Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
10/30/12
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 30, 2012, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Another Place to Look for a Job
Are you tired of looking at classifieds in the paper and online? Feel like you are spinning your wheels? Think you’re getting the information too late to be competitive? Well, I just might have the answer for you.
In addition to all the traditional places to look for a job, also look at any publication, like ours, that writes about executive moves. When someone is promoted, they will need someone to take their place. Most likely, the company has already filled that position, however, if the second position was filled within the company, there is a good chance that at least one position will still be open. May not be as far up on the corporate ladder as you might hope, but it is a foot inside the company.
Another item to look out for is when someone leaves a company for a new position at another company. The company he left may very well have an opening.
Even better are executive moves that announce a person will be leading a new office or a newly developed division of the company. Most likely there will be several openings available that will required new people as soon as possible.
Write to these companies, get your resumes and cover letters in before they announce the job. And finally, you will have the advantage.
We are always on the look out for more Experts to advise our readers – if you’re a headhunter, job coach, career advisor, etc., and may be interested in contributing to this edition from time to time, please contact me at [email protected].

You’ve sent out your resume, likely spoken briefly to a Human Resource representative or the hiring manager over the phone, and now they want you to come in for the interview. This is the critical part of the job search process and will determine whether or not the company presents you an offer. Many candidates will review their resume, research the company and formulate intelligent questions, and even think about how they will answer some of the most common interview questions they’re likely to be asked. Those are all very important; however, some candidates forget one important facet what to wear. Dressing for success in the interview will bring you one step closer to that elusive job offer. Following are some of the top tips to help you in your wardrobe selection:
Neatness counts. Realize that you are likely one of many candidates vying for the position, you want to put your best foot forward. As the old adage says, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” For this reason, make sure your attire is neat. Be sure your shirt and slacks are freshly pressed, your shirt is buttoned properly and tucked in, and your socks match. If you’re slovenly dressed for an interview, it sends the message to the interviewer that your work is likely to be equally slovenly. It also gives them the impression that you really don’t want the job, when you couldn’t even be bothered with pulling yourself together for the interview.
Always dress at least one level higher than what you would expect to wear for the position. If you’re interviewing for a warehouse position where you’ll likely be in jeans and a t-shirt all day, put on a pair of slacks and a button down shirt, at the very least. Adding a tie shows even more respect for the hiring process and the time the interviewer is giving you. If you’ll be in a business casual environment, a suit is not a bad choice. It’s always better to be slightly over dressed, and show an effort, than under dressed and give the impression you simply don’t care.
Dress conservatively. Unless you’re applying to a company known for their cutting-edge fashion sense, it’s better to err on the side of conservative when choosing your outfit. Remember, this is an interview not a societal social event, so save the flashy jewelry for another occasion. This is also not a time to douse yourself in perfume or cologne. Your interviewer may be sensitive to smells or simply not have the same taste in scents that you do.
Make sure your clothes are clean. Although you may have only wore that dress shirt for an interview the week before, have it dry cleaned and pressed. Even clean clothes, like rarely used suits, that sit in a closet for a long time can become a little funky smelling. You may not notice it, but the interviewer may. If you smoke, have your interview clothes dry cleaned and keep them outside of the house until you are ready to put them on. Do not smoke in them. This will minimize the chances that you’ll smell of smoke when you do the interview.
Personal hygiene is imperative. Although this goes a little beyond “dressing,” I cannot stress enough the importance of personal hygiene. Be sure your teeth are freshly brushed and even chew a piece of gum on your way to the interview (although, be sure to get rid of it before you enter the building). Interviews are stressful, so make sure you’ve put deodorant on before you head out. Lastly, make sure your hair is neat. Keep a comb or brush in your vehicle for touch ups right before you head inside.
Joel Garfinkle’s proven 10-Step Salary Negotiation Program teaches salary negotiation strategies to help you get the pay, benefits and perks that you deserve. Hundreds of clients have benefitted from Joel’s program. Click here for to view his article: Tips on Asking for a Raise.
What’s the best way to respond to a salary requirement request from a prospective employer?
Discussing salary requirements is perhaps one of the trickiest parts of the interview process. Many believe that the person who offers a salary figure first loses. However, if you’ve done your research and determined your likely value to the company, this is not a part that should worry you.
Consider the salary range the employer posted with their job listing, your previous salary and information garnered from the Web from salary research tools. Now, apply your unique qualifications to this employer’s specific needs and determine where you should be in that range you’ve determined. Explain to the prospective employer how you came up with that figure, giving concrete examples of how your skills and experience are of value to their company.
During the interview process when should I begin negotiating salary?
During the interview process you’re not truly negotiating salary, but you are building your value in the eyes of the potential employer. Think about how you would negotiate a higher salary, if you received an offer. What skills and experience do you think the employer will really find valuable and differentiate you from the other candidates? Focus on your unique qualifications, both quantitative and qualitative, that make you perfect for this position. This way, when you are presented an offer and begin the negotiation process, the hiring manager will already know you are the best candidate and be more eager to negotiate with you.
During Joel’s tenure as an outplacement consultant, he has written many books from topics ranging from Getting Ahead to Find a Job in 14 Days. His Executive Outplacement Service Program will help displaced workers find new jobs quickly.
