Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 17, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Paul Cestari, GM of Veria Living, offers his view on what it really means to be a leader.

What was your 1st leadership position?
My first real leadership position was with Showtime Networks. There, I really learned the value of management skills and building trust within a team. I learned (and not so easily I might add) that just because you are given a leadership role, that does not really mean that you are a leader. A true leader must work with resources available and get the very best possible performance given the circumstances. Of course, a good leader must also find good talent, train them, and cultivate them to be good leaders. However, no matter where you are on that spectrum, you must always remain diligent in driving the business through human resources. And because the resources are indeed human, I also learned that it is important to have your ear trained to focus on real individual needs regarding your staff and their family’s health and wellness needs… a topic that comes up every day for me at Veria Living.

What was one of your first management challenges and how did you handle it?
One of my first challenges was when I had to address performance issues, especially being a new manager myself. Fortunately, I have always been able to keep in the forefront of my mind that every employee is an equal person and always deserves the utmost respect and compassion. That said, it is also my responsibility, as an agent for the organization that I work for, to manage as efficiently as possible. With that in mind, I do not have the luxury of not addressing a performance issue. I realized early on that it truly is more compassionate to deal with it immediately and directly. Some inexperienced managers shy away from this type of feedback, but I have found it best to engage early and often. I believe that, by doing this, it actually gives everyone the very best chance for success. I also believe that by far the majority of people truly want to do a good job. A little redirection in a timely manner actually allows your team to quickly develop and tackle the challenges at hand.

What do you know now about being a leader that you didn’t know early in your career?
I now know that, as a leader in today’s business world, you need to earn the respect of your team. Clearly, respect is not just given. A team that trusts its leader is capable of accomplishing amazing things. Consequently, each member is able to contribute freely and willing to make mistakes knowing that they are working in an environment that is collaborative. On the other hand, earlier in my career, I just expected that my team would trust in me and listen to my direction. The problem with just making that assumption is that you never get to a real level of trust. Accordingly, you might have compliance, but rarely will you have true commitment.

What do you look for in candidates during the interview process?
Obviously, trade skills are required depending on what the role is, but I think one of the most important elements that I look for is drive and initiative. As much as people can learn the skills of a particular job, drive really is an innate thing. As long as someone possesses drive, they can typically learn as they go – encountering and overcoming new circumstances and challenges along the way. People with those talents usually manage things well beyond just simply being directed… they are the ones that take ownership of problems and relish the process of finding and implementing creative solutions.

~EXECUTIVE MOVES~

Burton Jablin has been upped to President of Scripps Networks. He succeeds John Lansing, who is retiring. Kathleen Finch replaces Jablin as President of HGTV and DIY Network; she had been SVP and GM.

The Cartel has tapped Ally Lattman to be its Vice President of Development. Most recently Lattman, who has served at Lionsgate and Universal Television, was VP of TV Development for Piller-Segen-Shepherd.

Jeff Wachtel has been promoted to President and Chief Content Officer at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. He had been Co-president, USA Network and Co-head, Original Content at Universal Cable Productions. Chris McCumber, who had been Co-president of USA with Wachtel, will now serve as its President.

Discovery Communications has upped Rick Holzman to Executive VP of Programming and Strategy for Animal Planet and Science Channel. Holzman had been SVP, Programming and Scheduling.

Frances Berwick, President of Bravo Media, will also take over Oxygen in the wake of Jason Klarman‘s exit.  

Rachel Eggebeen has been hired as Vice President of Development and Production at Fox 21.  Eggebeen had been a development and production exec at Shondaland.

Mark Gordon will head ICM Partners‘ literary department, the agency announced. Partner Gordon takes the reins from board members Kevin Crotty and Chris von Goetz.

Starz announced two promotions: Kevin Cross was bumped to Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, and Todd Hoy was upped to Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs. Cross had been VP; Hoy had served as Senior Counsel.

Gaumont International Television has tapped Sam Semon as Executive Vice President, Business Operations and promoted Elisa Roth to President, Creative/Production. Semon had been VP, Business & Legal Affairs at FremantleMedia North America; Roth had been GIT’s Head of Creative Affairs.

Nicolina O’Rorke has been named Chief Financial Officer for NBC News, and Ali Zelenko joins the division as SVP for Communications. Previously, O’Rorke was CFO for MSNBC and NBC Newsgathering; Zelenko was SVP of Media Relations at Time Inc. The appointments were made by new NBC News president Deborah Turness.

Kevin MacLellan has been promoted to Chairman of NBCUniversal International. MacLellan, who was president of NBCU’s International Television, replaces Jeff Shell, who was promoted to chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

Entertainment studio Electus named Corie Henson Executive VP of Unscripted Programming. Henson previously served as VP of Alternative Series at ABC.

Erin Howard joins production company Big Table Media as VP Development. Howard most recently held the same position at Jupiter Entertainment.

Kevin Beggs jumps from president to chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group. Beggs joined the company in 1998.

TruTV upped Marissa Ronca from VP to Senior VP Development and Programming, and Michael Lanzilotta to Senior VP and GM of the net; Lanzilotta had been its SVP Business Affairs. 

Rebel Entertainment Partners upped Stewart Cavanagh to Vice President of its television department. Before joining Rebel, Cavanagh was at the William Morris Agency.

Leftfield Pictures has hired Jordana Hochman as its new Vice President, Programming. Hochman comes from Oxygen, where she served as VP, current series.

Sony Pictures Television announced a pair of promotions. Scott Landsman was upped to Senior Vice President, Comedy Development, from VP, Comedy Development. He is replaced in the latter position by Lauren Moffat, who had been Director, Comedy Development.

Viacom International Media Networks tapped Chris Shaw to serve as Executive Vice President, Managing Director of ad sales division, Be Viacom. Shaw was previously SVP, global head of advertising for NBCUniversal International Television.

Comcast appointed Ed Brassel Senior Vice President of its Business Intelligence unit. Brassel was SVP of marketing, strategy and business analytics at DirecTV.

Mary Stutts has been appointed to the newly-created position of Regional Vice President of External Affairs for California at Comcast. Previously Stutts was VP of Corporate Communications at Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Canadian cable and mobile phone operator Rogers Communications has tapped Guy Laurence as its new president and CEO, to replace retiring Nadir Mohamed. Laurence was Vodafone U.K.‘s CEO.

Jonas Engwall has been promoted to CEO of newly-formed RTL CBS Asia Entertainment Network from RTL Group and CBS Studios International. Engwall was instrumental in launching RTL’s first channel in India.
