CBS and Time Warner Cable finally ended their month-long standoff. As of 6pm ET yesterday, CBS and Showtime returned to Time Warner Cable Systems.
Because of the heated debate over the use of force in Syria, CNN is rebooting Crossfire (1982-2005) sooner than expected. A Sunday tweet from @CrossfireCNN announced, “Due to the breaking news with #Syria, Crossfire will now debut one week earlier,” on Monday, September 9 at 6:30p.
Crooner Harry Connick, Jr. landed the open judge’s seat on American Idol, joining Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez. Fox had planned to fill the spot with a hit-making exec, but after music producer Dr. Luke dropped out, the singing competition had to make a quick hire or risk delaying production for season thirteen, premiering Monday, January 15, 2014.
Fox has ordered up a dating competition show from Ryan Seacrest Productions. It’s not the usual fare for the Idol host’s company, better known for docu-reality series like Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Married to Jonas. No premiere date has been set.
It took less than three weeks for Spira Footwear and A&E’s Duck Dynasty to reach their goal of selling $100,000 worth of duck-camouflage-patterned running shoes on crowd-funding platform Rockethub.com. The initiative comes from A&E’s Project Startup, designed to showcase entrepreneurial brands; other companies include Axon Optics and World Housing Solution.
Leah Remini (King of Queens) chose The Ellen DeGeneres Show for her first interview since her much-publicized break from Scientology in July. Also planned for the season eleven opener: “Ellen’s biggest giveaway that will impact a community in need.” Premiere for the Telepictures talker is Monday, September 9.
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) hops across Showtime sitcoms to guest on season three of former Friends (1994-2004) castmate Lisa Kudrow‘s show, Web Therapy. LeBlanc plays a compulsive online gambler. He’s the third Friend, after Courteney Cox (season one), and David Schwimmer (season two), to make an appearance; the first of LeBlanc’s two eps airs tonight at 11p.
Showtime has acquired Made in America, a concert doc from Imagine Entertainment featuring A-list musicians like Jay Z and Pearl Jam. In addition to performances at the Philadelphia festival of the same name, held last year by Jay Z and sponsored by Budweiser, are backstage footage and interviews. Showtime premiere is Friday, October 11.
Tremor Video, a video ad-technology company, has added TV and movie metadata from entertainment info provider TMS to its streaming video ad platform. The integration allows Tremor to pull info on 1.5 million TV shows on 15,000 broadcast and cable line-ups; after consumers enter their zip code, they will get a list of local TV providers, programs and airtimes.
TNT, home to scripted crime series like Rizzoli & Isles, is launching a true crime show tonight. From producer Dick Wolf (Law & Order) and Magical Elves (Top Chef), Cold Justice follows two women, a former prosecutor and a CSI, as they investigate unsolved murder cases. Series premieres at 10p.
Crime drama The Glades won’t make it to season five on A&E. The Fox TV Studios-produced series drew season-high ratings for its finale on August 26, with 3.4 million total viewers, but averaged just 2.5 million over the course of the season.
According to an online survey commissioned by CNBC, a whopping 38% of the business news net’s audience purchased a product or service after viewing it on the network. The CNBC Research Study, conducted by Greenberg Brand Strategy, canvassed more than 500 executives, financial advisors and active investors.

