Showtime announced renewals of two original comedy series, Weeds and a sophomore season of The Big C. Weeds is expected to have 13 new episodes while The Big C was given an order for 13 episodes. Both series premiere in 2011. The Big C is from Sony Pictures Television and Weeds is produced by Lionsgate.
OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network will roll out the new competition series Your OWN Show: Oprah’s Search For The Next TV Star in January. From executive producer Mark Burnett, the national search to find television’s next big star will be co-hosted by entertainment journalist Nancy O’Dell and stylist/TV personality Carson Kressley. The show will follow ten finalists, who were sifted out of more than 15,000 applicants, as they compete in various challenges pertaining to hosting and developing a television show. The winner will receive their own talk show to air on OWN.
ABC gave its future reality series Obese a second season order and a new title, reports Variety. Obese, now called Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, was given an order for six additional one-hour episodes from 3Ball Productions. Production on the new second season will begin soon with an expected premiere in 2011-2012. Season one of Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition is completing its production and will premiere midseason, likely in March. The show follows severely obese individuals over a year period as they work to lose around half of their body weight. Trainer Chris Powell is the coach for the individuals as he moves into their homes to work with them directly.
TeleFutura Network has set the premiere date for its latest novela, India for October 5 at 10p. India is about the forbidden love between two people from different cultural backgrounds and traditions. India, filmed in locations throughout India, Dubai and Brazil, will air Monday-Friday at 10p.
Comedy Central debuts the new half-hour weekly sketch sries Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time on October 12 at 10p. The seven-episode series takes viewers through stand-up comedian Swardson’s zany world of make-believe. The show is co-created by Swardson and Tom Gianas, who directs and co-writes the series. Swardson, Gianas and Doug Robinson are executive producing with Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and Culver Entertainment.
VH1 is getting into the dance competition genre with a new original weekly, multi-platform show, Dance Cam Slam beginning October 26 at 10p. Marianela will host the eight-episode 30m show where contestants participate in three rounds, competing via their home web cam for a weekly $5,000 prize. The first two rounds will watch as contestants dance simultaneously to the same pop song on their home web cams. Judges will score the performances and name a winner. The third and final round pools the winner’s from the night’s first two rounds against the previous week’s winner. Contestants will appear in individual windows on a giant video screen in the network’s Los Angeles-based studio. Viewers at home can also weigh in by voting live at DanceCam.VH1.com and by text messaging at VH1 Mobile to name which finalist will win the $5,000 cash prize and return to compete again the next week. Dance Cam Slam is produced by Eyeboogie Inc.
CBS will air the People’s Choice Awards live from the Nokia Theater on January 5 at 9p with Mark Burnett as executive producer and Queen Latifah as host. Beginning yesterday, fans now have the chance to vote online at www.PeoplesChoice.com/pca/categories on 15 new categories and those with the most votes will be added to the mix for the 2011 show.
FUEL TV, part of FOX Sports Media Group, announced it is redefining its focus to broaden its target audience. FUEL TV will continue to program shows reaching the young male demo of 12-24 years though now will enhance its programming lineup to include shows to attract males 12-34 years. The network is also introducing a new tagline: Risk is the only rule. The new fall season of FUEL brings back new seasons of several shows and debuts three new ones. New shows consist of:
- Crusty’s Dirt Demons on October 7
- An original sketch comedy series called Cubed on October 11
- SLAM! on December 15
- FUEL TV’s primetime show The Daily Habit will re-launch on October 18 featuring a panel-talk format featuring sports and entertainment celebrities discussing anything current in the world of pop culture.
- Returning shows with debut dates on FUEL TV include: Built to Shred on September 26 at 1030p; The Adventures of Danny & The Dingo and The Standard Snowboard Show on November 16; Props on November 20; Thrillbillies on December 1; and Bubba’s World on December 2.
VERSUS adds two half-hour NASCAR shows to its weekly lineup starting this Wednesday at 7p airing back-to-back. Quest for the NASCAR Sprint Cup opens a second season on VERSUS airing each week through the ending of the 2010 NASCAR playoff season. This show will be followed by NASCAR-Next Generation, a five-part series which chronicles the challenging process of becoming a future star in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Both shows are produced by NASCAR Media Group.
Advertising sales representation company, Petry Television was named the exclusive national advertising sales rep for KUBE-TV/DT, an independent station in the Houston market. KUBE is owned by TTBG, LLC and managed by Titan Broadcast Management.

ABC gave a pilot commitment to a 1960s period drama Pan Am about the former airliner Pan Am and the glamorous lifestyles led by pilots and flight attendants. Sony Pictures Television is on board to produce with Jack Orman as writer and Thomas Schlamme as director. The concept for the proposed series came from producer Nancy Ganis who was a Pan Am flight attendant 30 years ago. The drama will be set in New York where Pan Am had a major hub and the plot will involve the flight attendants and their secrets. Ganis, Orman and Schlamme will executive produce and Sid Ganis will be co-executive producer.
Showtime is close to handing a pilot order for a drama/thriller titled Homeland from the producers of 24. Homeland from Fox 21 is based on the Israeli format Prisoners of War and the US version will center on the discovery of a US soldier who was presumed killed in Iraq 10 years ago. The soldier returns home amid questions about whether he was really a wartime POW or secretly a member of a terrorist organization. Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa (24) will executive produce the project. Homeland is the first project chosen by entertainment president David Nevins who recently took over the position following Robert Greenblatt’s departure.
