Nielsen introduced its Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings on Monday, measuring not just posts about shows, but the “audience” of people who see the tweets. According to Nielsen and Twitter, an average of 50 times more people see tweets about TV shows than generate mentions themselves. The new ratings “assist agencies and advertisers in making data-driven media planning and buying decisions,” said the announcement. Twitter filed to go public last week.
Bradley Cooper, star of 2011 Relativity film Limitless, will exec produce a TV adaptation with Relativity Television. It’s just one example of the studio’s multi-platform approach: NatGeo has greenlit its first scripted series, Act of Valor, adapted from the 2012 war film from Relativity. The studio will produce the TV show, with Tandem Communications, starting in early 2014.
National Geographic Channel‘s gritty American Blackout imagines the horror of a national power failure caused by a cyber attack, seen through the eyes of people who film it on their cameras and phones. The two-hour thriller from Raw Television airs Sunday, October 27 at 9p.
The Weinstein Co. is thinking big. Studio’s next project: an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace, with Look Out Point and BBC Worldwide. The six-parter will debut on BBC One in 2015.
Score one for the broadcasters in their ongoing copyright infringement suit against Aereo, which distributes their programming to subscribers without their permission. A ruling by a New York judge suggested statements in Aereo‘s patent application “warrant examination.”
PBS documentary Held Hostage offers an “unprecedented glimpse” of the January 2013 terrorist attack on an Algerian gas facility. The film, produced by Nutopia, premieres Tuesday, October 22 at 9p.
The NAACP Image Awards has found a home on TV One. “Partnering with the NAACP is a game changer for TV One in that it combines the power of two African-American owned and operated entities for a compelling offering,” TV One Chairman and CEO Alfred Liggins tells Cynopsis of the five-year pact.
Joan Rivers settled her dispute with the WGA East over accusations that she violated union rules by writing for E!‘s Fashion Police during its writers’ strike. Rivers agreed not to write during the strike, and to encourage contract negotiations to end the stand-off.
MundoFox and other Fox channels launched a relief campaign for the victims in Mexico of Tropical Storm Manuel and Hurricane Ingrid. In addition to a special that aired October 3, PSAs with stars including Mario Lopez (The X Factor), Cesar Millan (Dog Whisperer) and LA Dodger Adrian Gonzalez are airing on Fox networks to spur public support.
Reelzchannel promises a month “packed with programming” to mark the 50th anniversary in November of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Included is a two-hour docudrama JFK: The Smoking Gun, which presents a new look at the evidence, premiering Sunday, November 3 at 8p.
Discovery helps wannabe tavern owners open set up shop in Bar Hunters. The docu-series from Shooter TV premieres Monday, October 21 at 10p.
Oxygen has picked up 12 episodes of Tattoos After Dark, from 495 Productions, about the night shifts at two LA ink parlors. The net’s tattoo competition, Best Ink, returns for a third season in December.
Bravo is bringing back Newlyweds: The First Year for a sophomore season. The Monkey Kingdom reality series that follows four couples from wedding day to first anniversary averaged 1.3 million total viewers for the net.
Travel Channel announced it’s bringing back Bizarre Foods America and Mysteries at the Museum for their sixth seasons, Dangerous Grounds for season two and Hotel Impossible for a fourth go-round. Series return in first quarter 2014.
Girl Code is back with more questionable tips about womanhood. The MTV series, featuring comics covering topics like boyfriends’ exes and one-night stands, averaged a 1.3 rating P12-34 and 1.2 million viewers L+3 in season one, comes back Tuesday, October 29 at 11p.

