Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
09/13/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, September 13, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Some of you might recall a column I wrote a while back about Marie, a woman stuck in middle management hell at her company. I continued to feel badly for her so I called an old friend, Susan, someone who has been in the industry a long time and has a very distinguished career in broadcasting.
I asked Susan if she would consider being a mentor for Marie or if she knew anyone at Marie’s company that would be a good mentor for her. My friend not only agreed to talk to Marie, but also to set her up with someone within Marie’s company. Perfect.
Perfect until Susan emailed Marie, introduced herself and told her of what she had hoped to do. Marie replied graciously, thanked her, but then made a mistake. A big mistake.
On this first email between the two, Marie told my friend, at great length, of the problems she was having at her company. While I understand Marie’s frustration, the first email is not the time to bring up her difficulties. In fact, Marie shouldn’t bring them up at all until Susan asked.
Susan had to decide whether or not she wanted to get involved by mentoring Marie and helping her with her career. To make this decision, she needs to get to know Marie at her own pace, and through her own methods.
Deciding on being someone’s mentor is a big decision, and, as Susan was going to do, to ask another within Marie’s company to also become her mentor is even a bigger decision. Susan is putting her reputation on the line; will she do this for someone who complains during their first communication? I don’t know, but I don’t think I would.
I really do hope for Marie’s sake Susan understands that she is very frustrated and just needed to vent. Susan is kind and gracious, and I think she will contact Marie again; and I know Marie is too smart to make the same mistake twice.
What we can all learn is that all business relationships need time to mature, and the wrong question asked too quickly, or a negative comment made too soon, can end a very beneficial association.
Next Issue: The Younger Generation
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected] .
Like Rapunzel in the ivory tower throwing down her long braid in hopes of a rescue, does your career feel like you need more than a prince on a white horse to help you out? Having a job these days has become more than a blessing given the alternative. But do you somehow feel that you are sacrificing more than you think?
Feeling trapped in your situation even though you are collecting a paycheck is not any better than not having a job-you’re tangled by your circumstances no matter which side of the braid you are holding.
Giving in or giving up with your career is not uncommon despite the fact that you may be in an enviable position compared to those who are still looking for a job. The fact that you are gainfully employed does not guarantee your happiness no matter how big the paycheck is. Sometimes, we are trapped by our situation thinking we can’t make a change because the title, pay, benefits, corner office is too comfortable a thing to give up.
Knowing that you have options even when you have the benefit of a steady paycheck should be enough to give you hope even when you are not feeling so optimistic. Spending some time, soul-searching what your ideal career means to you is not a waste of time or energy when you feel you are at a crossroads.
So many of us get distracted with the subtle nuances that become the fabric you weave when it comes to your job. Lost in the moment, or many moments, you forget to look at how you got there and if the where is really where you want to be. Looking for a way out of your tangled career because you worry about your income, professional status and the alternatives in your quest for a perfect match.
It’s not like being trapped in a tower is going to keep you safe from yourself or others. It will provide the necessary creature comforts as you yearn for more. Deciding whether it’s time to throw down your braid, anticipating the sense of freedom you desire as you wait for someone to rescue you, or to remain patient, embracing your captivity.
Just because you are working doesn’t mean you should settle with a career that doesn’t quite live up to your initial dream. Getting back to basics and spending time understanding what you like from what you don’t like about your current situation will provide you with a road map where you can begin to plan your escape.
Becoming a prisoner of your own design is not going to make you happy in the long run. Being authentic, honest, truthful and above all respectful with yourself will. Knowing when it’s time to throw out a signal for help will prepare you for your inevitable escape.
Your freedom is in your own hands, and realizing you are the prisoner of your own career destiny may just help set you free. Next time you feel tangled by your career, it’s okay to ask for help, hey if it works for a princess in a tower, it could work for you.

If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
If housing is the first to get hit in a bad economy and discount box and fast food places tend to be the last, where does the entertainment industry fall. More to the point, is there a part of this industry that is more recession proof than others?
This is a difficult question to give a short response to but here goes. I don’t think the entertainment industry is any more or less recession proof than any other industries.
That said, you really need to look more specifically at the supply and demand not of the industry per se but of the particular types of positions that the industry is seeking to employ people.
For instance, technology, financial, accounting and engineering positions tend to be in high demand regardless of a recession. Why? These people need to keep the wheels moving regardless of how fast or slow a train is moving.
The entertainment industry is not recession proof. Many companies go through a series of “down-sizing or right-sizing” when revenue is in jeopardy and things are tight.
Whether it’s a studio concerned with domestic & international box office numbers, or a cable television network fighting for advertising dollars and distribution, to online and digital site seeking audience, traffic and sponsorship dollars, all areas of the “entertainment” business are mindful of cost and labor and how it ultimately effects the bottom line.
So, to answer this question you need to look at the type of jobs that are in high demand and not necessarily a particular industry. This will steer you toward opportunity no matter the state of the economy.
If I’m looking to get out of LA and just cannot afford NYC, but I’m in the television industry, what parts of the country would you suggest? San Fran, Atlanta, something in Florida or perhaps Chicago?
The major markets where jobs seem plentiful within the entertainment industry are most definitely in NY, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, North Carolina, Austin, Orlando, Canada and of course Asia and Europe.
Depending on what type of job you are seeking, a production job, news, television, etc., may also open you up to opportunities in local markets such as the South East, Mid West or Central states.
The key is not to pigeon hole yourself into thinking you can’t afford a city if your dream job is in NY. You can live in the outer more affordable suburbs and commute. Also, don’t discount that there may be a good opportunity in Ohio or West Virginia as well so you should always keep yourself well networked and informed.
If you are looking for production jobs, there are resources out there that can help you find local area jobs where productions are shooting in remote regions. Cast a wide net and be open to a job even if it’s in LA for awhile with a company that might have regional offices-you could get a foot in the door and look to transfer through the company which would be much easier and sometimes more economical (some companies might pay for relocation) so the point is keep your options open and make the most of what you have and be clear on where it is you’d ultimately like to live and target those city & states for available jobs.
Lisa Kaye, Founder & CEO, www.greenlightjobs.com offers up weekly career advice and has extensive experience in hiring, recruiting and talent management in the entertainment industry.
