Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
10/04/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 4, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
I have mentioned in the past about my interview for a part-time bartending position with an owner of a restaurant. In preparation, I studied the more obscure drink recipes, the handling of the bottles, the order of the speed racks, and the brand names of all the different types of liquor. I was prepared.
My interview consisted of one question, “What was on the front page of the paper today?” I told him and was hired. Later, as I got to know the owner better, I asked him about the interview. He said he could teach a monkey how to pour a drink, but he couldn’t teach people how to be interesting. He felt if you were current with the news, you were a more interesting person that someone who was not.
I always liked that interview, I thought it was unique and intelligent. But as fond of it as I am, I would not recommend it for any career path jobs. It’s too glib to have your employment decided on matters like these.
I know an interviewer that would ask the interviewee to do the crossword. He had a pen and a pencil on his desk. He would hire the people, not on how well they did the crossword, but by the choice the person made, pen or pencil. If it was a sales job, he wanted someone who would go for the pen, seeing this as the more assertive, bolder choice. If the job involved a lot of detail, he wanted to see the person pick up the pencil, meaning to him, that they were more meticulous.
The interviewer told me this over a couple of beers one night and I replied, “What a bunch of crap!” I was angry. How could this friend be so cavalier with someone’s future. Sure, in a world of 140 characters or less, this may seem like a valid, but more importantly to him, a really cool and clever way to pick an employee. I’m sure there are people who think this man is a genius for coming up with this method, but I don’t.
I think it’s lazy, condescending and far too near-sighted to make any sense. What if a person picked the wrong writing utensil, simply because they preferred the color of it? What if they picked one because it was closer? There are too many reasons why someone may pick one over the other, without it having to do anything with boldness or being detailed oriented.
So here is my advice, if you find yourself in a gimmicky interview, swing it back to why you should get the job. Every time the interviewer throws another curve, get him back on topic. If the interviewer keeps insisting on his gimmicky ways, say how important this job is to you and your family, you don’t want it decided on some trick, but rather on your qualifications, and state them again. Be firm without raising your voice. And then wait. Most of the time, the interviewer will start with more traditional questions, but if he continues with his nonsense, ask for his superior’s name, and if you can talk to them about your concerns about the interview.
Chances are slim you’ll get to talk to anyone else, but you should get the name. Write this person, through snail mail if you don’t have any other contact information, and without emotion, indicate your concerns about the interview.
Will you get the job? Probably not. I can’t say that you’re probably better off, not in this economy. So play the games if you need to, but how dependable is your future at a company that hires people under such conditions?

Don’t Forget the Most Important Step to Finding Employment: Developing a Job-Search Plan
by Joel Garfinkle
One of the most overlooked aspects of the job-search process is planning.
Most job seekers ignore this important step and focus instead on polishing their resumes and sending them to as many prospects as possible. They look at finding employment as a “numbers game.” If they have 100 resumes in circulation, they figure their chances are significantly better than a competitor who has only mailed out 30 or 40.
Having worked as an executive coach and career consultant for more than a decade, I’ve learned that that just isn’t the case.
People who take the time and make the effort to develop a plan will not only find employment faster, but are likely to find a job that is better suited to their needs and career goals.
Here are five steps in building a strong foundation to enhance your job-search efforts:
1. Make a personal commitment.
If you’re unemployed, looking for a job is a full-time job. Make the commitment that you’re willing to invest the time, energy and discipline required.
2. Develop a list of goals.
This should be more than just “I want a job.” Think about what would be your ideal job. What would make you most happy? What industry would you work in? In what city of part of the country would you like to live?
3. Develop a marketing strategy.
Think of yourself as a product and you are the product manager. What is your competitive advantage? Why should someone hire you? What can you offer that others can’t?
4. Focus on your target market.
Develop a list of companies you would like to work for that would be most likely to hire someone with your specific skill set.
5. Do your homework on each target company.
Read their annual reports or news releases. Find out as much as you can about their needs and challenges and how you can position yourself to help them meet their goals.
Once you’ve taken these steps, you can then tailor your resume and cover letter to match the specific needs of the targeted organization.
Joel Garfinkle is a professional motivational and keynote speaker that is recognized as one of the top 50 executive coaches in America. Not your average, motivational speaker, Joel uses his background in executive coaching, performance improvement, and change management to empower associations and corporate audiences to create more fulfilling work and to achieve their full leadership potential.
If you have any specific questions you’d like our Experts to address, please email them to me, John Cox at [email protected].
I was wondering. It seems that every employer is now looking for someone with a Bachelor’s degree. That was never the case before. Can you shed some light on this?!
More Americans are earning Bachelors’ degrees today than ten-fifteen years ago. In fact, there are so many college-educated workers that many employers will require you to have a Bachelor’s degree or they won’t even consider you for a position.
With so many talented, college-educated employees to choose from, it’s wise for employers to look to hire only those with a degree. Employers are always looking for ways to eliminate 90% of the candidates quickly so they can get down to the final 10% which helps with selecting the final candidate. The best way to eliminate a lot of candidates is to make sure they have a degree.
When interviewing for a position, I get uncomfortable when the HR rep asks “Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years?”. I have no idea how to answer this. I do not know what a position leads to. How do I say that I am open minded without seeming unambitious?
For a question like this it’s easy to get off track and talk about things that aren’t relevant. The interviewer wants to know if you have a plan. Make sure you come prepared with specific ideas on the type of plan you have for your own career.
Do you want to advance 2-3 levels? Do you want to manage people? What kind of responsibility would you like to have? Define these questions and you’ll be more prepared when answering this question.
If I am interviewing for a position that is not in my preferred industry do I lie and say I see myself in the industry I am interviewing for? If I am honest, I feel they wouldn’t hire me since I seem I wouldn’t be in it for the long run.
If you are willing to interview for a position that isn’t in your preferred industry, you must be somewhat interested in the job or you wouldn’t be there in the first place. Even if this isn’t your preferred industry, the interviewer doesn’t need to know that. Pursue the job if you’re remotely interested and don’t reveal more than you have to.
Don’t think of the interview process and your answers in the context of how honest you can be. It’s important to omit certain information when it doesn’t benefit you. For example, if you are asked what your GREATEST weakness is, don’t volunteer information that will completely undermine your chances of getting the job.
Instead, select a weakness that doesn’t make you look too bad. Think of the interview as a marketing opportunity. Promote your strongest selling points. When responding to questions, consider how your answer will emphasize your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses or shortcomings.
