A new season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta opens on Bravo November 6 at 10p from True Entertainment. The highest-rated city in the Real Housewives franchise follows the ventures and personal lives of six socialites from Atlanta.
From Nielsen, the number of US Asian TV households will increase by 9.6% during the 2011-2012 TV season representing over 400,000 homes compared to last year. In addition, Hispanic or Latino households will see a 4.6% bump (over 600,000 homes).
Broadcast sales media professional, Marisol Oller died this past weekend. Ms. Oller held various positions within the industry over the last 20 years, most recently as Director/Sales at Ovation TV. Her previous positions included VP/Sponsorship Sales at Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, AE at Univision/TeleFutura Networks and as SVP/Advertising Sales at Fox Family Worldwide (now ABC Family). According to her many friends and admirers, Marisol’s track record is one of being diplomatic and well-liked by both clients and co-workers, while also being aggressive and unrelenting in the pursuit of business. She was an excellent writer and articulate communicator and presenter, and certainly will be missed greatly.
London-based Content Digital, a division of Content Media Corporation, with offices in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto has picked up the action thriller The Millionaire Tour from US independent studio Vuguru and is presenting the 90-minute feature at MIPCOM.
Creator, producer and distributor Shaftesbury is taking two new documentary projects to MIPCOM. The one-hour documentaries are Who’s Sorry Now? and Why Men Cheat which will both air on CBC’s DocZone in Canada. Who’s Sorry Now? is currently in post-production and will premiere on CBC in February 2012 and Why Men Cheat will commence production early next year for a planned airdate later in 2012.
US distributor, The Television Syndication Company (TVS) is bringing several new shows to MIPCOM:
- Baldo is based on the comic strip with 13 half-hour eps in both English and Spanish.
- Playing Through is a reality sports show with 13 half-hour eps being offered as a format and/or presell.
- Ammo & Attitude is a women’s hunting competition show that has aired in the US on VERSUS for two seasons.
- Sports Safaris is a sports adventure series with 13 half-hour eps.
- Rounding out the offerings is a one-hour surfing documentary 80 Waves.
This weekend, LATV Networks is launching new seasons of its nationally syndicated half-hour series, American Latino TV and LatiNation. This new season of American Latino, hosted by Valery Ortiz also marks the 10th anniversary of the show in national syndication. LatiNation, going into its eighth season, will feature Los Angeles-based pop star T. Lopez as co-host along with show staple Jose Mangin based in New York. Both shows will feature fresh sets for their new seasons. American Latino TV is debuting in 101 markets equal to more than 83% of Hispanic homes and 72 million total TV homes. LatiNation is in 86 markets, reaching more than 80% of Hispanic homes and 64 million total homes.
Director Lee Daniels (Precious) sold a script based on the 1967 theatrical adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s Valley of the Dolls novel to NBC. 20th Century Fox Television and Chernin Entertainment are producing with Daniels set to write and direct and serve as executive producer along with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope. In the past there were two other Valley of the Dolls TV adaptations, a miniseries in 1981 and a primetime soap that lasted one season in 1994.
A legal drama titled Legacy makes its way to CBS from Jericho co-creator Jon Steinberg who is partnering with author James Frey and DreamWorks Television. The project has a large penalty attached and is produced by CBS TV Studios. The plot is about a one-term president who, after not winning his re-election campaign, returns to his hometown law firm where he can cheery pick the cases that really matter to him. The idea for Legacy was conceived by Frey’s Full FathomFive book production company. CBS TV Studios is also on board to produce.
FOX has picked up two new projects:
- After a bidding war ensued, FOX was the victor handing a pilot production commitment to a single-camera comedy called The Goodwin Games from How I Met Your Mother’s Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris. The comedy is about three siblings who reunite following the death of their father. 20th Century Fox Television is producing with Bays and Thomas as writers, co-creators and executive producers along with executive producer Harris.
- FOX is working with Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle) on an original one-hour drama thriller project that has received a put pilot commitment. The project will be produced by Williamson’s Outerbanks Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and is about a serial killer who uses technology to create a cult of serial killers and a FBI agent finds himself in the middle of it. Williamson will write and serve as executive producer.
Kate Burton, known for her role as Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) mother on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy landed the role of Vice President of the US on the midseason drama Scandal from Shonda Rhimes. Burton joins Jeff Perry on Scandal who played Meredith’s father on Grey’s Anatomy as well as series star Kerry Washington. Scandal is slated to premiere in late February or early March 2012 on ABC.
Casting Call: Oxygen is launching its national casting search for the next season of The Glee Project with an online search for those who want to win a spot on FOX’s Glee. Interested hopefuls can visit http://thegleeproject.oxygen.com to find out more about the casting process. In November, Oxygen will begin a multi-city open casting call tour going to New York, Chicago and Nashville. The second season of The Glee Project is looking for talented young men and women with strong vocal, acting and dancing skills who have big personalities. Musical theater experience is a plus though not required. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and convincingly be able to play the role of a teenager and be legally eligible to work in the US. Candidates must also be available for a production schedule from January through April 2012 and be willing to travel for the production. The Glee Project is produced by Ryan Murphy Television and Embassy Row.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: CBS and Univision tied for #1 Friday at 1.8/6 apiece among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, tried and true Teresa on Univision won the hour at 2.1/7 followed by the season premiere of Kitchen Nightmares on FOX at 1.6/6 then the series launch of A Gifted Man on CBS was third at 1.4/5. The CW also debuted a sophomore season of Nikita at 8p which delivered a sixth place showing at 0.6/2. During 9p, a three-way tie happened between the season bows of CBS’ CSI: NY and NBC’s Dateline as well as Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino at 1.8/6 each with the season opener of FOX’s Fringe in #2 at 1.5/5, ABC’s repeat of Revenge at 1.1/3 came in third place and the season debut of The CW’s Supernatural in fourth at 0.8/3. NBC’s Dateline season premiere claimed first place at 10p with a 2.3/7 followed by the second season opener of Blue Bloods on CBS at 2.0/6. Also in the 10p hour, TeleFutura premiered Correo de Inocentes with a 0.2/1.

Former Cox Media Group executive David Shipps takes on the new role as SVP/Business and Alternative Revenue Development with The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC). David, in this newly-minted role will manage all facets of domestic and international business development activities in addition to seeking new revenue streams on all consumer platforms and devices. David will report to Jennifer Dangar, EVP/Distribution, Business Development and Marketing, TWCC.
Loren Ruch gains a new position at HGTV as VP/Programming, Partnerships and Special Projects. Loren will become the lead programming contact working closely with various internal departments in addition to third parties to implement media and ad sales partnerships. Loren is based at HGTV’s New York office.
Fox Networks (FN) Distribution announced a reorganization of its operations tapping EVP Michael Biard for added distribution responsibilities for all linear and non-linear platforms and SVP/Advanced Services Julie Simon will now report to him. Michael reports to Mike Hopkins, President. Furthermore, former Lifetime Networks executive Steve Carcano joins FN as SVP/National Accounts where he also reports to Michael Biard and Kris Nielsen-Refs, coming from Turner Broadcasting in Atlanta was hired as VP/Digital Distribution, reporting to Julie Simon.
