Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 20, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! 

A Lesson in Grammer

First of all, unless you’re referring to Frasier, it’s grammar, not grammer.

Here are some of the most common mistakes made in resumes and cover letters.

Less versus Fewer.

Rule of thumb, if you can count the items, use fewer.  If it is a mass noun, something you cannot count individually, use less.   Don’t know if it’s a mass noun or not, if you can make it plural, then it usually is not.

Exceptions: Use the word less when describing distance, time or money.

Common misuse:  Grocery stores- Express lane, 10 Items or Less.  Should be fewer and we know this because items can be counted and made plural.

Affect versus Effect.

Affect means to influence and usually used as a verb.  Affect can also refer to acting in a way you don’t really feel.

Effect is a result, normally a noun.

Exceptions:  Effect can be used as a verb, and this is where is gets confusing.  If you mean to bring about or to accomplish, effect should be used rather than affect.  This is where most people get tripped up.  It is easy to confuse trying to influence something or someone (affect) with trying to bring about something, (effect).

More arcane but still useful; affect can be used as a noun when discussing psychology. “The patient displayed a disagreeable affect.”

Who versus Whom.

Who refers to the subject of the sentence, whom to the object of the sentence.  What if you can’t tell the difference?  If you can substitute he or she, use who.  Use whom when you can substitute with her or him. 

Which versus That.

In a sentence, which generally has a common before it, that doesn’t.  Furthermore, only use that when you have to.  Most writers use it much more than it is required.

Further versus Farther.

Farther is a physical distance, further is not.  When the distinction is not clear, most experts agree that the terms are interchangeable. 

Ending a sentence with a preposition.

Despite what your grammar school teacher taught you, it is fine to end a sentence with a preposition.  There is no rule against it.  Just make sure it is needed.

Overusing That.

The most overused word in the English language.  Whenever you are moved to use the word “that”, ask yourself if the sentence still makes complete sense without it.  If so, it’s not needed and shouldn’t be used.

i.e versus e.g.

I.e. means in other words, e.g. means for example.  Just ask Chili Palmer, he knows.

One last rule for today, it is okay to start a sentence with the word “however” just make sure it has a comma after it.

What To Do If You Are On The Wrong Career Track

Are you wondering whether the job you are in is the right one?  Are you climbing the ladder of promotion and going through the motions but wondering what happens when you reach the top? Is the ladder leaning against the right wall?

It is easy to question whether you are on the right path, but not always so easy to identify what the right path might be. The search for inspiration can be an exhilarating one.  I recommend it.

Start with friends and colleagues.  Ask them what they do, what keeps them up at night, what a typical day is like, what they are proud of.  Be constantly making yourself notice what potentially is exciting to you.

Read magazines to see what is going on that you may not have been aware of.  Read Fast Company, Wired, Inc. for example.  I like to read them on paper, putting those little arrow stickies on the edge of pages where there is something that catches my fancy so I can come back to it.  But you can also do this online with the same mags and TED Talks and the almost infinite number of industry blogs. 

There are many ways of tagging things online that strike you; I have recently been trying Evernote, which lets me capture and store all sorts of references including my own voice and access them later on my various devices.

Go to networking events  and not just ones that are specific to your industry.  Ask your new acquaintances the same questions you’ve been asking your friends.  You will be amazed how many employers and lines of work you’ve never heard of.

Use the tidbits you’ve picked up to provoke conversations asking perhaps if they know anything about this thing you just read in Wired. Be open to delving into things that seem even just a bit interesting.  The way the media business is going, everything is a part of it  so it can only make you smarter. 

Make this an ongoing project.  It will energize you.  It will expand your horizons.  It will lead you to interesting people and experiences and it will inform your search for the right wall to prop your next ladder against.  Bon voyage.

Is it really important to put professional advancement or interests on your resume?     If so, should it be detailed or brief so you can talk to it in the interview?

The purpose of your resume is to get you the interview, so if your professional advancement activities are of good quality and relevant to the position, then you should absolutely include them. The knowledge that you are keen enough to improve your skills is a plus to a discriminating hirer and can set you apart. It demonstrates that you are engaged with your own development and the development of her industry.

As for your interests  insofar as they add breadth and color to the picture you are painting of yourself these can be helpful in separating you from the pack of similarly qualified candidates. But your interests must be consistent with the image of yourself that you want to convey. If you are positioned as an effective team leader for example you will not want to mention your macrame or your stamp collection! On the other hand if you are the captain of a racing yacht that could add a very strong credential.