The announcement of who’s competing on season 17 of ABC‘s Dancing With the Stars will be made tomorrow morning on Good Morning America, but Exec Producer Conrad Green has to wait until September 22’s Emmy Awards show to find out whether DWTS will bring home an Outstanding Reality – Competition trophy. What is it about the talent competition that sets it apart? “We try to keep the show classy, funny and dramatic – all in the same episode,” Green tells Cynopsis. DWTS returns Monday, September 16 at 8p.
A&E is bringing back sophomore drama Longmire, after season-high 4.42 million viewers and 1.1 million A18-49 tuned in to the August 26 finale. Second season of the Warner Horizon-Shephard/Robin Co. production averaged 3.7 million viewers and 942,000 A18-49.
The new season four Downton Abbey trailer promises romance and action, albeit scant details. But prepare for spoilers: Once again, while the soapy series debuts in the U.K. this fall, it won’t bow Stateside on PBS until January 5, 2014.
Futuristic thriller Westworld is headed for television. HBO has made a pilot production commitment for the 1973 cult classic, in which Yul Brenner played an android gunslinger, from Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot. A CBS adaptation, Beyond Westworld, lasted three episodes in 1980.
NBC has given a put pilot commitment to a sitcom from writer-producer Justin Spitzer (The Office), at Kapital Entertainment and Universal TV. Series is set in a Detroit auto company.
Elias Koteas (The Killing) has been added to the cast of NBC midseason drama Chicago PD as an undercover detective. The Chicago Fire spinoff, from Wolf Films and Universal Television, also stars Sophia Bush and Patrick Flueger.
Extra is making a move. The entertainment news show from Telepictures Productions will relocate taping from LA’s Grove shopping complex to Universal Studios and CityWalk for its 20th season. Sounds win-win: the Universal properties get a star-studded added attraction, and hosts Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos get a big new playground. Season premieres Monday, September 9.
The Brazilian government wants VOD companies to start paying taxes on the content they distribute online. Local daily Folha de Sao Paulo reported that no new law would be required, just a notification to the companies. And recently, companies like Netflix and Apple were reportedly instructed to register their content.
After two seasons of declining ratings, U.K.’s The X-Factor is headed in the right direction. With format tweaks and the return of Sharon Osbourne to the judging panel, the tenth season premiere drew an average 9.2 million viewers, versus 8.7 million last year.
The most important figure in the U.K. media industry is the digital consumer, according to MediaGuardian‘s 13th annual ranking of the top 100 most powerful people. The selection reflects the influence of online consumers in the surging U.K. digital economy. In second place was Google CEO Larry Page; BBC Director General Lord Hall came in third.

Ratings for NBC’s Big Brother on Thursday night were a below average 1.8/5 share for A18-49 and 5.05 total viewers, thanks to preemptions and delays due to NFL games, but that was still enough to earn the ratings crown. Controversial housemate Aaryn Gries, roundly condemned for racist comments, was voted out.
Telemundo reports it’s the fastest growing network compared to last summer in broadcast A18-49, growing 30 percent (694,000 to 904,000). “We’re extremely proud of our growth among broadcast networks, regardless of language, in the 18-49 demo,” Emilio Romano, President of Telemundo Media, tells Cynopsis.
ESPN scored its second best opening-night ratings since 1998 with a doubleheader of college games on Thursday. Two Southeastern Conference match-ups drew a combined 3.13 million viewers.
Breaking Bad is on a hot streak – its midseason premiere in August drew record ratings with 5.9 million viewers – but Low Winter Sun, the show that follows it on AMC at 10p, isn’t catching fire. The drama drew 2.5 million viewers for its premiere on August 11, per Nielsen, but had dropped to 1.2 million by August 25.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: Univision grabbed the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 1.5/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Univision led the pack with 1.7/6 for Porque el Amor Manda, followed by a .9/3 average for a set of CBS’s Two and a Half Men. CBS’s Big Brother topped the 9p hour with 1.8/5; Univision’s Tempestad came in second with 1.5/5. Univision grabbed the 10p hour with 1.3/4 for Que Bonito Amor, ahead of NBC’s Hollywood Game Night’s 1.0/3.

Adriana Cisneros has been appointed CEO of media company Cisneros, owner of network Venevision. The third generation to lead the Venezuelan company, Cisneros was previously its Vice Chairman and Director of Strategy.
Relativity Media‘s EVP of Development and Series for its RelativityREAL arm, Elizabeth Porter, has left the company. Before joining Relativity in November, Porter was SVP Specials and Talent Development at Comedy Central. No replacement has been named.
British broadcaster David Frost died on Saturday, August 31. He was 74. Best known for his piercing interviews with public figures, including disgraced former president Richard Nixon, Frost hosted a program for news net Al Jazeera English. Frost died aboard the QE2 cruise ship, where he was scheduled to give a talk.
Three-time Emmy-winning art director Charles Lisanby died on August 23, from complications following a fall. He was 89. In 2010, Lisanby was the first production designer to be inducted into the Television Academy’s Hall of Fame.
Talent agent/manager J.J. Harris died on August 30. She was 62. Over the years Harris represented numerous stars, including Kevin Costner, Charlize Theron and Drew Barrymore. Until recently, she ran One Talent Management.
