Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 27, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
How to Tell Your Boss That They are Wrong.
It is a difficult situation when you are certain that your boss has made a mistake. Before you do anything about it, determine what kind of impact this mistake will have on the company. If it’s an error that will cost the company money, you must bring it to his/her attention. If it’s a mistake in policy that may result in grievances being filed or even a lawsuit, again you must tell them. But if it is a mistake that causes no harm, such as a misspelled word in an internal email, there is no reason to bring it up. So pick you battles wisely.
That is the first decision you have to make, whether the problem is important enough to mention. Secondly, are you absolutely sure it is a mistake, and if it is, do you have a reasonable option to correct it. It’s not good enough to tell a superior they are wrong, you have to be ready with a logical solution. Finally, make sure you are doing this for the right reasons, and not because of your ego or desire to one-up your boss.
Once you decide to tell your boss, there are certain courtesies you should follow.
Tell your boss in private. Do not bring up the situation in a staff meeting. Embarrassing the boss in front of other people is a career killer. It is rarely forgotten or forgiven.
Make sure you act without emotion and always with respect. This is not a schoolyard fight, it is a discussion between two mature professionals. Make sure it stays that way.
Approach the situation as if you do not understand, rather than the boss being wrong. If there is a way to get your boss to realize his/her mistake by asking a series of questions, then do so. This Socratic method often begins with saying, “I am confused, can you explain this to me.” Direct your questions so they will realize the error they have made. The more you know of the situation, the easier it becomes.
Try avoiding the word, “wrong.” You could initially place the blame on yourself, or suggest a misunderstanding. But flat out telling your boss they are wrong, may make them defensive.
After all this, if your boss refuses to consider anything else, but you know he/she is wrong, and if the problem is serious enough, you should consider putting your concerns in writing and sending them to your boss. The document must be written in a respectful way, but also clearly identify your concerns and how you tried to correct the situation. Be discreet, make sure none of your colleagues reads the document.

Imagine being a model like Deb, in a world where perfection is so important, dying in a car crash, and waking up as Jane, a smart, overweight lawyer, who in a “Perfectionist’s” eyes would be viewed as a “work-in-progress.”
There are so many “perfection blocks” in our industry. Actors who won’t meet casting directors until they have the “perfect” headshot, wasting months deciding which of their shots could be THE ONE. Writers who re-write and re-write and re-write, until they see “their show” on TV, written by someone with a similar idea. And then there are people whose perfectionism with their reels, resumes, portfolios, networking or interview skills, keeps them stuck. I write a book on all of the opportunities clients passed up because of procrastination in the name of perfection.
Lately, I’ve been speaking with lots of people who say that they can’t take action because… “I have to get ______ done first.”
Don’t get me wrong, I believe in preparation, and I also believe there is such a thing as being too prepared. Being too prepared is when you have enough to handle yourself professionally, but fear is stopping you from taking action, so you convince yourself “it” has to be perfect.
Things don’t have to be perfect. You’re never going to be 100% ready. IS AN ARTIST’S WORK EVER REALLY DONE?
So, let go of the need for perfection, and GO FOR IT! Move forward on what you really want! See what happens, what will develop, because ACTION ALWAYS LEADS TO SOMETHING…
Start by making a list of all of your current ongoing projects; mentor requests, reels, class/equipment studies, editing a project, pursuing your career, writing a script, starting a new business/project, etc.
Write down “why” it’s not or you are not ready. What more needs to be “perfect”?
Take one action to move you forward despite the lack of perfection.
TRY IT! I know it’s a different way of doing things, but it just might be fun! It’s called flying by the seat of your pants. Kind of like waking up in someone else’s body and having to figure out your life.