Syfy is developing a drama script Metadocs based on the comic book series from Antarctic Press created by Joe Dunn and Rod Espinoza and controlled by Platinum Studios. Universal Cable Productions and FremantleMedia will co-produce the project along with Landscape Films and Platinum Studios. Michael Chernuchin is writing the script. Metadocs is about a team of specialists who are treating a small group of the world’s population who have become afflicted with extraordinary abilities.
Production has begun on a fifth season of Bump!, the gay and lesbian travel series produced by Bumper 2 Bumper Media, a joint venture of Peace Point Entertainment Group and Pink Triangle Press. Production on the 23 new 30m episodes will carry through next February and Logo will debut the new season in spring 2011 and Canada’s OUTtv will premiere the series in fall 2011. Bump! features a new gay-friendly destination along with gay human interest stories in each episode presented by new co-host Deb Pearce and co-host Charlie David who has been with the show for all four seasons. Deb and Charlie will travel to such domestic destinations as Boston, Palm Springs and San Diego as well as journey internationally to Costa Rica, Liverpool, Dublin, Peru and more.
Food Network commences production October 11 for a second season renewal of Aarti Party, starring Aarti Sequeira the 2010 winner of The Next Food Network Star. Thirteen new episodes will be produced in Los Angeles and are scheduled to premiere on Food Network in December. In the new season, Sequeria will share new ways to add Indian influences to American favorites. The season one finale will air this Sunday at 12p.
VERSUS added Molly Qerim to the cast of its nightly program, The Daily Line airing at 11p. Qerim’s appearances on the show began last night. She will also take on additional, yet-to-be-announced on-air roles at VERSUS. Qerim also is part of CBS College Sports, serving as a college football studio anchor.
Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks will next appear on the second season of ABC’s Shark Tank. Cuban will be one of the regular panelists who judge pitches from small business owners. Shark Tank is from Mark Burnett Productions and Sony Pictures Television.
Callie Thorne (Rescue Me) was tagged for the lead role on USA Network’s pilot Necessary Roughness. The pilot is inspired by a true story about a female psychiatrist (Thorne) who becomes the therapist for a professional football team. The therapist becomes so successful she takes on other top-name celebrities as clients. Thorne’s hiring lifts the cast contingency on the project.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV held its Friday night lead with a 1.6/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV won the 8p hour with Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.6/7 followed by NBC’s Dateline at 1.2/5. UNIV also claimed the 9p hour with Soy Tu Duena at 2.2/8 with NBC once again in second place with Dateline at 1.6/5. ABC took over at 10p with a new season of 20/20 at 1.9/7 with CBS’ Flashpoint next at 1.1/4.

Discovery Communications named Gabriel Sauerhoff as VP/Digital Media Distribution. Gabriel will create and implement distribution strategies for Discovery’s digital assets including mobile, online and other emerging platforms. Gabriel will additionally be in charge of strengthening existing partnerships and spurring new business as well as negotiating agreements with digital distributors. In his new role, Gabriel will report to Rebecca Glashow, SVP/Digital Media Distribution. In his last position, Gabriel was Senior Director/Digital Video Distribution at Disney and ESPN Media Networks.
Sean Reis is the new Senior Producer for CBS News’ The Early Show, effective immediately. Since 2000, Sean has been a producer and a fill-in supervising producer at NBC’s The Today Show also serving as Matt Lauer’s anchor-producer.
National Geographic Kids Entertainment recently hired Debbie Back as Head/Worldwide Sales to lead global sales. Debbie was previously with Handmade Kids. Jennifer Liang, also formerly with Handmade Kids was added as Senior Director/Sales and Strategy and will work in tandem with Debbie to negotiate domestic and international program sales for National Geographic Kids Entertainment. Jennifer will further supervise all financial areas of the National Geographic Kids division. Both Debbie and Jennifer will be based in New York with Debbie reporting to David Beal, President, National Geographic Entertainment and Jennifer reporting to Debbie Back.
Jonathan Karl was tapped as Senior Political Correspondent for ABC News. Jonathan will cover Capitol Hill as well as the nation’s politics for all ABC broadcasts and platforms.
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) promoted three in its US advertiser sales division:
- Mark Donohue will now be SVP/US Digital Advertiser Sales heading the sales efforts and partnerships with advertisers aimed at SPT’s digital properties including Crackle.com and Sony PlayStation. Mark reports to Amy Carney, President/US Advertiser Sales, SPT.
- Paul Brennan was moved up to SVP/US Advertiser Sales with SPT. Paul will be involved with the launch of SPT’s cable ventures such as 3D television network, a joint venture between Sony, Discovery Communications and IMAX; the linear channel FEARnet from SPT, Lionsgate and Comcast; and Sony Pictures’ new hi-def movie channel. Paul reports to Stuart Zimmerman, EVP/US Advertiser Sales, SPT.
- Maria Dreyer advanced to VP/US Advertiser Sales where she will negotiate and sell broadcast commercial time for programs like Seinfeld and The King of Queens in addition to integration sales initiatives for syndicated series including The Nate Berkus Show among others. Maria also reports to Stuart Zimmerman.
