Good morning, it’s Tuesday, September 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The browser wars are heating up again. Google is launching a new open-source browser called Chrome in about 100 countries later today, designed as a streamlined platform to display web pages and run popular Google applications. (Click here to check out a comic book that spells out its features.) Chrome seems to borrow bits and pieces from other popular browsers including tab buttons enabling you to switch back and forth between open windows (a la Firefox,) and web apps that can be launched in their own browser window without an address or toolbar. Other handy features include an “incognito”” privacy mode allowing users to cover their tracks from subsequent users (known as InPrivate in the newest Internet Explorer browser.)
Hulu unveils its Fall TV Premiere Line-up today featuring full episode streaming of a number of new shows such as Knight Rider, Lipstick Jungle and Chuck and Life a week before they premiere on air. (Clicking on the link prematurely will bring up season one of The Fall Guy – check back later if that’s what you get.)
YouTube added the option for producers to overlay captions in written text format. They can be used to add subtitles to foreign language video, provide clarification for hard-to-understand dialogue bits or include written descriptions of music or other elements within the video.
Long form web TV show The B-Cast (which makes a home on Federated Media’s Breitbart.tv portal) will be broadcasting live from the Republican National Convention this week showcasing the new RayV livecasting platform. The B-Cast, which streams daily at 4 pm M-F ET, is co-hosted by Breitbart.tv editors Scott Baker and Liz Stephans and produced by Hot Metal Media.
Online music retailer Napster hired UBS to once again explore a possible sale.
The busy bees at Google have also unveiled plans to set up their own app store for Android compatible handsets, scheduled for release the day the first “G-Phones” from T-Mobile hit the market. Unlike Apple’s App Store – which developers are kicked off of fairly regularly for copyright violations or for otherwise upsetting the Apple cart – the Android Market promises to be completely user driven, open source and open access. A blog post from the Android Mobile Platform team says Google will provide developers with a useful dashboard and analytics tools to help them track and monetize their apps.
Not to be outdone, it seems Microsoft is also working on its own app store for phones that run on the Windows Mobile operating system, according to company job posting sourced by AppleInsider. “Skymarket” is slated for release in late 2009, given the dozens of handsets and devices it would have to integrate with.
Text messaging was the preferred medium of communications for AT&T Wireless customers during the DNC last week, according to the company with more than 244 million messages being sent – a 48% increase in activity compared to the prior week. Other findings include:
- There was a 57% weekly increase in wireless calls over the AT&T network
- AT&T experienced a 21% text messaging traffic spike inside the Pepsi Center, Invesco Field and immediate surrounding areas on Thursday compared to an average day
- AT&T saw a 101% increase in call volume during the convention compared with the 2007 World Series traffic in Denver
San Francisco-based Social networking company Meez upped former Senior Software Engineer Keith Neal to CTO and former Director of Product Management Jean Neather to VP/Product Management. Both will report to John Cahill, President of Meez.
With nearly 20 minutes of the story now up online, NBC.com’s Gemini Division is beginning to take shape. Produced by Electric Farm’s Brent Friedman and Stan Rogow (creators of Afterworld,) the show could offer intriguing glimpses into how the multiplatform web format will develop. First, the star system is alive and well on the web. Rosario Dawson is reason enough to tune in: not only is she easy on the eyes, but she’s also pretty convincing as she slips through the rabbit hole of her adventure. GD features a page-clicking plot that always ends with a cliffhanger. (The story seems far-fetched at times, but it’s early.) Getting viewers to come back to NBC.com or their Xbox Live Marketplace portal for 50 short episodes means pulling out all the Saturday morning serial tricks. And the producers are getting a lot of mileage out their $2 million budget with creative use of the green screen, mixing and matching settings and special effects without breaking the bank. Finally Gemini Division is designed to solve the How to Make Money in Web Video dilemma by baking in tons of organic product placement opportunities for advertisers. Because it’s a Sci-Fi tale set in the near future, technology sponsors have any number of options. For instance, the first person webcam-style narrative (popularized by LG15) is actually delivered through Rosario’s smartphone. Yet aside from charter advertisers such as Intel and Microsoft (featured in overlays and pre-rolls), so far sponsors don’t seem to be biting at these opportunities. It will be interesting to see if more will jump on board as the story progresses.
