Cynopsis: Sports
09/20/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NBC Sports Group has locked in their broadcast teams for the upcoming NHL season for NBC and VERSUS’ first full season together as sibling channels. The group will once again feature Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick handling play-by-play, Eddie Olczyk as analyst and Pierre McGuire as the ‘Inside the Glass’ analyst as the company’s featured team. The trio will once again cover the ‘NHL Game of the Week’ broadcasts on NBC and will now add VERSUS’ new Wednesday night package to their schedule. Other games will feature Dave Strader paired with Brian Engblom who will primarily handle Tuesday and Sunday night telecasts. Emrick, McGuire and Strader are all calling games exclusively for the NBC Sports Group this season.
In the studio, host Liam McHugh will join analysts Mike Milbury and Keith Jones to begin their second season together on VERSUS’ pre- and post-game show,NHL Live. The channel’s NHL Overtime team will consist of Bill Patrick and analyst Jeremy Roenick.
Football beat the Emmys Sunday night as audiences decided on their viewing priorities. NBC’s SNF game, pitting the Falcons and Eagles, averaged a 15.7 household rating and 25 share, according to Nielsen overnights, for a 3% rise over the week two game last year. Top markets included Atlanta, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Richmond and Norfolk. Other NFL games saw CBS, with the double header this week, drawing a 10.0 score for the Jets blowout victory (down 11% from 2010) and the afternoon game featuring the Patriots and Chargers earning a 15.1, down 10%. Fox’s single-game coverage, led by the Bears/Saints, scored a 13.6 in the overnights, for an 11% rise.
Meanwhile, ABC’s primetime coverage of the Oklahoma/Florida St. game on Saturday gave the network a 6.1 score, up 24% from the timeslot a year ago.
As the NCAA Turns:
- Regents at both Texas and Oklahoma have approved giving their universities respective presidents with the authority to choose a new conference if necessary. Oklahoma president David Boren said the school will either remain in the Big 12 or move to the Pac-12, insisting that conference members share TV revenue equally. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State’s regents have called a meeting to deliver their president with a similar authority on Wednesday.
- Meanwhile, back at the lab, the Associated Press reports that school and conference officials from the raided Big East and Big 12 conferences are discussing ways to merge what’s left of the two leagues if Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12.
- The New York Times featured an interesting piece about the top college football markets in the country, taking into account city size as well as how many people watch the games. The top ten markets in order were: New York, Atlanta, LA, Dallas Ft. Worth, Chicago, Birmingham, Philadelphia, Houston, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Detroit. The story can be found here …http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/19/the-geography-of-college-football-fans-and-realignment-chaos/?src=twrhp
ESPN’s Wednesday Night Baseball is set to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a special telecast pitting the Rangers and Athletics this Wednesday at 10p, featuring regular Wednesday Night Baseball faces Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Gomez joining ESPN Deportes’ Alvaro Martin and Candy Maldonado as well as reporter Jessica Mendoza for the telecast. Tribune highlights will include the use of Spanish-language commentary at select times during the ESPN telecast, Spanish-language graphics when displaying a player’s statistics this season as well as graphics in Spanish, with English translation, when addressing a variety of topics throughout the telecast.
HBO Sports is set to replay the Floyd Mayweather, Jr./Victor Ortiz bout this Saturday 9:45p as well as Sunday morning at 9a.
Comcast SportsNet Washington announced that the channel will broadcast 71 regular season Capitals games this year, telling viewers that if the lockout blanks out the NBA season, all games will run on the primary CSN channel. Otherwise, some contests may be shifted to CSN+ in the area. Joe Beninat and Craig Laughlin will return to call the action along with sideline reporter Al Koken.
TSN is adding to its roster for NHL coverage in Canada, inking Stanley Cup-winning coach Marc Crawford to the broadcast team as an analyst for the upcoming season where he will be featured on the NHL ON TSN panel. Crawford makes his debut tomorrow at 7:30p during the channel’s coverage of the Bruins/Senators preseason game. The company also confirmed that its new regional television channel TSN Jets will now be available in nearly 500,000 homes for the newly-relocated team’s preseason game debut today.
For everyone who hates reality TV, Sunday’s Cowboys game showed an upside. Former Spike TV series 4th and Long winner Jesse Holley, who won a chance to try out for the Dallas team through the series in 2009, caught his first NFL pass on Sunday and later went 77 yards in overtime to help the Cowboys win the game.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, along with AEG Facilities, have renewed their partnership with Target in a three-year naming rights deal that will run through 2014. The extension was designed to allow the parties to “gain a better understanding of the potential for future renovations to Target Center.” Target has been the sole naming-rights holder of Target Center since the building opened in 1990.
In a move to promote the opening of Disney’s film The Muppets this Thanksgiving, Kermit and friends will step into ring on the Oct. 31 episode WWE Raw to tangle with Vince McMahon’s crew. The show will take place in Atlanta.
NASCAR opened their second annual Send Me 2 Vegas sweepstakes yesterday, that will give one racing fan the chance to win a 2012 Ford Explorer XLT SUV as well as two VIP tickets to NASCAR After The Lap, the opportunity to be featured in an on-air promotional spot on GSN, as well as a two-night stay at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Las Vegas. GSN partnered with NASCAR on the promotion as part of the network’s “The World Needs More Winners” branding campaign.
With Fox gearing up for its first UFC fight, the promotion is inviting the public is to attend a “UFC on Fox 1” press conference set to take place in LA today at the W Hotel Hollywood. The event will feature UFC President Dana White as well as UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.
Digital Fields
BTN and CBSSports.com College Network are entering a new partnership designed to create the Big Ten Digital Network, and place the official athletics websites for 11 Big Ten Conference universities, the Big Ten Conference and BTN all under one roof. The redesigned and launched BTN.com will serve as the hub for the new Big Ten Digital Network with the live video section now powered by the CBSSports.com College Network. The partnership is designed to allow greater content sharing, with an emphasis on video, across all of the websites. BTN will also gain additional advertising inventory across the online spectrum and will also provide more than 500 exclusive non-televised events to the services.
