Cynopsis: Kids!

09/12/06

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 12, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Hachette Filipacchi Media US yesterday launched mobile sites for five of its brands: ELLEgirl.com, ELLE, Premiere, Car and Driver and its new title Shock.  The mobile sites are ad-sales supported and offer free content to users including feature articles, photos, and video clips.  Hachette has tapped Crisp Wireless and Nellymoser two distribute its mobile sites.

Newell Rubbermaid Inc. has sealed a deal to sell its Little Tikes business to MGA Entertainment, Inc. (Bratz).  Though the terms of the deal were not disclosed, Newell reported that Little Tikes contributed about $250 million in revenue in 2005.  Newell’s decision to sell off Little Tykes is the result of the company’s multi-year plan to focus on acquiring and building bigger growth businesses.  The deal is expected to close 4Q 2006, subject of course to the usual regulatory rigmarole.  Founded in 1970, Little Tikes markets and manufactures kid’s toys, furniture and related products including the ever popular Cozy Coupe, which was first introduced in 1979.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

National Geographic Kids Entertainment and King Rollo Films have partnered with the BBC’s CBeebies to co-produce Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies (26×30′ or 52×11′), a mixed live-action/animated preschool series.  Under the co-production deal CBeebies holds the exclusive broadcast rights to the program in the UK and Ireland as well as the license rights for consumer products and home video in these territories.  CBeebies plans to begin airing Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies in fall 2007.  National Geographic Television International (f/k/a Explore International) retains program sales and licensing/home video rights for all remaining worldwide territories.  Part 1 of Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies features a group of baby animal characters is scheduled for release in summer 2007, followed in early 2008 by part 2, and in a double feature part 3 and the Conclusion currently slated for early summer 2008.  Evangelion is an adventure/sci-fi/action story that is not for younger kids.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids debuts new episodes (20 x 30 min) of the preschool animated series Make Way for Noddy beginning this month (check local listings for dates/times).  Produced by Chorion Ltd. in collaboration with SD Entertainment, the series is based on author Enid Blyton’s Noddy in Toyland kid’s books.  The Say it with Noddy segments will feature Noddy learning words/phrases in different languages including French, Spanish, Mandarin, Swahili and Russian.  Additionally, the shows will continue to focus on a range of social skills and concepts such as patience, responsibility, teamwork, respect/confidence, family/friends and embracing diversity, along with counting, telling time and manners.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fineline Holdings Inc. has launched a campaign to ink additional licensing deals with mobile phone providers for its cartoon character groups, for use as screensavers and wallpapers etc.  Fineline’s characters are already seen by 350+ million mobile phone users globally through existing non-exclusive licensing agreements with mobile providers.  Under its worldwide licensing pacts, Fineline earns 15% to 50% of revenue generated from each download (the average cost of a download worldwide is US $1).  Fineline character groups can be seen viewed at http://www.finelineproperties.com .

STONE SOUP

What is the most popular ringtone music genre being downloaded?  Well, in the US this July 2006 the leading ringtone genre was rap/hip-hop, accounting for 23% of ringtone downloads, according to The NPD Group‘s ongoing monthly consumer survey, followed by rock (17%), R&B (13%), pop (11%) and alternative (8%).  Not surprisingly it is the younger demos who were doing most of the downloading for the month, with Teens 13-17 accounting for 26%, and Teens/Young Adults 18-24 chimed in at 22%.  In July more females downloaded ringtones (53%) than males (47%).  NPD’s mobile ringtone purchasing/downloading data is based on 75,000+ online consumer research surveys each month.

The Toy Industry Association will introduce several new areas at the 2007 American International Toy Fair, which will be held February 11-14 in NYC.  Based on input from buyers who attend the annual show, the two new sections will be an Arts and Crafts area that will feature arts & crafts kits and supplies, and a Seasonal Celebrations section that will cater to buyers looking for holiday, party and seasonal products, costumes, decorations and so on.  Additionally, the Toy Fair 2007 will see the launch of Networking Zone, a free online program that will link the wide range of buyers, exhibitors and other attendees with each other based on preferences and product offerings.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Mary Beer has been appointed to the newly created position of Director/Marketing, FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  Beer will oversee the new marketing team and develop and implement strategic plans for the FME division across multiple platforms.  She will be based in London and will report to Dan Allen, COO, FME.  Most recently Beer served as a marketing and strategy consultant for FremantleMedia.  Previously, Beer was Director/Marketing, Flextech Television, and with the merged Telewest/Flextech.
