Seth MacFarlane was tapped to host The 85th Annual Academy Awards, marking his first time as host of the Oscars. ABC will broadcast the Oscars live on February 24.
Telemundo Media launched Telemundo+, an advertising partnership with Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales unit of its parent company Comcast. Telemundo+, a product of Hispanics at NBCU, is a new advertising platform that allows marketers to geo-target Hispanic households across multiple screens with English, Spanish or bilingual customized messages on general market cable networks. At launch, Telemundo+ has signed several clients including Toyota.
This weekend, the half-hour culinary master class program Martha Stewart’s Cooking School will debut on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. announced yesterday that J.C. Penney Company, Inc. is the presenting sponsor for the show for its first and second seasons and the University of Phoenix will be the show’s title sponsor for its inaugural season. Martha Stewart’s Cooking School is presented in association with WETA Washington, D.C.
A new weekly one-hour personal finance series, Money Matters with Jean Chatzky will debut on RLTV November 20 at 9p. The interactive consumer finance show is a co-production of NBC News and RLTV and features host Jean Chatzky, a personal finance expert who offers advice to Baby Boomers and seniors on how to manage money. Viewers will be able to submit questions via social media platforms including RLTV’s Facebook page and Twitter feed, Chatzky’s Facebook page and Twitter feed or via phone. Chatzky is financial editor for NBC News’ Today Show and the author of seven books. She first appeared on RLTV earlier in 2012 as host of the NBC News co-produced half-hour financial advice series Cash Call with Jean Chatzky.
On Friday, Current TV welcomes a new week-in-review style show to its lineup, John Fugelsang: So That Happened airing at 6p and 9p. The one-hour show will feature comedian Fugelsang as he comments on the week’s events in news, pop culture, politics and the web using videos to illustrate his views. This new show is a precursor to Fugelsang’s nightly series which is set to premiere later this year.
ASPiRE, the television network from Magic Johnson Enterprises is introducing two new weekly features this week. Groundbreaking Movies hosted by Laurence Fishburne, premieres this Thursday at 8p and begins with a showing of Devil in a Blue Dress starring Denzel Washington. Fishburne will introduce a different movie each week, offering background and insight into each film. Groundbreaking Music hosted by Grammy-winning jazz artist Esperanza Spalding begins this Friday at 8p with Earth Wind and Fire Live. Groundbreaking Music will spotlight music and performance specials. ASPiRE continues to air Groundbreaking Comedy on Tuesdays at 8p hosted by actor and comedian Jonathan Slocumb throughout fall with back-to-back episodes of The Bill Cosby Show followed by stacked episodes of The Flip Wilson Show.
Destination America has approved two new series which will join the network’s lineup this fall and winter. Buying Alaska follows different people as they search for new homes in Alaska that offers amenities in tune with the spectacular views and surrounding wildlife. Buying Alaska debuts October 21 at 10p and is produced by Paper Route Productions. The second series is EPIC which features over-the-top luxury items that people are willing to buy that sport expert craftsmanship, technology and innovation. EPIC, produced by Tremendous! Entertainment premieres December 16 at 10p.
Brothers Scott and Mike Ciprari, owners of the custom drum making business SJC Custom Drums star in the new original series Drum Heads premiering on Halogen TV October 24 at 9p. The series follows the duo as they continue running their profitable business creating drum kits for notables in music such as Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Keyshia Cole and others despite their struggle to build a personal relationship with one another. The series is produced and directed by Demetrius Graham.
Soon after premiering new series Flea Market Flip last Friday, HGTV handed the series a second season renewal. Hosted by Lara Spencer, the series pits two teams of flea market buyers against each other to compete for $5,000. The second season is currently in production on eight half-hour episodes slated to debut in early 2013. Flea Market Flip airs on HGTV on Fridays at 9p.
Sunday’s season premieres of Dexter and Homeland on Showtime both saw gains. At 9p, Dexter debuted its seventh season with 2.4 million total viewers, the series’ highest-rated premiere ever. At 10p, Homeland was back for its second season, up 60% over its season one premiere with 1.73 million total viewers.
Programming Note: New episodes of Bayou Billionaires and Redneck Rehab on CMT are moving to Tuesday nights beginning October 9. At 9p, back-to-back episodes of Bayou Billionaires will air followed by Redneck Rehab at 10p.
AKQA, an ideas and innovation company has opened two new offices in Atlanta and Portland, OR. AKQA now has five locations in North America and ten offices worldwide.

REELZCHANNEL made a deal with ClearVision Digital Networks to offer its original programming about movies and celebrities to airport visitors worldwide. This new partnership will bring REELZCHANNEL’s programming such as the show Hollywood Dailies among others to more than 2 billion travelers each year.
Argonon has become the first client for TCB Media Rights, the new rights ownership and distribution company that launched in early September 2012. TCB Media Rights will work with Argonon to support its international growth goals with a focus on rights retention, development of IP for the company’s program assets and helping to spur creative synergy across the group’s key international hubs. TCB Media Rights will work with creative and commercial partners at Argonon which has headquarters in London, New York, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Sewee Entertainment in partnership with Conservation International has launched The Ocean Health Index with local TV stations across America. The Ocean Health Index is a news service considered the “Dow Jones” for documenting ocean health. The service has been picked up by KCBS-KCAL/Los Angeles, WJLA/Washington, DC, KOMO/Seattle, KATU/Portland, KHNL/Honolulu, KBAK/Bakersfield among other stations.
OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network forged an exclusive partnership with actor, director, screenwriter, playwright and producer, Tyler Perry. OWN will become Perry’s new destination for all new television series and projects including two new scripted series for OWN set to premiere in mid-2013. These two original scripted series for OWN will have Perry involved as EP, writer and director. Perry is behind the television series Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Meet the Browns and For Better or Worse.
TLC is teaming with Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins on a new docu-series Totally T-Boz (wt) as she heads back to Los Angeles to resurrect her music career, now as a single mom and after surviving years of recovery from a life-threatening brain tumor which has forced her to relearn how to walk and talk. Watkins’ daughter Chase and son Kayo will join her on the show along with her cousins Barb and Chris, her BFF Tae-Tae and business partner, Tara. TLC has ordered four episodes of Totally T-Boz and production has begun with John Doe Media producing. TLC will roll out the new series in early 2013.
The CW gave script orders to a supernatural-themed project titled Agaddon’s Journal, a one-hour drama from Bill Haber, who is behind Rizzoli & Isles and Beauty and the Beast, reports THR. The drama is about an angel that is empowered by a book that records those who make a deal with the devil and who tries to save souls with the help of a sheltered young woman. Haber will serve as EP through his Ostar Productions with Douglas Segal, co-producer of Three Kings on board to write the script.
CBS’ new series Made in Jersey cast Kris Polaha (Ringer) as a charming guy who is a potential love interest for Janet Montgomery’s Martina, per TVLine.
Zodiak Rights, the international unit of Zodiak Media is bringing the US series Guinness World Records Gone Wild produced by High Noon Entertainment to MIPCOM. The series has 6 one-hour episodes and will launch on truTV later this year. Zodiak Rights made an international distribution and production deal with Guinness World Records TV in 2011 to represent their entire catalog worldwide for finished programming and to create new formats with international production partners.
Estrella TV is bringing its anthology series Historias Delirantes with 45 one-hour episodes to MIPCOM. The Spanish-language series is part intrigue and part paranormal. This fall the series’ third season will launch in the US.
Rive Gauche Television, Sea World Parks & Entertainment and Litton Entertainment are presenting the series Sea Rescue with 39 half-hour episodes. The series spotlights efforts to save marine wildlife across the world. Sea Rescue airs in the US on ABC as part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure and Rive Gauche will debut the series at MIPCOM.
As of October 1, Azteca launched its pay-TV network Azteca International and its 24-hour telenovelas network, Azteca Novelas on TV Cable in Ecuador.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: Univision was the overall top network Friday among A18-49 at 1.6/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva did best at 8p with a 1.6/6 followed by ABC’s Shark Tank at 1.5/6 in second and the season premiere of CBS’ CSI: NY at 1.3/5. Univision claimed a bigger lead during 9p with Abismo de Pasion at 1.8/6 trailed by the season debut of Grimm on NBC at 1.6/5 and tying for third place was CBS’ new series Made in Jersey and the season launch of Fringe on FOX at 1.1/4 each. Then at 10p, the season premiere of Blue Bloods on CBS was #1 at 1.5/5 unseating Univision which came next with Amor Bravio at 1.4/5 and sharing the third position was ABC’s 20/20 and the season bow of Dateline on NBC at 1.3/4 each.

The T. Howard Foundation, a national non-profit organization focused on increasing diversity in multimedia and entertainment industries added three new members to its Board of Directors. The new board appointees are William S. Koenig, EVP/Business Affairs and General Counsel of NBA Entertainment and NBA TV; Joseph R. Theatre and media producer Robin de Levita and former President/International TV Production at Sony Pictures Television, Kees Abrahams have established Imagine Nation, a new global media content company specializing in live entertainment, film and television. Kees was also one of the founders and former CEO of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? with 2waytraffic. In their new venture, Kees will serve as CEO and Robin as CCO. The company’s Non-Executive Chairman will be Chris Pye who has held senior positions at the BBC, ITV and Sony Pictures.
Fandango named Paul Yanover to the newly created position as President. Paul previously was with Disney as a digital executive and in his new role will report to Nick Lehman, President/Digital for NBCUniversal Entertainment Networks & Integrated Media.
Independent media services company, KSL Media added Deanna S. Kawasaki as EVP/Managing Director of Consumer Insight and Analytics. Deanna will concentrate on strategic planning and direction of all consumer and media analytics efforts at KSL that encompasses customer segmentation, target audience profiling and media mix modeling.
Digital media company Blip hired Darren Cross as VP/Business and Corporate Development and Robin Wilson was promoted to VP/Operations based in New York.
JW Johnson joins Knoxville-based RIVR Media in its development team as Director/Development. Prior to this appointment, JW was with CBS Sports where he spent more than 15 years covering events such as the Masters, Super Bowl XXXVIII, the Final Four and more. At RIVR Media, JW reports to Craig Miller, VP/Development.
Multi-platform creative content agency, M3 Creative appointed theatrical marketing producer David Yocum as Partner/Creative Director of the company’s newly-established M3 Creative Trailers, its motion picture advertising unit.
