09.24.13

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Turner Sports revealed its lineup for the MLB Postseason, confirming that Pedro Martinez has signed on as a studio analyst where he will join Keith Olbermann and MLB Insider Tom Verducci in the studio throughout the Postseason. In addition, Dirk Hayhurst is on board to provide commentary and insights during TBS’ studio coverage along with contributions to Bleacher Report. In the broadcast booth will be Ernie Johnson, Ron Darling, and Cal Ripken throughout the postseason, including the NLCS. Play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson will be joined in the booth by John Smoltz and Joe Simpson; Dick Stockton will provide play-by-play with analyst Bob Brenly; and Don Orsillo joins Dennis Eckersley and analyst Buck Martinez behind the microphone. The action begins Oct. 1 with the National League Wild Card Game.

On the Air

Despite stiff competition from the Emmys, NBC’s Sunday Night Football game between the Chicago Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers drew 18.7 million viewers, according to early numbers from Nielsen. That’s good enough to take the night and drew a 6.9 rating among adults 18-49 off pace by 7% from numbers a week ago.

TNT NBA analyst Shaquille O’Neal is reportedly taking a piece of the Sacramento Kings as minority owner. Under new team owner Vivek Ranadive, the franchise is looking to turn around a downward cycle, that includes being named “the worst franchise in sports” by ESPN The Magazine. Shaq will continue to work TNT games, according to SI, despite the new title.

Speaking of the NBA, tonight at 10p, NBA TV will showcase a special edition of Hardwood Classics: Lakers/Celtics, NBA Finals Game 4. The telecast will feature pop-up video elements with interesting facts and other fun nuggets associated with the game.

FOX Sports announced college football matchups slated for FOX and FOX Sports 1 on Saturday, Oct. 5, anchored by TCU/Oklahoma on FOX Sports at 7p. Gus Johnson, analyst Charles Davis and sideline reporter Kristina Pink call the action. FOX Sports 1 starts games a noon with Texas Tech/Kansas, Washington State/Cal at 4p and West Virginia/Baylor at 8p.

CBS Radio, the Brooklyn Nets, and Barclays Center are teaming up to bolster coverage of the team on WFAN Sports Radio 66AM and 101.9 FM. The deal will not only see the stations become the flagship home of the team with pre- and post-game shows, it will also see coverage of select college basketball games under the Brooklyn Hoops presented by Ticketmaster franchise, and select Brooklyn Boxing, powered by Golden Boy Promotions bouts, as well as the creation of first-class concert events, and exposure of the arena to audiences across the country.

Five straight victories by Oracle Team USA in the America’s Cup finals have pushed the event to Race 17, which will air today at 4p on NBCSN. Emirates Team New Zealand still leads the regatta by a score of 8-6 and is still one victory away from winning the event, although Team USA can clinch by taking the final three races to mark the greatest comeback in the history of the 162-year event.

The season finale of Golf Channel’s In Play with Jimmy Roberts runs tonight at 10:30p. The finale will see a one-on-one interview with President George W. Bush as well as a sit down interview with Michael J. Fox on the set of his new NBC sitcom.

Sponsorship & Promotion

ESPN is linking up with the MAGNA Consortium, a group looking to utilize data and technology to unlock “the true power of all media,” and will contribute to the Consortium’s efforts to test new standards to drive efficiency and automation across all media transactions. Other members include AOL; A+E Networks; Cablevision; Clear Channel; and Tribune, with the group announcing their goal to automate the process of purchasing commercials by allowing ad buyers to view available advertising inventory and choosing the best slots for their clients.

ESPN also launched a new campaign to push SportsCenter dubbed DaDaDaDaDaDa. The campaign will hone in on the famed tune with the 60-second launch spot featuring a range of athletes who call out their favorite “DaDaDa” moments.

As part of The Home Depot’s sponsorship of ESPN College GameDay, marketing agency CSE launched a “Bucket U” microsite HDGameDay.com designed to aggregate content using the hashtag #HDGameDay. As the season unfolds, consumers will be encouraged to use the actual THD Buckets in their own photos to appear on the site. Fans that use the #HDGameday hashtag along with their tailgating, photobombing or drumming shots, will be entered for a chance to win signed merchandise from the College GameDay Talent team.

Digital & Technology

The UFC inked a deal with Bent Pixels to assist with content rights management. The agreement will see the company monitor the high volume of new UFC video content being uploaded to YouTube every day to help tackle copyright infringement issues.

FOX Sports is bringing back the popular Hagerty Fantasy Bid Game as part of its live Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event & Auction coverage. The game starts Thursday at 5p as National Geographic, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2 combine for 22 hours of coverage. The game allows audiences to place digital “bids” on selected vehicles before they cross the auction block. The contestant that gets closest to the final gaveled price without going over wins that round. Prizes are awarded throughout the contest, as points are assigned to each bid based on proximity.

Roster Moves

AFL franchise LA KISS co-owners Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Doc McGhee and Brett Bouchy are bringing in sports and entertainment veteran Schuyler Hoversten to serve as team president. Prior to joining the LA KISS, Hoversten oversaw the business development for the Los Angeles Dodgers for four years and was tasked with increasing the team’s revenue streams.

WFN: World Fishing Network, named 18-year industry veteran Neil Brubaker as Senior Director, Affiliate Sales. Brubaker joins WFN from ESPN.

The Main Event

Can Team USA complete the historic comeback? America’s Cup finals on NBCSN at 4p.
