Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 7, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
The FCC is expected to lay down a $550,000 fine on CBS for violation of indecency rules, going back to last winter’s Super Bowl half time show. The fine is the total of a $27,500 fine on each of the CBS O&O stations carrying the half time show. The argument is still out there and expected to be furthered by Commissioner Adelstein, that each of the CBS affiliated stations should also be fined. CBS has issued a statement saying that while they regret it happened, they don’t believe any indecency rules were violated.
Tonight’s Premieres: FOX: The Next Great Champ at 9pm
Thursday from 8-10p was largely a night of repeats, with three exceptions: WWE Smackdown (UPN), Big Brother (CBS) and the finale of Studio 7 (WB). The overall result of the night was a win among A18-49 for CBS with a mild 3.1/9 rating according to Nielsen Media Research. Big Brother delivered a 3.6/11; WWE Smackdown a 1.9/6 for the evening, and the final episode of Studio 7 on the WB offered up a tidy 1.2/4. Of the new shows currently on the air, there were two on Thursday night – Father of the Pride [r] at 930 on NBC (2.9/8) and Blue Collar TV [r] at 8p on WB (1.3/4). It was also the final night of the Republican National Convention which all three broadcasters carried at 10p: NBC 2.2/6, CBS 1.9/5 and ABC 1.7/5 among A18-49 for a combined total of approx 17 million total viewers. All in all, a slow night.
The first evening of the long holiday weekend was a slow one for primetime broadcast television, with the big winner on Friday being NBC with a 2.7/9 (see what I mean about a slow night?) A19-49 rating according to Nielsen Media Research. Among the new series of the season airing on Friday night, there was The Complex: Malibu on Fox at 8pm which delivered a 1.3/5; as well as Fox’s Totally Outrageous Behavior at 9p (1.2/4) and World’s Craziest Videos at 930p (1.4/5). A repeat of Hawaii on NBC from 10-11p averaged a 1.9/7. Blue Collar TV [r] on the WB at 930p found a soft 1.1/4.
A slight change from the typical Saturday night wherein Fox is out in front on most weeks. This time, CBS won the night in Fast National Ratings by a tenth of a demo point, though the two nets tied in share: CBS 2.1/8, Fox 2.0/8 A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research. An original airing of Amazing Race (1.6/6) at 8pm came in second behind two eps of Cops on Fox (1.9/8), though Big Brother was ahead of America’s Most Wanted (2.8/10 vs. 2.1/7). NBC’s ep of Hawaii at 9p ranked 4th for the hour behind ABC, with a 1.2/4. At 10p, CBS led with Crossing Jordan’s 2.0/7.
The big winner on Sunday night was NBC with a modest 2.9/10 A18-49 for an evening of all NASCAR Racing’s California 500, according to Nielsen Media Research. Aside from CBS’ 60 Minutes (2.1/9 demo rating), everything else was a repeat as this final weekend of summer winds down.
Casting / Production / Development:
Former SNLer Cheri Oteri is reportedly in conversations with J.J. Abrams (Alias) to develop a comedy project for Oteri. According to Hollywood Reporter, the project is being considered by ABC. This would be Abrams first comedy project.
John Leguizamo has signed a development deal with Fox for a sitcom based on his life and comedy. Fox has ordered a script.
Comedy Central is teaming up David Spade and Gavin Palone for a new pilot, Gone Hollywood, roughly based on Spade’s SNL bit, Hollywood Minute, says Variety. Another pilot, also spearing Hollywood entertainment magazine programs, called The Hollywood Show, has been shot, featuring Brian Unger (Daily Show).
In case you were following Ken Jennings nightly additions to his bank account before the summer college repeats of Jeopardy! kicked in, you’ll be glad to know episodes ‘starring’ the $1.3 million plus winner, begin again this evening.
