Cynopsis: Sports
09/25/12

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 25, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Not even TV’s biggest night could top an NFL game, even with questionable officiating. The Ravens victory over the Patriots delivered a 14.3 overnight rating to NBC on Sunday night, according to Nielsen. With more than 21 million fans tuning in to the game, those numbers easily best early numbers for the Emmys, which drew a total of 14.39 million viewers. In other Sunday games, CBS’s doubleheader saw early game coverage averaging an 11.4 overnight score, up 20% over year ago numbers. The late game delivered a 14.9, off 6% year-to-year. FOX’s single game coverage pulled a 12.2 for the network, slipping 2% versus the comparable game in 2011.

On Saturday, Notre Dame took a college football heavy night, as the Irish’s victory over Michigan handed the channel with a 4.0 overnight score on NBC, according to Nielsen. The game outdrew an ACC battle featuring Clemson and Florida St. on ABC (3.2), Kansas St./Oklahoma on FOX (1.7) on the broadcast channels, as well as LSU/Auburn with a 2.4 on ESPN.

Looking ahead, CBS Sports announced that its SEC on CBS football game on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 3:30p would feature LSU/Florida. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the contest, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Gainesville.

HBO Sports reports that the company scored 475,000 PPV buys for the Sept. 15 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr./Sergio Martinez middleweight prizefight from Las Vegas. The card drew around $25 million in domestic revenue and marked the first major pay-per-view appearance for both fighters.

ESPN reports that only six cities will be considered for the site of the college football national title game on Jan. 12, 2015. Among the sites will be the four current BCS bowls — the Fiesta in Glendale, Ariz., Orange in Miami, Sugar in New Orleans and Rose in Pasadena, Calif.  as well as the Cotton (Arlington, Texas) and Chick-fil-A (Atlanta) bowls. A final decision is expected to be revealed early next year.

This year’s programming will once again include both the men’s and women’s defending NCAA National Champions. The night begins with an in-depth look at Indiana with a Hoosiers’ practice live and in full with commentary from college basketball analysts Jay Williams and Dan Dakich.