TV Land announced a script deal for a workplace comedy about a 30-something woman coping with old-school men and a younger male assistant. Script for the Electus project will be written by Jon Sherman (Frasier).
Travel Channel has greenlit 13 episodes of Chow Masters, a comfort-food competition from Paperny Entertainment.
Italian sitcom An Imperfect Mom has been optioned for remake by ABC Studios. The show debuted in Italy online, then moved to network RAI.
ABC has given a put pilot commitment to a comedy from Kevin Hart, based on his standup material. The project, from 20th Century Fox, won’t star Hart, but the comedian may recur.
Beverly Hills, 90210 stars Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling are reunited in ABC Family pilot Mystery Girls. Garth will also exec produce; Spelling gets story credit on the project, scheduled to shoot in November.
Ashley Madekwe (Revenge) joins Salem, WGN America‘s witch trial drama. The Fox 21 production is scheduled for a spring 2014 launch.
Mexican actress Aracely Arambula will play the lead in Telemundo‘s upcoming telenovela based on Les Miserables. Arambula starred in La Patrona, a hit in the U.S. as well as Mexico.
Alan Klingenstein, Danny Fisher and Jack Fisher announced their new distribution company, FilmRise and their unique methodology for selecting titles. “Our activities begin and end with social media, which is the fuel of the FilmRise Engine,” CEO Fisher tells Cynopsis. “Our acquisitions are evaluated using an algorithm we have developed that monitors what people on the Internet are saying about the films and TV series we are considering.” The company has acquired over 2500 film and TV titles.
WGN America acquired cable syndication rights to CBS crime drama Person of Interest from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, set to premiere in fall 2015. It’s the first time WGN has purchased the exclusive cable window to a syndicated series.
Movies! Network added three new affiliates: Seattle’s KFFV-DT, Providence’s WLWC-DT and Shreveport’s KPXJ, clearing the channel in 40 percent of the country.
Global hit Dragon’s Den (Shark Tank to Statesiders) will extend its reach in Europe. Sony Pictures Television has struck deals with Germany’s Vox and Spain’s TVE for the reality show about competing entrepreneurs.
The Miss Italia beauty pageant, bounced from state net RAI after 25 years, has landed at Italy’s La7. The finals will air Sunday, October 27.

The Simpsons was the top entertainment program Sunday night among A18-49, with a 2.9 rating for Fox, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen. ABC‘s Once Upon a Time scored a solid 2.5 A18-49, just a tenth of a point off its premiere, but Revenge dropped four tenths, to 1.9, as did new drama Betrayal, to 1.1.
HGTV finished the 2012-2013 season as the top ad-supported cable network among affluent women A18-49 and 25-54, reports the net. “The upscale female consumer is an important, strategic target for many advertisers,” SVP of ad sales Donna Stephens tells Cynopsis. “These are households with significant discretionary income and propensity to purchase. They seek information and they find it with HGTV.”
Host/musical guest Miley Cyrus was a ratings draw for Saturday Night Live despite a football delay, matching the 2.7 in A18-49 posted by host Tina Fey for the skit show’s 39th season premiere, according to metered-market households.
MTV snuck an airing of the premiere of new docu-series Big Tips Texas after buzzed-about Miley: The Movement on Wednesday night, and drew 1.0 million total viewers at 11p. That was enough to make it the top program in its timeslot with W12-34, reports the net. Primetime Tips premiere airs Wednesday, October 8 at 10p.

Endemol North America has appointed Cris Abrego and Charlie Corwin Co-chairmen and Co-CEOs of the studio. Both have worked at Endemol since the company acquired 51 Minds from Abrgeo and Original Media from Corwin. David Goldberg is vacating the CEO post.
Arthur Sadoun has been promoted to CEO of Publicis Worldwide, as the company waits for approval of a merger with Omnicom Group. Sadoun will report to Publicis Groupe Chairman-CEO Maurice Levy.
Mark Ambrose has been upped to Vice President of Drama Development and Shari Rosenblum to Vice President of Publicity at 20th Century Fox TV. Ambrose has been it the studio since 2004; Rosenblum since 2000.
James Razzall has been upped to Senior Executive Producer at content marketer Framestore. Razzall had been Executive Producer and Head of Sales.
Pilgrim Studios announced promotions among its senior team: Gretchen Stockdale was named Chief Operating Office & General Counsel, Brian Hunt was promoted to Chief Financial Officer, Johnny Gould was upped to Executive Vice President, Development & Original Programming and Nicholas Caprio was named Executive Vice President, Production & Current Programming.
