09/25/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 25, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Resumes are a part of an elimination process, not the hiring process. The hiring process begins with interviews, resumes and cover letters are used to eliminate people, unless the company is a Mom & Pop.
The profile statement, the first thing after your contact information, should answer the question posed by the classified for the job. The profile statement should leave no doubt in the reader’s mind that you are qualified for this particular position. A profile statement should be no longer than three short sentences, preferably less. The profile statement must also include key words that are industry specific that were used within the classified ad.
After the profile statement you should have 3 quantifiable (if possible), bullet pointed statements in bold that back up your profile statement. No explanations afterwards, just three statements. As you write these statements, understand they may be the only thing on your resume that the HR department will read, so make them great.
After that, write about your work experience in greater detail. Just make sure that the format is consistent and easy to read.
One of the most important things I tell my clients is have a friend read your resume. After twenty seconds, pull the resume out of their hands and ask them what they remember. If it isn’t what you hoped for, rewrite the resume. Twenty seconds is about the most any company is going to spend on the first round of resumes.
Causes for instant elimination, a screwy email address, spelling or obvious grammatical errors, a hard to read format, lengthy passages or a resume longer than two pages unless it is a C level position.
Unless the job is a creative one, stick with thick stock white or off white paper and black ink. We read about gimmick resumes working in the news, because it happens so rarely.
Never include a photo unless required.
Have a friend read the resume out loud to you. We often skip over our own mistakes.
There will probably be a lot of people going for the same job, most of the resumes will not look like the one I’ve described here. Follow these rules and you will have an advantage.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected].

How to Build Emotional Intelligence for Career Success
by Gena Yuvette Davis, MBA, BCC
As I continue to coach corporate women in the entertainment business, I find a recurring theme that has even shown up in my own career as an executive: being able to control your emotions. Have you ever been described as “having an angry tone of voice” or “having a bad attitude,” or called “hard-core” or “unapproachable”? I know that I have been associated with these words many times over my career and quite frankly, it has been disturbing I know that I am serious and passionate about my work and I can be a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to some things, but I don’t think having an “edge” in how I approach my work warrants these labels. Men are not labeled that way!
However, as you work to build your personal brand for success, you have to remember it is all about perception. Perception is reality and how others feel about your approach is what is most important if you want to advance. This is where emotional intelligence comes in.
“All learning has an emotional base.”
–Plato
What is emotional intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ depending on who you talk to) is the ability to perceive, identify, control, manage and evaluate your emotions. It’s about understanding and connecting with your own emotional tendencies as well as understanding and connecting with others in ways that are most beneficial. Although there are many different models to look at as it relates to emotional intelligence, the mixed model, first introduced by psychologist Daniel Goleman, focuses on four basic tenets and skill sets that you should master in order to be successful in your career or business:
- Self-Awareness – The ability to recognize your own emotions and how they affect your thoughts and behavior. Being self-aware gives you the ability to use your intuition as a guiding force in your decisions which can dramatically boost your self confidence.
- Self-management – The ability to control your impulsive feelings and behaviors. Self-management is also having the ability to be self-disciplined, manage your emotions effectively, take initiative, follow through on commitments, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Social awareness – The ability to understand the emotions, needs, and concerns of other people, pick up on emotional cues, feel comfortable socially, and recognize the power dynamics in a group or organization.
- Relationship management – The ability to develop and maintain good relationships, communicate clearly, inspire and influence others, work well on a team, and manage conflict.
You can improve in these areas of emotional intelligence. It just takes time and patience. Here are 4 simple ways to improve your emotional intelligence:
1) Get to know yourself. Spend time thinking about where your emotions come from and why. Get clear about what motivates you, what you do well and how you connect with others. Emotions serve a specific purpose because they are reactions to what is going on in the world around us. Know what your triggers are and why you have them. I like to journal, meditate and spend time “getting to know” my emotions and understanding what makes me tick.
2) Slow down. This is a hard one for me because I am intuitive – I have a tendency to act quickly and occasionally be reactive. It is important to remember that it is not always about you. Take time to think about situations and look at alternative explanations. My mother often says, “Things are not always the way they appear.”
3) Connect with others. According to published reports, 55% of communication is non-verbal. We move at such a fast pace and are so focused on what we need to do that sometimes we forget about the needs of other people. It is important that we take the time to tune into what others might be thinking and feeling about a situation and have the ability to adjust ourselves accordingly. You can practice this skill in any social situation – when you are networking, working with your peers or in meetings.
4) Give cupcakes! We all know that having and maintaining good relationships is the key to career success. I love empowering and inspiring others to be their best selves through coaching, mentoring and training. Use your talents and skills to share, motivate and give back to your teams in positive ways.
Although I still believe that there is nothing wrong with having a little “edge,” I have also learned the truth of the saying “You can catch more flies with honey…”. Everyone can learn to understand, improve and build their emotional intelligence. Get clear on your goals and objectives; take assessments to determine your level of emotional intelligence if you don’t know what it is; and start taking small steps to improve. Once you begin to master the four areas stated above, you will notice a huge shift in your relationships, your approach to work and your productivity. I know I have!

Does it reflect poorly on the job seeker if they apply for several positions within a single company, even if they’re genuinely interested and have the qualifications for both?
It is perfectly fine to apply for two or more different positions if you feel that you are truly qualified just so long as the positions in question are at similar levels. For example, if you are apply for two different VP roles within a company or you apply for a Director role and a Senior Manager role. However, if you apply for a VP role, a Director role and a Senior Manager role within the same company, it might be perceived that you are just trying to get a job and are applying for any and everything. It may not look very well to recruiters and hiring managers. You want to stay as close to your career level as possible.
Does ‘Teach For America’ mean anything on a resume in the media industry? While I know completing a 2-year Teach For America commitment is prestigious to graduate schools, does it have any value in the media world? I’m currently finishing up my first year as a Teach For America corps member and I don’t know if I’d like to complete my 2-year commitment for a variety of reasons. I know this can be looked at in a negative light in other professional fields, but how do you think this will impact my job search in the media industry?
It is perfectly fine to discuss your experience at Teach for America; especially if your experience at that organization relates to the media in some way. Since you didn’t say what your role within the organization was, answer these questions: Did you handle media relations for the organization? Did you work for a Teach for America newsletter or in-house radio station? It may not be relevant in the media industry if there is no related industry experience associated. Relevance is key!
