The Importance of Annual Reports
When looking for information about a company, many people go to Wikipedia and stop. That’s a bad idea. I’m not suggesting anything disparaging about Wiki, it’s just not enough information.
So where should you go for one stop shopping for information about a company? Their annual report.
When I suggest this to clients, the blood almost immediately drains from their faces. When I ask about their reluctance, they say they are not accountants and cannot understand annual reports. When I ask when is the last time they’ve read an annual report, most say never.
So I pull up the latest annual report for Apple, and I show them. Not only does the blood return to their faces, but also a smile.
Why? Read it! Almost at the top of the report is the company’s background and business strategy! Not only their general business strategy, but also their strategy for the consumer, small and mid-sized businesses, education, government and enterprises.
Then the report describes the basic organization of the company, and in Apple’s case, the company is primarily based on a geographic basis. Although it can get a little involved, it also contains some tremendous information.
The annual reports continues to describe many of their products, including some of their software.
Page 6 of the 2011 report details Apple’s markets and distribution and their take on their competition.
Page 8 conveys the foreign and domestic operation and geographic data. Here you will read such gems as approximately 39% of Apple’s net sales come from customers in the US, and that Apple has a manufacturing facility in Ireland (who knew?) along with the ones in Asia.
After that, Apple goes into great detail, ten pages in fact, into the risk factors of the company. This is an incredibly valuable asset for anyone tailoring their resume and cover letter for a specific company, along with an extraordinary advantage during an interview.
After this, call an accountant. But the first twenty pages of their annual report will provide you with more information about the company than any hiring manager can expect you to know. And isn’t that our goal? To exceed their expectations?
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected].

Imagine being upset after being told that you look like your brother’s mom. That’s how Monica Geller until Chandler reassured her that the guy was hammered, “Earlier he thanked me for my very moving performance in Titanic.” That reassurance changed both Monica and Chandler’s life forever, and they went from friends to more than friends, to in love, to married. They never saw it coming.
You never know when you’re going to meet that certain someone who’s going to change your life. In your case, the person who can change your career. In Hollywood, anytime you meet someone it can potentially lead to work. It’s the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon Rule. If the person can’t directly hire you he probably knows someone who can, or knows someone who knows someone who can. And yet, so many people let these magical meetings filled with opportunity slip through their fingertips. Do you? Do you know how to turn a brief encounter with a stranger on line at the check out counter into an opportunity that can lead to work?
Here are some tips that will help:
1. Change your perspective. Many people I’ve worked with over the years have no problem talking to people who have nothing to do with the industry. The moment they meet someone whom they recognize as someone who can potentially hire or help them, they become “shy” or “don’t know what to say.” Changing your perspective means seeing every person as an equal. Yes, some may have had opportunities that make them a Rockstar in your eyes, but they put their pants on one leg at a time just like everybody else. Until you believe that you are worthy of having conversations with any person you meet, you will continue to miss out on opportunities to welcome these amazing people into your life.
2. Practice. Another huge obstacle for people I’ve worked with is that they don’t know what to say. Was “There’s no way you look like Ross’ mom” the most seductive line? Maybe not, but It charmed Monica, that’s for sure. And she wasn’t prepared to meet the man of her dreams that day, especially a man she’d been friends with for years. You can prepare what you will say should you stumble upon an opportunity with someone who would normally leave you tongue tied. The key is you MUST practice if you want to have confidence. In my seminars, I always have the participants practice so they get it in their physiology that they know what to say and feel confident saying it.
3. Make your own luck. How many times have you heard, “I was in the right place at the right time,” and then think to yourself how lucky that person is? Well, that person wouldn’t have been lucky if she was at home sitting on her couch watching TV. You can make your own luck by going to the “right place” and then it will become the “right time.” Think about places where you can meet people who are in the position to hire or help you and then GO!
4. Follow Up. If you do tips 1-3, and meet extraordinary people, and have a great conversation with them, and then let them walk away without any plan to follow up with them and without their contact information, you’ve just come pretty close to creating a situation you’ll regret for the rest of your career. Do you have moments like that already? You met someone early on in your career and didn’t stay in touch and now they’re huge and you’re kicking yourself for not staying in touch. If you do have those moments, great! Then you know you don’t want to have them again. So be sure when you’re talking to new people you meet, you find an authentic reason to tell them you’ll follow up and ask for their contact information.
The number one reason people are out of work is because they don’t know enough people who can hire them. If you fall into this category you must meet new people. If that makes you feel nervous, you now have new ideas for building up your confidence. Like any skill, it takes practice and giving up is not an option.
And Action!
1. Find a friend or two and practice what you’d say to someone during a “chance meeting”
2. Research places that are “the right place” so you can go and make it “the right time”
3. Grow your contact list by 5 people this month
Monica and Chandler’s journey wasn’t smooth sailing, it never is in sitcom land. So don’t expect every encounter to be perfect. Learn from each one and eventually you’ll forget you ever had an obstacle with meeting people.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Jessica Sitomer
What percent of people actually get jobs through the classifieds rather than knowing someone or through a headhunter?
I don’t know the statistics but if I were to give you an estimate based on over 1000 people I’ve coached, I’d break it down like this: classified: 5% headhunters: 10% knowing someone: 85%.
The accuracy of my numbers isn’t what I want you to focus on. What I do what you to focus on is the undeniable results that relationships are your best commodity in the entertainment industry. The more people you are in relationship with, the more people who want to help you, connect you, and hire you. People want to work with people they know, like, and trust.
Put yourself in their shoes: if you had to fill a position would you rather fill it with someone you know/someone who was recommended by someone whose opinion you value, or a headhunter, or a cold resume you received through a classified?
What are the pro’s and cons of going to a head hunter to help in my job search?
The pro is that you have someone else on your team who may have access to getting you into doors you couldn’t get into yourself. The con is, this may make you think you can sit back and wait for the headhunter to get you a job and you will miss out on opportunities that if you had no one on your team you’d be out there pursuing.
The solution? Eliminate the con by pursuing opportunities while working with a headhunter. Usually the company hiring you pays the headhunter so it shouldn’t be a conflict, but always do your due diligence and check your contract just to be sure.
