Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 6, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Just received an email from a friend of mine I called about three months ago, thanking me for his promotion. I did nothing to deserve it but really appreciated the call. Here is what happened.
My friend works at a company on the outskirts of the television industry, and at Cynopsis, our readers know that everyday we ask a trivia question about TV. I noticed the day before we published, a name of a person who answered correctly who works at the same company my buddy does. I called my friend and asked him if he knew Jim, up in Sales, he said he did not. I told him to give him a call, because in tomorrow’s edition, his name would be the first listed in “Kudos to:”, the list of the people who got the trivia question correct.
My friend made the phone call, Jim was overjoyed not that only had he gotten the question right, but that he would be listed first. The two talked on the phone for a while and agreed to meet in person for some coffee. Nothing to do with business, they just liked each other. They started to meet once a week, talking about their shared love for the game of baseball, and some business, eventually talking more and more about the company they both worked for.
Overtime, Jim became an unofficial mentor to my friend, and last week, recommended him for a promotion. My friend got the job, and that’s when I received the phone call. My friend was smart, he never used his “in” with Jim to talk about getting a better job or not being very happy at his present position. They just talked like two friends until Jim started asking questions about my friend’s job. And so it all began, networking is a funny thing. My buddy has a new job, and I have a big smile on my face.

I am eagerly awaiting the fall show UP ALL NIGHT, starring Christina Applegate, who can do no wrong when it comes to making me laugh, as a working mom married to stay-at-home dad, Will Arnett. I can only imagine from the previews what hilarity will ensue, yet, I still have the summer to get through. Therefore, to get through the summer, I will take.. baby steps.
Summer, in the entertainment industry, tends to slow everyone down. Most TV shows go on hiatus, executives go on vacations, and people spend weekends at the beach… and yet, there is still work to be done in the form of creating new relationships, re-establishing relationships, and planting the seeds for the next job when the industry picks up again.
So, here are some tips to “baby-step through your summer, in order to have the revitalizing time off you need, while maintaining your business.
1.Create a Target List of 20 shows you want to work on or people with whom you’d like to work. The goal here, is to be clear on what you want in the future not how you’re going to make it happen.
2. Make a commitment to call 1 person Monday through Friday to re-establish your relationship. No matter how busy you are, you can find 15 minutes, once a day to catch up with someone.
3. Go to 1 networking event before September and meet 5 new people.
4. Spend 1 hour a week, researching someone you want to meet/work with.
5. Read 1 book that pertains to the industry. It can be autobiographical, technical, or motivational. (Warning: if you choose to read my book, And…Action! you may be motivated to go beyond baby-steps.
Now go… be like Amy. Baby-step through your summer to maintain momentum.

I haven’t heard much about LinkedIn lately, is it losing its luster? Of the “big three,” how would you rank the importance of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn? Please do answer they all are equal, I would really like to know your opinion. Thank you.
I am very “opinionated” about this one, so no worries about getting “they are all equal from me. LinkedIn, is a business suit, Facebook is business casual and Twitter is a t-shirt and flip flops. They are each used differently.
Linked in is good for connecting through commenting on peoples’ groups and with more “suit wearing” typed people. It is very business oriented. Not very personal.
Facebook (my clear favorite by a landslide) is where you can really get to know people.
By “friending” someone, you can look through their pictures, read their posts, and make comments on their wall. This enables you to identify the people you share common interests with and can potentially build a personal relationship that can turn into a working relationship.
Why? Because people like to work with people they have things in common with. Be sure when friending an industry person you want to get to know, you send your request with a personal note explaining (briefly) why you want to connect. Otherwise, even if you have a friend or two in common, they may thin you’re a hacker.
Twitter, is for sharing information. It is more for marketing purposes to constantly keep your name in front of people. There are many bells and whistles to make this possible that you must be using or you could be wasting your time.
It hasn’t really proven it’s value to me for entertainment professionals, yet. I have clients trying different things on it to see how it could be effective, and other than the big names with the built-in fan base, it hasn’t been helpful. I have quite a few blog entries on social media if you want to check them out.
I’ve just been laid off, but my boss has high hopes of me being rehired in 3 months. I really like where I worked, it was a perfect job for me. How much faith should I put in what the boss told me and how often is it okay to contact him about the status of my position.
No one can tell you how much faith to put in your boss’ hopes. I’m sure your boss has the best of intentions, but only time will tell what’s going to happen in the company. The only way to know how often it is okay to contact him, is to ask. Send an email or make a phone call saying that you are hopeful about his optimism for your return and are respectfully asking how he would like to be followed up with and how often regarding the status of your position.

