Cynopsis: Kids!

9/18/07

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 18, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Jordan Kerner, and his Kerner Entertainment, has inked a multi-year first look movie deal with Walden Media.  Kerner and Walden Media teamed in 2006 for the Paramount/Nickelodeon Movies feature film Charlotte’s Web.  Kerner was also recently appointed as the new dean of the School of Filmmaking at North Carolina School of the Arts, which is based in Winston-Salem.  Kerner will split his time between Winston-Salem and LA.  Kerner has produced a range of movies including The Mighty Ducks (trilogy), Inspector Gadget, Snow Dogs and Fried Green Tomatoes among others.

David Duchovny has gotten the go-ahead from Cartoon Network to produce a pilot for a live-action series, according to Hollywood Reporter.  Duchovny will head the pilot project with Matt Dearborn (creator, Even Stevens) and Robert Mora (producer Alex Mac, Phil of the Future).  The pilot revolves around a high school kid who launches a city news show using the equipment from the school’s audio-visual club.

Remember the 1980s singing group, The Weather Girls?  Yep, the one with singers Izora Rhodes Armstead and Martha Wash who had a hit with the song It’s Raining Men, which incidentally was written by Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer.  Well, Ottawa-based Boomstone Entertainment Inc., is developing a multi-platform mixed live-action/animated series with Rhodes Armstead’s daughters, Dynelle and Ingrid.  Targeted to Girls 8-15, producer Lee Williams describes says, the program, “will have the flavor and style of the old Josie and the Pussycats, The Osmond’s and The Jackson 5 animated series….”  In addition to being available on TV, mobile, webisodes and the like, there will also be a video-blog where the new Weather Girls, Dynelle and Ingrid, will offer relationship advice to teens.  The Girls will release their North American debut CD soon.

MORE KIDS STUFF

VOOM HD Networks acquires three new kids/family series:

  • Family Room HD picked up the RenegadePress.com (28×30′) from FilmOption International, as well as and Animal Atlas (52×30′) from Midori, which is set to bow on Tuesday, October 2. RenegadePress.com, which debuted on Family Room HD this past Saturday, follows a teen and aboriginal hip-hop artist Jack and his best friend Zoey as they set up and run an underground ezine.  The episodes will feature stories based on teen stories “ripped from the headlines.”
  • Animal Atlas explores everything about animal wildlife, from topics about animal appetites, play and babies to episodes about specific animals.
  • Animania HD channel has picked up the exclusive US HD TV rights for the first season (52 episodes) of the new 3D animated preschool series Katakune from Princ Films, the North American distributor.  Set to premiere during Animania HD’s preschool block this November, Katakune aims to present simple ways for young kids to deal with the complexities of relationships, various life skills and responsibility through stories about a tiny silkworm named Katakune.  Singapore’s Character Farm Pte Ltd produces Katakune.

Decode Entertainment acquires the worldwide TV distribution rights, excluding the US, to the new preschool animated series Super Why (65×22′) from the folk at Out of the Blue Enterprises.  Decode will introduce the property at MIPCOM 2007 next month.  Created by Out of the Blue’s Angela C. Santomero (of Blues Clues fame) and Samantha Freeman, Super Why aims to help kids learn the early fundamentals of reading via interactive adventures.  Launched this fall on PBS in the US and set to air in Canada on CBC, Super Why is a co-venture of Out of the Blue Enterprises and Decode.

In other market news, Decode Entertainment has added Turner Broadcasting’s live-action series My Spy Family (for K6-14), produced by Kindle Entertainment, as well as Poko and Bo on the GO!, from Halifax Films, a division of DHX Media Ltd, and thus Decode’s sister company.

Galleon Entertainment will showcase the first three episodes of its new animated short-form teen-targeted series Apollo’s Pad (26×5) at MIPCOM 2007.  Produced in association with Sony BMG, Apollo’s Pad format takes classic music tracks and adds humor and gag-based comedy, followed by an animated music video in an animated venue, called Apollo’s Pad.  The first episodes features the classic Monkees song I’m a Believer, as well as the hit songs War and Money.  Apollo’s Pad will be available for TV, online, and mobile as well as being on apollospad.com from October 2007.  Brian Rawlings of Metrophonic Studios is producing the music for series.

BRB Internacional, has sold Angus & Cheryl to French public channel France 3.  The channel will air the series (104×2′) both in an open-broadcast format and through its new platforms.

Twitches Too, starring Tia and Tamera Mowry, makes its Canadian TV debut on Family Channel on Friday, October 26 at 7:30p.  A Disney Channel original movie, Twitches Too is a sequel to Twitches (2005), both are based on the books T*Witches (Scholastic).  Twitches Too is also set to premiere on Disney Channel in the US this fall.

CBS is screening its new series Kid Nation for kids, parents and teachers at schools in major markets around the country including Chicago, Boston, Miami, Philadelphia and Denver, per Variety, which points to kids as the target audience for the show.  If the buzz is good from kids/teens who are seeing the show ahead of time, will it make the show a hit?  You know, it just might.  The reality series, which premieres tomorrow evening on CBS, has turned into a quagmire of scruples questions as to whether or not the experience was detrimental to any or all of the 40 kids (ages 8-15) involved, if the production violated child labor and welfare laws in the state of New Mexico, where the series was shot, and so on.  Screening shows/movies for the target audience (read; kids/teens) with others who might be skeptical (read: parents/critics) in the room is not a new tactic, but it is one that has worked.  My prediction is that Wednesday night’s premiere will have big numbers across the board, and if there are good characters and storytelling kids and teens will be back.

Correction: Disney Channel’s sneak peak of Phineas and Ferb on September 28, will be a new episode from the series, and not a repeat of the earlier sneak look.
