Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
10/09/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 9, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Cold hard facts about job hunting.
Most jobs are filled by people who know someone within the company or industry; or by a friend of an important person at the company. So network as much and as effectively as you can.
If there are misspelled words on your resume, it will most likely be trashed.
Same with your cover letter and grammar. Grammar is very important in a cover letter because many companies ask for the cover letter for the sole purpose of determining how well you write.
First impressions are a big deal, dress as nice and as professionally as you can.
Your chances of getting an offer will diminish if you are surprised by a question about the company or the industry, study up!
Failing to shake hands or demonstrate common courtesy will hurt you tremendously.
Informal speech, like “Yeah,” will also hurt your chances. Further, chewing gum, cracking knuckles or a cell phone that goes off during the interview will also cause you chances to dwindle.
Not bringing everything they ask you to bring will do enough damage that you won’t be able to recover. So make a check list and always include extra resumes, cover letters and portfolios.
Nervous habits or tics will hurt, video tape yourself going through mock interviews and watch them. Most of us are unaware of our nervous habits.
Almost everyone will be nervous prior to an interview, try to be confident. A certain amount of swagger goes a long way, but be cautious, too much swagger and people will think you’re arrogant.
If you feel like you have no shot, you will always be right. Self doubt is very easy to sense.
Introduce yourself to the receptionist/administrative assistant, and thank them on the way out. Plus, always write or email a thank you note to anyone who interviewed you as soon as you get home. Within the note, mention something about the interview you remember fondly.
There are so many more important tips, if you have any, send them in and we will create and publish a more comprehensive list.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected].

In today’s economy, there are more job seekers applying for each position than ever before. Add the convenience of the Internet, with online job boards announcing an open position to the world and the ease of sending a resume thanks to e-mail, and it’s not uncommon for a hiring manager to receive hundreds of resumes for an opening. For this reason, you need to tailor your resume to the position, to really stand out.
If you have one general resume and are sending it out to for every position you’re interested in, you’re doing yourself a disservice. To understand why, answer these questions:
• What is your resume’s job? To get you an interview!
• Now, who will a hiring manager want to interview? The person with the skills and experience they’re looking for!
If you want your resume to stand out from the dozens of others the hiring manager receives and do its job of getting you that interview make sure you tailor it to the position for which you are applying. The few minutes you spend tailoring now could mean the difference between getting the interview or being filed away in the “circular bin.” Here are some tips on how to customize your resume:
• Read the job description carefully and identify the key skills and experience the employer wants.
• Look for keywords and phrases that are specific to the position the employer will be looking for on your resume.
• Re-word your resume so the skills, experience and keywords you have are there and easy to spot. Remember, with dozens of resumes to review, the hiring manager will just skim your resume to decide if it’s worth further review.
• Put these hot buttons at the beginning of your resume, to ensure the hiring manager sees them. For instance, if you’re a programmer and have the experience with Java the employer wants, but it was in a position two jobs ago, put a “Programming Languages” section at the beginning of your resume, listing Java first with your other languages. This way the hiring manager sees it right off the bat and doesn’t miss it.
In the end, your resume should be so similar to the skills and experience they have in their job description, it would be silly for them not to interview you! This tailoring process may be a bit more time consuming than simply sending a generic resume each and every time, but the result will be landing many more interviews, and that’s the first step in getting the job of your dreams.
Job Coach Joel Garfinkle has over 17 years direct experience in the job search and career transition field. Joel has uncovered the best practices and secrets that can actually help you find a job faster and easier! Whether you are unemployed or employed, this 9-Step Job Search Program will help all job hunters land the best job quickly.
How should I respond when the interviewer asks about salary expectations?
You should have an idea of what the position is worth and your unique value to the company, prior to the interview. However, it does not hurt to hit the salary ball back into the interviewer’s court, at least the first time. Ask what salary range they had in mind for the position, if it hasn’t been listed in the job posting. If they listed a salary range in the posting, and if you’re in agreement with that range, let them know that.
Stating that the salary is a secondary consideration is another way to tactfully dance around the topic. Let the interviewer know that you are more concerned with the opportunity a position offers and that the company is a good fit.
What are some of the biggest mistakes job-seekers make in interviews?
One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make in an interview is being negative about past employers or positions. Even if you used to work for the worst boss in the world, complaining is one of the biggest turn offs to an interviewer. Instead, speak objectively about the position or employer, but turn it into a positive. Even in the worst employment situation, there’s lessons you learned that were valuable and can apply in the future.
Additionally, acting bored or uninterested in the position is a huge mistake. Interviewers want to see enthusiasm. Chances are there are several people interviewing for the same position with similar skill sets. All other things being equal, the candidate who is enthusiastic about the opportunity will typically be the one that gets the offer.
