I have a friend, his name is Bob. Bob is 81 and he works at my gym. He checks people in, greeting everyone with a smile that only a man who has survived cancer, can smile. That’s how I met Bob, and sometimes we go out for a drink or two. I belong to two gyms, one full of go-getters, music blaring and people working and networking hard. Neon lights fill the ceilings, side by side with brightly painted industrial duct work and vents for the air conditioning. The machines are computerized, new and glossy and there are waitresses, wondering around in spandex, selling mineral and vitamin water, for a mere $6. I joined there to network, to met the movers and shakers of this world. Bob’s gym is different. At fifty years old, I am about the youngest member there. The music is soft, the walls are covered in wood paneling and the computer and printer at the front desk have turned that nasty shade of old, hard margarine. Not much has changed in Bob’s gym in the past thirty years, and the members wouldn’t have it any other way. I play racquetball at Bob’s gym. Bob knows everyone at the gym, and while hanging out at the front desk with him, he tells me about the people who come and go. Most of the people at Bob’s gym own businesses. The man in the worn tee shirt with bologna stains under the arms and shorts that are sitting far too high above his stomach, he owns three businesses, all involving advertising or marketing. The woman in the light blue velour track suit that oddly matches her hair, she owns a PR company with offices in seven states. The man with the ridiculous comb-over, well, he’s just ridiculous. But as Bob is telling me about all these people, a thought finally occurred to me. This is where I should be networking. Sure, at the other gym, I can talk to people who can recommend me for a position, but at Bob’s gym, I talk to people who can hire me. I hate the other gym, spent too much money, don’t really like the people, (their workout clothes cost more than my best suit), and I hate yelling over techno, bass blasting, ear-bleeding music to ask for a towel, though they are great towels. Why am I writing story? Everyone is networking, so you have to be smarter. Are you networking in the right place? I wasn’t. ~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
THE DOG WHISPERER – Sniffing around for jobs in entertainment? by Jessica Sitomer I’m am proud to be one of the few who can say, I was on the Dog Whisperer, and had the pleasure of seeing Cesar Milan work his magic with myself and my English Mastiff. Now all of my dogs can safely go to dog park. Observations from dog park and how it applies to your career:
For you to achieve the same success, you must consciously make an effort to expose yourself to many people and networking opportunities.
At a networking event you want to feel calm, confident, and in control. Like dogs sense a fearful or nervous dog, people sense nervous, desperate, resentful people. Therefore, it’s important for you to work on your state of mind when going out. Leave the realities of life behind and view the networking event as an opportunity where one conversation can change your life forever. That will create excitement, and wonder, two emotions that are very attractive to others.
Enter a room with the excitement of possibility, a smile on your face, and a joyful, happy-go-lucky, attitude. This will create instant rapport when approaching new people. And hey, running excitedly toward someone you already know will make him/her feel special, and cause others to notice you and smile.
Investigate the new people you’re meeting by asking questions that will get them talking about themselves. If you are familiar with their work, show appreciation for it. Licking is definitely out of the questions, however, a firm handshake is advised. Weak or limp handshakes are just creepy and knuckle crushing handshakes are too aggressive. I don’t know why this is still an issue, but it is, so practice your handshake. As Cesar always points out, the problem isn’t usually the dog, it’s your relationship with your dog. Similarly in your career, your results are based on the actions you’re putting into it. Dogs keep it simple when it comes to socialization. There is something to simplicity. Be like a well socialized dog: happy-go-lucky and a joy to be around! Jessica Sitomer,The Greenlight Coach,is a top Entertainment Industry Speaker and Coach and is the author of And…Action! How do I determine when a potential boss is giving his final offer for a salary? Well, that’s the trick isn’t it? I believe in a recent Cynopsis Advantage, there was an article on rapport; matching and mirroring. There is even more to rapport. Developing a keen sense of sensory acuity is one way to determine if someone is telling the truth. Fourmeans of calibrating minute physiological shifts with sensory acuity are: 1. skin color (light to dark) Like I said, you have to be a keen study to use these techniques. You can also do some reading on negotiating techniques. I’ve just been laid off, but my boss has high hopes of me being rehired in 3 months. I really like where I worked, it was a perfect job for me. How much faith should I put in what the boss told me and how often is it okay to contact him about the status of my position. No one can tell you how much faith to put in your boss’ hopes. I’m sure your boss has the best of intentions, but only time will tell what’s going to happen in the company. The only way to know how often it is okay to contact him, is to ask. Send an email or make a phone call saying that you are hopeful about his optimism for your return and are respectfully asking how he would like to be followed up with and how often regarding the status of your position.