The company I work for is currently being bought out by a competitor, which most likely will mean massive layoffs for many of my former colleagues, as well as staff I hired and developed during my tenure.
The problem I am having, is deciding whether I should write a recommendation on LinkedIn for one of my former staff, who I would NOT hire again, based on his/her conduct toward the end of my employment as their boss and subsequently after when I returned to consult on a project. I know that this person spoke poorly of me as their former boss, questioning why I didn’t promote them while working there. I also have witnessed this person having temper tantrums, disconnects with others and delivering poor final product. How do I politely turn down this person’s request, without completely drawing a line in the sand between us? Do I confront them and honestly tell them I don’t feel comfortable in recommending them, after hearing and experiencing their poor performance and personality issues?
This is one of those terribly uncomfortable situations where the goal (to politely turn down this person’s request, without completely drawing a line in the sand between us) is nearly unobtainable. By saying no, the person will want to know ‘why?’ and some line in the sand will be drawn. By saying no, the person will feel rejected.
According to your question, this person spoke poorly about you the last time a decision you made was not to his/her liking. So, what to do? This may be a situation of less is more.
When someone makes a business request, your response is either yes, no, or giving them a counter offer. For example: “Thank you for your request, I must decline. However, if I do see job leads that I think are a good fit for you I will pass them on.” This is a counter offer. You are saying no to the original request of a recommendation, and giving them a counter that implies possibility. It softens the “no”.
In my experience, people who speak poorly of former bosses don’t typically have positive responses to honesty about performance and personality issues. Ultimately, the decision is yours as to how you want to handle it. You must feel integrity with your decision.
I have two facebook accounts, one for my private life and one for my professional life. I do not allow these two to intertwine. But I have a good friend who wants to join my professional account, and when I told him it was just for the professional side of my life, he took offense. He claimed that I thought him untrustworthy enough to ban from my professional account in fears that he will embarrass me. I don’t think he will, but I do want to keep the two separate. How can I explain this to him if he doesn’t already understand?
This sounds like insecurity on his part. If you don’t think he would embarrass you, why does he think you think that? His issue. Stand strong, explain that you in no way think he will embarrass you, it’s simply a matter of boundaries, that you want to keep the two completely separate.
He has nothing to do with your business and it would be out of integrity for you and your professional friends to accept him on that page. Furthermore, accepting him could potentially open a big can of worms with other personal friends saying, “You invited him, why can’t I be invited?”
Tell him this is a professional boundary you will not cross, and you appreciate his understanding. If he persists you can ask him why it’s so important to him if he can’t let the situation go.
Ask him what his personal motives are for being on your professional page. What would his purpose be for being there? If he gives you a solid answer that has to do with your knowledge, you can offer that as a friend, you’d be happy to share your expertise with him in another way. If he doesn’t have a legitimate reason, you can say that it sounds like he’s testing your friendship and you don’ appreciate him playing games when it comes to your business.
You can tell him that you feel you are a good friend to him and if this is enough to affect your friendship, then perhaps he’s not the friend you thought he was.

As of this Friday, NBC News’ Lester Holt will begin a new assignment as Principal Anchor of Dateline NBC. Holt will anchor the newsmagazine program in addition to reporting as a correspondent for NBC News. ION Media Networks appointed Steve Sternberg as SVP/Sales Research. Former White House Secretary, Ari Fleischer joins CNN as a Contributor working with the network’s team of political contributors in anticipation of the 2012 election season. Ari will contribute to various programs across CNN in addition to special political programming.
Mike Zarrilli was hired by The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) in the newly-created role as VP/International. Mike will head the overall strategy and oversight of The Weather Channel’s international digital businesses, concentrating on Western Europe, Asia and Latin America. He reports to Cameron Clayton, EVP/Digital Productions, TWCC.
Carole Smith takes on a new position with WE tv as VP/Research, joining from Current TV in the same capacity. Based in New York City, Carole reports to Tom Ziangas, SVP/Research, AMC Networks.

44 Blue Productions hired Arielle Worona as Manager/Development. Arielle will pinpoint ways to help 44 Blue expand its slate into new genres including docu-series, formats and first-run syndicated strips.
Starting in October, Emilio Romano will be the new President of Telemundo announced NBCUniversal. Emilio will oversee the broadcast network as well as its 14 owned stations in addition to the Entertainment Division and Telemundo Studios. Furthermore, Emilio will head the company’s News and Sports units, Telemundo International, Telemundo’s Digital Media group and the network sales and marketing areas. mun2, the lifestyle cable network aiming at young bicultural Latinos will also fall under Emilio’s domain.
Also in October, Paul O’Hanlon will become Managing Director/Asia with FremantleMedia up from Executive Producer/Production and Development with FremantleMedia Australia. In his new capacity, Paul will oversee the production operations of FremantleMedia in Asia, reporting to Ian Hogg, CEO Asia Pacific. Paul will be based in Singapore.

Former Fox Business Network Executive Producer, Terry Baker joins Current TV as SVP/Production. This is a newly-created position based in New York City with Terry reporting to David Bohrman, President, Current TV.
Trisha Cardoso becomes EVP/Corporate Communications with Showtime Networks Inc., the company’s top communications position. Trisha will have responsibility over Showtime Networks’ programming publicity, media and talent relations, events, corporate branding and public relations. She will additionally be the company’s chief press officer in charge of all corporate and business press outreach as well as the Showtime communications contact with parent company, CBS Corporation. TV One tagged Tonia Lee as VP/Business Operations and Strategy to manage daily operations and strategic planning for the network. Paul Rehrig was hired by AMC Networks Inc. in the role as SVP/Business Development. Univision Communications Inc. tapped David Neal as SVP/Production for Sports where he will supervise production for Univision’s sports properties across all platforms. Based in Miami, David will report to Alexander “Sandy” Brown, President/Sports, Univision Communications Inc. In the recent past, David was Executive Producer at NBC Sports.