Detailed or brief, you ask. “Brevity is the soul of wit,” they say. Don’t bog it down in too much detail; it’s not your autobiography. It’s the trailer that you are carefully designing to get you the interview.

I see some resume’s with objectives, what is your take on including them or not in a resume? Thank you so much for your help.

A brief opening statement on your resume is most important  but please do not frame it in terms of your objectives. The hirer is not interested in your objectives nearly as much as he is interested in his own. Your resume must persuade him that you are the perfect solution to his problem, not so much that he is the solution to yours.

Express in two or three sentences how you are exactly the right person to fill his position, and let him know of the unique value you will bring to his company. If your opening salvo hits the nail on the head, he will be enticed to read on to the supporting evidence. But remember, he is not approaching your resume with an interest in meeting your objectives  he is completely focused on his own.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Motion picture studio Gaumont, based in Europe, is expanding into global television production and distribution by launching Gaumont International Television (GIT) based in Los Angeles.  Katie O’Connell and Richard Frankie will head the new LA office as CEO and COO respectively.  Erik Pack who is based out of London will manage International Distribution and Co-Production for Gaumont. 

Maura Fried advanced to VP/Sales with Sportsman Channel up from Director/Distribution Strategy.  Maura has been with the network since 2007. 

Canada’s broadcast distribution and production company, Canamedia added Johanna Samuel as VP/International Co-Productions and Acquisitions.  In her newly-created position, Johanna will be based in Toronto. 

Motricity hired several new Sales Directors to its team: Susana Williams in CA; Tawnya Canales in GA; Max Macias in NY; Brett Prescott in NY; and Jennifer Churchill in NY.  Motricity is a provider of mobile marketing and advertising solutions services. 

Lisa Hudson was appointed Executive Producer of the daily, one-hour news program RightThisMinute by Cox Media Group, Raycom and E.W. Scripps Company.  The weekday show premiered on Monday on more than 40 Cox, Scripps and Raycom stations across the country.  Sony Pictures Television is distributing the series.  The three station group owners, Cox Media Group, Raycom Media, Inc. and The E.W. Scripps Company are teaming with MagicDust Television in the creation and ownership of the series. 

Multimedia studio Electus, an operating business of IAC and founded by Ben Silverman is adding Chris Grant as CEO beginning November 1.  In his new position, Chris will manage the company’s next growth phase across worldwide TV, digital and branded entertainment.  Chris will report directly to Ben Silverman who will continue to oversee all facets of Electus.  Furthermore, Drew Buckley, COO will expand his duties taking charge of all operations including digital, advertising, finance, mergers and acquisitions and managing the company’s Yahoo, Microsoft and Google relationships.  Drew will work closely with Chris and will also report to Ben Silverman.

New York-based marketing agency, Campfire elevated Jason Sutterfield to the newly-minted role as COO up from Head/Production, effective immediately.  Jason will now manage all daily operational functions including production, human resources, partnerships, staffing, processes and infrastructure for the agency.

Media services agency, Maxus is experiencing new growth and is establishing new offices in Los Angeles, Toronto and Mexico City.  The new LA office is opening to primarily service the Universal Studios part of the NBCUniversal account which Maxus won in July in addition to NBCU’s Focus Features unit and VOD offering. Pamela Haupert Sullivan will head the LA office as Managing Director, joining from DDB Entertainment.  For the new Toronto office, Maxus has tapped Ann Stewart as President/Maxus Canada.  Ann joins from Excelerator Media, a Toronto-based GroupM agency.  In Mexico City, Maxus appointed Hugo Gomez as CEO/Maxus Mexico joining from GroupM related agency Mindshare Mexico where he served as COO.  Maxus is one of four global WPP media and marketing agency networks within GroupM, along with MEC, MediaCom and Mindshare. 

Eddie Hill was named SVP/Consumer Marketing at BET Networks.  Eddie most recently spearheaded WWE’s consumer marketing activities and in his new position will head all elements of consumer marketing strategies for BET and CENTRIC networks across all platforms.  Based in New York, Eddie reports directly to Vicky Free, EVP/Marketing, BET Networks.  

Former Sony Pictures Television executive Bryan Mu joins NBCUniversal as VP/Program and Primary Research for The Style Network.  Bryan reports to Salaam Coleman Smith, President, The Style Network and to Michael Haggerty, SVP/Research, Bravo and Style Media. 

