Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 4, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Helena Bonham Carter will return as villainess Bellatrix Lestrange in Warner Bros.’ movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (HP6).  Bonham Carter joins the Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who have already announced they will appear in both HP6 and HP7.  While not a surprise that Bonham Carter will take up her nasty role again, she is so far the only other major player, outside of the major three, to sign on the dotted line.  Though, my guess, no doubt like yours, is that we will see most of the key players return … okay, let’s hope so.  Warner Bros. will release HP6 on November 21, 2008.

Rocker, actor, model, and New Jerseyite Jon Bon Jovi has picked up the movie rights to Almost Home, a young adult novel by Jessica Blank that is set to be published by Hyperion on October 23, 2007, per Publishers Weekly.  The story revolves around a group of teenagers living on the streets of LA.  Blank is also writing the movie screenplay with her husband Erik Jensen.  Bon Jovi will produce the movie along with Vector Management’s Jack Rovner and Ken Levitan.

France’s Cyber Group Animation is working with Planet Nemo, Canada’s Sardine Productions, and Singapore’s Peach Blossom Media on the preschool-targeted, 3D CGI animated series Manon Queen of Animals (52×7), per World Screen.  Based on Gerard Moncomble and Nadine Rouviere’s French books, the show follows Manon and her funny and sweet adventures with her animal pals.  Manon was commissioned by TiJi (France) and Canada’s Knowledge Network, Radio-Canada, SCN, and TFO channels and is slated to deliver by end of 2008.  Cyber Group Animation will handle series distribution in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and North and South America, while Planet Nemo will oversee Asia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with XM Radio is set to premiere The Big Read on XM, a new 30-minute daily radio show, on September 10 on Sonic Theater.  The first audio book to be featured on the series is Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.  The program will also include readings, interviews and commentary about each featured book by a range of authors, actors, and the like (e.g. Robert Duvall, Alice Walker, Cheech Marin, Mary Louise Parker, Colin Powell etc).  Hosted by Josephine Reed, who also serves as Program Director for Sonic Theater, the show will air Monday-Friday, 2:30a, 10:30a, 4:30p.  The Big Read on XM is based on the NEA’s year-old national reading program of the same name, which aims to bring the reading of books and discussion of them back into fold of American life.  The audio books appear on The Big Read on XM courtesy of Audible, Inc.

For those who have been wondering, and there have been many, BBC One has unveiled plans for the return of Doctor Who for a fifth season.  And to answer the next question, yes.  David Tennant will continue as the good Doctor Who and along with Head Writer Russell T. Davies, when the show returns with two specials, slated for 2009, and season five which will run in 2010.  If that seems a long way off, don’t forget that BBC One will premiere a special episode of Doctor Who this December 2007, starring Tennant and singer Kylie Minogue.  Additionally, the fourth season of Doctor Who will bow in the UK in spring 2008, followed by another special episodes for holiday 2008.

S4C, the Welsh-language channel, will feature a full lineup of 2007 Rugby World Cup coverage, beginning later this week with pre-match build-up and running through the finals in October.  S4C’s 70-hours of Rugby World Cup programming will feature 25 live games (including all games in the Wales’ Group B), highlights, analysis, behind-the-scenes access to the Welsh teams, a new season of Rygbi 100%, the kid’s rugby skills program, as well as quarter and semi final and finals matches.  Additionally, S4C’s website will feature news, updates, results, profiles and blogs and more.

HarperCollins Children’s Books has picked up the worldwide publishing rights to eight books from China’s bestselling kid’s book series, Naughty Ma Xiaotao by Yang Hongying.  HarperCollins will publish the series simultaneously around the world in spring 2008, just as the world prepares for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  Aimed at K7-9, the series revolves around the antics of Chen, a mischievous boy and his eccentric father. Yang Hongying is noted in China for writing several bestselling kid-targeted series, though so far Naughty Ma Xiaotao is her most successful kid’s series to date, having sold 10+ million copies there so far.  The deal was put together by Gillie Russell, Children’s Publishing Director, HCUK, Stella Chou of HC, China and Bai Bing, Editor-in-Chief, Jieli Publishing House.

Childhood obesity numbers have risen consistently over the last 20-years according to The National Center for Health Statistics, which reports 16% of US kids/adolescents were overweight as of 2002.  But, unless you have been asleep the issue isn’t much of a secret.  In a newly released online survey, conducted by Harris Interactive (August 6-8, 2007) for The Wall Street Journal Online’s Health Industry Edition, 84% of US adults believe that it is a “major problem” and 78% of parents of kids 12 and under said the same.  Isn’t that 78% is a little worrisome, all you have to do is open your eyes and look around to see the issue is ubiquitous.  While many have been pegged as the culprits causing childhood obesity, of those surveyed US adults (83%) and parents (85%) stated that it is parents who can have the most impact in diminishing the prevalence of childhood obesity.  That said, versus last year an increasing number of adults are looking at advertising targeted to kids as a significant contributor to the increase of the issue (78% vs. 65%).  There is also an increase this year of +7% over last year in the number of US adults who want the government to take a more active role in regulating the marketing and advertising aimed at kids (60% vs. 53%).  A healthy 94% of parents said that public schools should be doing more to promoted regular exercise, as well as limiting student access to unhealthy foods (88% vs. 83%).  The research, which comes on the heels of a number of media and food/drink companies outlining changes in their marketing to kids, found that adults and parents of kids 12 and under surveyed were in favor of: using kid-friendly characters to endorse healthy foods is a good idea (91%, 92%); are in favor of limiting adds to healthier foods (73%, 75%), and restricting the use of popular characters from TV shows and movie (64%, 63%).  But those same adults and parents don’t believe advertising to kids under 12-years should be prohibited (43%, 45%).