Canada’s Shaftesbury announced it formed Shaftesbury U.S. concentrating on development for the US market. Beginning this Thursday, Tom Mazza and Maggie Murphy will jointly supervise the new division as Co-Heads. Tom previously worked as President for Columbia TriStar Network Television while Maggie is a former senior development executive. Both Tom and Maggie will report to Christina Jennings, Chairman/CEO, Shaftesbury.
GLR Networks added Pedro Sevcec as Host for a daily news magazine radio show on Radio Caracol Miami. Pedro will also contribute to the network brand Minuto 60.
David Coke appointed SVP/Controller of RHI Entertainment where he will be in charge for the execution of monthly financial and management accounts, budgets and forecasts. David will also be involved with financial controls and processes across the business. Most recently, David was SVP/Finance and Administration for Crunch, LLC.
Collins Avenue, co-owned by Content Media Corp promoted Lindsay Schwartz to Director/Development. Lindsay will work closely with Kamico Drakes and both will report to Mike Aho, VP/Factual. Lindsay comes to Collins Avenue from Lifetime where she was a producer on the docu-series Dance Moms.
Lori Lung takes on the new position as SVP/Finance and Administration with REELZCHANNEL – TV About Movies. In her new role, Lori will manage the strategic planning, financial analysis and reporting in addition to human resource activities.
Greg Osborne was elevated to VP/Network Sales, Western Region with Univision Communications Inc. to lead the company’s national advertising sales efforts on the West Coast and to head a team of sales executives based in California, Arizona and New Mexico. Greg begins his new position September 12 and will continue to be based in Los Angeles reporting jointly to Nick Valls and Laura Molen, SVPs/Network Sales. Greg has been an AE for Univision over the last ten years.
Island Def Jam Music Group restructured its Promotion Department and in so doing announced four executive changes:
- Todd Glassman named to SVP/Promotion based in New York.
- Christine Chiappetta upped to SVP/Rock Promotion based in Los Angeles.
- Noah Sheer becomes VP/Rhythm Promotion based in Los Angeles.
- Mike Chester advances to VP/Pop Promotion based in New York.
London-based international distributor DCD Rights named Michael Jackson as Senior Sales Executive and has elevated Rick Barker to Head/Sales. Michael previously worked at MoMedia where he was involved in sales and acquisitions for Europe. Rick has been with the company since 2006 and in his new capacity will oversee the sales team in addition to managing sales in Australia and New Zealand as well as retaining key European and Nordic regions. Furthermore, Angela Harvey rounds out the sales team working in the area of digital sales as well as non-theatric and airlines.
AETN UK, a joint venture between A+E Networks and BSkyB named Stephen Roberts in the newly-minted role as Head/Programme Scheduling. AETN UK additionally upped several executives in the Commissioning, Acquisitions, Editorial and Compliance and Research. Stephen, reporting to Adam MacDonald, VP/Programming will head a team of ten programme schedulers for all the company’s channels in the UK and Ireland, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Benelux, Scandinavia and Central and Eastern Europe. Other promotions include: Rachel Job to Head/Acquisitions and Commissioning, HISTORY and MILITARY HISTORY; Sarah Proctor joins AETN UK as Acquisitions and Commissioning Editor, HISTORY AND MILITARY HISTORY; Koulla Anastasi promoted to Head/Acquisitions and Commissioning, Crime & Investigation Network and BIO; Jinal Patel is now Acquisitions and Commissioning Senior Editor, Crime & Investigation Network and BIO; Michelle Clarke elevated to Acquisitions and Commissioning Coordinator for all channels; Emma Beaumont promoted to Head/Editorial and Compliance and she manages Sebrina Zeki who was added as Editorial and Compliance Producer and Gareth Moore and Dawn Griffiths, Editorial and Compliance Assistants. Rosie Smyth-Tyrrell heads the Research team as Research Manager which includes Ruth Bonner, Research Executive.
Carlos Baez named as Senior Director/Affiliate Sales with WFN: World Fishing Network. Carlos formerly was with A&E Networks for 15 years most recently as VP/Distribution for all A&E Networks’ standard-def and hi-def services and distribution of content on non-linear platforms. At WFN, Carlos will report to Sean Luxton, SVP/Affiliate and Content Distribution in the network’s Denver office. Carlos will be based in Atlanta.
Bruce Feldman, a veteran journalist and New York Times author was tapped by CBS to cover college football. Previously, Bruce was with ESPN for 17 years. Now at CBS, he will write for CBSSports.com and will report college football for all CBS platforms.