National Geographic Networks tagged Mike Denby as VP/Eastern Region Ad Sales.  Mike will head the New York-based sales team in charge of both linear and digital sales for National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD.  He reports to Rich Goldfarb, SVP/Media Sales.  For the last eight years, Mike has been with Fox Cables’ FX as AE and most recently as Digital Manager.

Everyday Health, Inc., digital publisher of health information hired Paul Slavin in the new role as SVP/GM, Global News and Everyday Health Studios.  Prior to this appointment, Paul was SVP/New Media at ABC News, a unit of The Walt Disney Co.  At Everyday Health, Paul will report to Goli Sheikholesiami, EVP/Chief Product Officer. 

AMC Networks Inc. hired a slew of new executives for its legal and finance groups related to the company’s recent spin-off from Cablevision Systems Corporation which became effective June 30, 2011.  The new executives consist of:

  • Cliff Bail as SVP/Corporate Legal, reporting to Jamie Gallagher, General Counsel. 
  • Vince Capurso as SVP/Tax, reporting to Sean Sullivan, CFO.
  • James Conboy as SVP/Internal Audit and Sarbanes Oxley Compliance.
  • Joseph Donovan as SVP/Treasurer, reporting to Sean Sullivan, CFO. 
  • John Hsu as SVP/Financial Strategy, reporting to Sean Sullivan, CFO.
  • Anne Kelly as SVP/Corporate Securities and Secretary, reporting to Jamie Gallagher, General Counsel.
  • Antonella Ricciardi as SVP/Controller reporting to John Giraldo, Chief Accounting Officer.
  • Seth Zaslow as SVP/Investor Relations, reporting to Sean Sullivan, CFO.

Steve Pagan joins the research consultancy firm THREE as a Partner.  Steve previously worked for Hall & Partners in New York as a Partner and Division Head. 

Brian Gleason was added at Stephen David Entertainment as CFO to head the company’s financial strategy.  Prior to this appointment, Brian was operations and P&L management at a Fortune 100 company.  In addition, Stephen David Entertainment hired Matthew Fitzgerald as Director/Production to assist with the company’s multiple productions. 

Katz Media Group upped Patrick McGee to VP/Political Sales and Strategy where he will head the company’s political activities for radio in the coming 2012 election year.

Universal Sports named Scott Brown as SVP/General Counsel to manage legal issues encompassing rights acquisitions, network distribution deals, litigation and employment issues.  Based at the company’s Westlake Village, CA offices, Scott will report directly to David Sternberg, Universal Sports CEO.  Scott joins from Fox Cable Networks where he was VP/Business and Legal Affairs. 

Robert Evans is new to Best Boy Entertainment in the role of VP/Distribution, Marketing and Interactive.  Robert heads the company’s global distribution and new media strategy.  Before this new position, Robert was with CBS for 20 years most recently as Sales, Marketing and Operations Manager. 

VEVO tapped Nic Jones as SVP/International to spearhead its global strategy.  Nic, who previously worked for Starcom MediaVest, News Corp, Yahoo! and MSN is based in London. 

Former CBS Television Distribution EVP/Media Sales executive Michael Auerbach joins The Ad Council as EVP/Media.  Michael’s scope includes managing the Ad Council’s Media department involved in securing donated media to support the non-profit organization’s national PSA campaigns. 

Mark Rachesky was tapped as Co-Chairman of the Board at Lionsgate.  Mark owns 37% of the company and he will share the title of Co-Chairman with CEO Jon Feltheimer. 

Current TV appointed Shelley Lewis as EVP/Programming beginning next Monday.  Shelley joins Current TV from PBS where she was Executive Producer on the weekly news magazine Need to Know.  At Current TV, she will report to David Bohrman, President.

Dave Serwatka was elevated to VP/Current and Cross Platform Productions with Bravo Media.  Dave will continue to head the production of many Bravo original series in addition to developing and overseeing production of 360-degree content for Bravo Digital Media. 

ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced Jon Banner, after eight years serving as Executive Producer of ABC World News will take on new oversight as Senior Executive Producer in charge of special division-wide initiatives.  Jon will report to Ben Sherwood.  Furthermore, Michael Corn, who has served as Senior Producer of World News is promoted to Executive Producer for World News with Diane Sawyer

J. John Corbett was hired by Gravity as VFX Supervisory/Design Director based at the company’s New York office.

Effective immediately, Michael Miller was named CMO with the SolutionSet MediaWhiz Partnership.  In his newly-created position, Michael will be based in New York and reports directly to Zain Raj, President/CEO.
