Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Week two of NFL action continued to dominate ratings, although early numbers were off slightly against the first week of action, according to Nielsen fast nationals. NBC’s Sunday Night Football once again took the primetime crown with a delivery of 15.72 million viewers to rank as the top show of the evening. The 49ers blowout was off-pace from a week ago, but still managed to score a 6.5 in the adult 18-49 demo.

On the Air

The ESPN family scored with Saturday’s college football coverage, as ABC’s Notre Dame/Michigan St. game pulled a 3.3 in metered market numbers and won the night in adults 18-49 with a 1.5 score from 8-11p. The network’s California/Ohio St. nail biter delivered a 3.2 to the company, while ESPN’s Florida/Tennessee game also earned a 3.2 household rating in early Nielsen numbers, although the numbers will likely be adjusted when final tallies come out. FOX Sports’ coverage of Stanford’s upset over USC drew a 0.9 in the demo with 2.66 million viewers tuning in. Ratings are expected to be adjusted today.

The ACC and Orange Bowl are reportedly wrapping up a deal that would pit the ACC champion against Notre Dame, an SEC or a Big Ten team starting with the 2014 season in the post-season bowl game, according to ESPN.

FOX Sports Media Group revealed its college football matchups across FOX, FX, FSN & FCS for Saturday, Sept. 29. FOX Sports will carry the Texas/Oklahoma State game in primetime with the FOX College Saturday pregame show, hosted by Erin Andrews with analysts Eddie George and Joey Harrington, beginning coverage at 7p. On FX, doubleheader coverage is set to include Baylor/West Virginia at noon, followed by Arizona St./Cal at 4p

CBS Sports’ SEC pick for that weekend will feature Tennessee/Georgia with coverage beginning at 3:30p. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson will call the contest, along with reporter Tracy Wolfson from Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.

ESPN’s College GameDay hits ACC country this Saturday, ahead of the Clemson/Florida St. showdown. The set will take place on the Langford Green outside of Doak Campbell Stadium on FSU’s campus. The show has visited the Florida State capital eight times before and will air live at 9a on ESPNU before shifting to ESPN at 10a.

FUEL TV is handing programming duties to its audience, at least for a week. The move marks a first for any FOX network, as the channel will offer a special Viewer’s Choice Week from Sept. 24-27. As part of the event, fans pick specific UFC shows they want to see over those four nights by voting for their favorites on the FUEL TV website. The week ends with FUEL TV’s fifth live UFC main card, “UFC ON FUEL TV 5: STRUVE VS MIOCIC” on Saturday, September 29 at 3p.
 
NFL Turning Point returns to NBC Sports Network on Wednesday at 10p with a feature on DeMeco Ryans, who was wired for sound during the Eagles defensive stand against the Ravens. In addition, the series will offer analysis of Alex Smith and his overall growth as an NFL quarterback as well as in-game audio between Philip Rivers and Norv Turner during the Chargers win against the Titans.

Outdoor Channel is promoting an interview with WWE athlete Shawn Michaels and Ted Nugent that will take place on the channel’s Shawn Michaels’ MacMillan River Adventures series tonight at 11:30p. The controversial Nugent will cover “various topics, from his community service efforts for the troops to taking terminally ill and disabled children out on dream hunting trips to his thoughts on preserving the rights of outdoorsmen.”

Veteran New York City broadcaster Michael Kay inked a three-year extension with ESPN New York 98.7 FM. Kay is now in his 11th year with the station, and hosts The Michael Kay Show from 3-7p.

Cena will wear the Special Edition gear through October in honor of breast cancer awareness month. Fans will be able to purchase the merchandise, including co-branded hats, t-shirts, headbands and wristbands, at live events and online and WWE will donate 100% of its profits to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Digital Fields

With no early movement to end the NHL lockout, the NHL Players’ Association is going viral to make its case. The organization launched a YouTube video to foster some public goodwill, utilizing names such as David Backes, Sidney Crosby, Gabriel Landeskog, James Reimer and Jonathan Toews.

IMG nabbed a minority equity stake in Sports New Media, which manages, moderates and monetizes social media on behalf of clients; including athletes, associations and brands. SNM currently reaches over 100 million sports fans across their Facebook pages alone.

HBO offers a new episode of Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel at 10p featuring a profile of Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
