobile smart phones. Support is also planned for game counsels like Microsoft’s Xbox and the iPhone
  • RealNetworks released RealDVD for PCs, a new $30 (for a limited time) piece of software that enables users to copy DVDs they’ve purchased on their computers without actually cracking the copyright protection they’re shipped with.

Content Delivery Network BitGravity has launched a single ASN global IP network for Tata Communications, capable of delivering HD quality content throughout Europe, Asia, North America and India. The underwater tier-1 IP network connects more than 200 countries across 300 PoPs and more than 1 million square feet of data center and co-location facilities. Tata also made a strategic $11.5 million investment in Burlinghame, CA-based BitGravity.
Dolby Labs’ 3D Digital Cinema solution is now being picked up for adoption in Europe and Asia by exhibitors including Hoyts, Cinemax and Kenepolis Group. The company recently recorded its 500th overall shipment of the system, powered by Texas Instrument’s DLP technology, which allows theaters to project movies in 3D format.


Crisp Wireless recruited Nokia Interactive Advertising and AdMob to join its mobile advertising initiative. The consortium is being put together to enable Crisp Publisher Network members to better monetize mobile content using mediums such as search, banner ads and text ads.
Video ad solution provider VideoClix signed a deal to power Attention Span Media’s Dorm Life web series with clickable ads and other interactive features. Viewers will also have the ability to click on items in the videos to find out more information about the story, characters and objects they are watching.


San Francisco-based Global digital ad services firm AdGent 007 hired John E. Marcom, Jr. as COO. John has served as an executive and journalist for a range of companies including Yahoo!, Time Inc. and The Financial Times. He was also head of revenue for AtomFilms before it was acquired by Viacom.
Neal Scarbrough has joined Comcast’s Versus as VP/Digital Media. He will oversee digital media strategies and the management of versus.com as well as serve as the site’s Editor-in-Chief. John comes to Versus from Wasserman Media Group/Sportnet where he was VP and Editor-in-Chief.
Online advertising company Media6° hired Andrew Pancer as COO as the start-up prepares for its commercial launch. Andrew was VP of Digital Development for the New York Times Co. and COO of About.com.
.FOX Networks, the international ad network operated by Fox International Channels, appointed  Daija Arias as Online Regional Ad Sales Director for the New England and Central U.S. territories. Based in .FOX’s New York office, he will provide strategic direction for the .FOX sales team and lead media sales efforts. Daija will report directly to Online Ad Sales Director, Rafael Hernandez.
Crisp Wireless
named former GM of online ad network Quigo Thomas Foran as its new Chief Revenue Officer. Tom will be based in New York and report directly to CEO Boris Fridman.
Former ABC publicist Nicole Nichols has been named SVP/Communications and Strategy for OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. In her new role, Nicole will serve as chief spokesperson and develop and implement internal and external communications strategies for the multiplatform joint venture between Discovery Communications and Harpo Productions.


Here’s another ad supported video search/navigation interface that just launched yesterday designed to organize, suggest and personalize your online viewing experience. Washington D.C.-based Invision.tv most resembles the traditional cable IPG in that it organizes clips by channel or content provider. For those who like the layback, surfing experience, it’s not a bad way to go. Pull down menus at the top allow you to access collections by channel, interest, genre and people. The social networking aspect of the site looks promising; groups who share interests can organize their own channels and invite friends to add them to their collections. The beta is very rough looking – the video thumbnails look like they’ve squashed together and thrown into a fish tank  – but presumably that can be corrected. The ease of use here in creating playlists and publishing them to other platforms will really be crucial to Invision’s success.
