A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
THE OC #1 IN THE COMPETITIVE THURSDAY 8PM HOUR THE O.C.
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 4, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Balancing on the primetime bubble is NBC’s Inconceivable, which has yet to set any fires on Fridays at 10p opposite Numb3rs and 20/20. This week the show will be replaced by an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (the same time period where L&O: SVU did so well for a couple of years). For the moment, Inconceivable is due back on the schedule next week. Last Friday, Inconceivable earned a slim 1.5/5 A18-49 (half the share of CBS’ Numb3rs), and down from a 2.2/7 for its premiere. Tonight’s Premieres: * MORE GOOD STUFF *Spike TV has signed on the dotted line for a movie package from Miramax and Dimension Films containing 17 film titles, including Sin City which goes to Spike in 2007. Other titles include Iron Monkey, Mindhunters and Hero, all also making their Spike debut in 2007. All of the films will target the networks core demographic – M1834 and M1849. Verizon FiOS TV launched on September 22 in Keller, Texas, with 330 channels of all-digital programming. FiOS TV has now signed with the Scripps Networks to carry programming content from HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, FINE LIVING, Great American Country and Shop at Home on the FiOS service. Scripps will also provide VOD programming, as well as Scripps’ new hi-def nets, HGTV-HD and Food Network-HD, both scheduled to launch early next year. And finally, the agreement also includes retransmission of the local E.W. Scripps Co.’s ten television stations, all ABC affiliates. MTV and the magazine Seventeen have teamed for a nationwide search for “America’s ultimate role model” in the new reality series Miss Seventeen premiering on Monday, October 17 at 1030p. The would-be role models hail from all areas of the country, all walks of life and varying interests and smarts, and will live together under one roof and compete for the Miss Seventeen title by completing assignments designed to put contestants in real-life situations that could reveal their true selves. What they don’t know is they will be eliminated based on their on-camera performance as well as their behavior when they think they’re off-camera. Court TV will launch its newest Friday afternoon series Cutler & Hayes on October 14 at 430p. Airing weekly, the pair discusses the week’s controversial legal topics. Joining the conversation each week will be journalist Jane Velez Mitchell. Project Runway returns to Bravo on December 7 at 10p with plenty of sponsors in tow: ELLE, L’Oreal Paris, Saturn, TRESemme, Banana Republic and Orbitz. The majority will have fully integrated in-show sponsorships. The winner will get a $100,000 to kick off their own fashion line – that money provided by Saturn, as well as a 2007 Saturn car. The winning design will be photographed for ELLE, and the winner will get a mentorship with the Banana Republic design team. Also returning for Season #2 is host Heidi Klum. For your planning pleasure, please note next year’s NCTA, aka The National Show, will be held in Atlanta from April 9-11 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The event originally had been scheduled for New Orleans, and still plans to return to Louisiana in 2008 (2007 is in Las Vegas). Comedian/actor Nipsey Russell passed away this weekend from cancer at the age of 81. His first appearance in TV was on The Show Goes On in 1949 with his first big television role as Officer Anderson on the 1960s sitcom, Car 54, Where Are You?. He showed up on many talk and game shows including The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, The Tonight Show, Laugh-In and The Jackie Gleason Show in the 1960s and 1970s. You may remember him as the Tin Man in the 1978 musical The Wiz. He also appeared in other films such as Posse, Wildcats and Dream One and on stage in the The Odd Couple, Hello Dolly and others. More recently he appeared on Comedy Central, HBO and BET as well as being a guest on The Conan O’Brien Show and The Chris Rock Show. Carol Lynn Jordan, the longtime managing editor and deputy editor at Multichannel News, died Oct. 1 after a long illness at the age of 49. She is survived by her son Jason, 15, and her brother Harold Jordan. Jordan had been with Reed Business Information since 1989, overseeing Multichannel News and the trade’s Forum guest editorial pages. In 2001 she was upped to Group Deputy Editor for the Television Group, which includes Broadcasting & Cable. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *NBC has ordered a pilot and give scripts for Heist, a comedy/drama from Hypnotic Films. The Heist unfolds over the course of a season as the thieves work on their plan to rob three jewelry stores on Rodeo Drive (think Ocean’s 11). The pilot is written by Mark and Robb Cullen, directed by Doug Liman, and produced by NBC Universal and Sony Pictures Television. Jimmy Kimmel has a place to go in the evenings for at least another year as ABC re-signs him to a fourth season of Jimmy Kimmel Live, taking him thru January 2007. NBC has ordered a script of a new unscripted series (I know that sounds odd, but even so-called reality shows have to start somewhere) which follows a couple from engagement to wedding, from NBC Universal Television Studio. Jonathan Groff is exec prod, together with writers Josh Bycel and Jon Fener, says Hollywood Reporter. Eriq La Salle has signed a one year talent and production deal with CBS and Paramount Network Television, to develop new programming jointly with La Salle’s Humble Journey Films. per Variety. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Sharri Berg has been upped to SVP/News Operations, Fox Television Stations Group. Reporting to Jack Abernethy, CEO/Fox Television Stations Group, Sharri will continue to ensure production and operation synergy between the Fox stations, Fox News and Twentieth Television. Lew Leone has been named VP/GM of the Fox O&O stations WNYW (Fox) and WWOR (UPN affiliate), both serving the New York DMA. Lew will report to Jack Abernethy, CEO of Fox Television Stations, Inc., and replaces Jim Clayton. Lew makes the move to Fox from WCBS/NY where he had been Pres/GM since 2002. Setanta Sports has signed Anna Kornerup as Regional Director/Affiliate Sales. The announcement was made by Kelly Butler, CEO, Setanta Sports North America, to whom she will report. In her new role, Anna will handle affiliate sales activities for the pay network in the Eastern region of the US, developing strategy and working closely with marketing to communicate the brand to potential distributors. Anne Sweeney, co-ChairmanDisney Media Networks, and Pres/Disney-ABC Television Group, announced Albert Cheng has been promoted to the newly created position of EVP/Digital Media, Disney-ABC Television Group. Based in Burbank, Albert is charged with general management and strategic oversight of digital media, as well as development of ancillary revenue streams for Disney-ABC Television Group’s diverse portfolio of broadcast and cable networks. Patrick Scott, President of The Weather Channel Networks, has announced his retirement. He will step down in November and concentrate his future efforts on his various philanthropic activities. Effective immediately, Wyona Lucas will assume the GM role, with additional programming responsibilities for The Weather Channel, Weatherscan and The Weather Channel Radio Network, and newspaper syndication. The WB Network is merging its comedy and alternative programming departments into one entity, which not surprisingly will be called Comedy and Alternative Programming Development. The new unit will be led by two WB program development veterans, Tracey Pakosta and Keith Cox, who will both serve as EVP/Comedy & Alternative. The new team will also include Tal Rabinowitz, Director/Comedy Development, along with Eliot Goldberg, VP/Alternative Programming, and Jennifer Levi, Director/Alternative Programming, will also be part of the realigned unit. Rabinowitz, Goldberg and Levi will report to both Cox and Pakosta. * RATINGS *Sunday — A18-49 Analysis: Not surprisingly, ABC won the night on Sunday in fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research, earning a 7.1/18 A18-49 for the night. Fox was #2 with a 4.7/12, followed by NBC 2.9/7, CBS 2.8/7, WB 1.1/3. At 7p, Fox’s football runover led with a 5.5/16, followed by ABC’s AFHV with a 2.6/8. At 8p ABC was on top and stayed there for the rest of primetime. Extreme Makeover delivered a 5.8/15, followed by Desperate Housewives 11.8/26, and Grey’s Anatomy at 8.3/20. Fox was #2 for the 8p and 9p hours with its standard Sunday evening programming. CBS’ Cold Case made a strong case for #3 at 8p with a 3.9/10, and NBC’s L&O: CI pushed a 3.3/7 at 9p and a 3.9/9 at 10p for Crossing Jordan.
