Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 2, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC Sports had a lot to celebrate on Sunday with a one-two ratings punch featuring the Ryder Cup and Sunday Night Football. A European miracle comeback capped 17 hours of Ryder Cup coverage on Golf Channel on NBC over the weekend and delivered the best overnight rating for the final round in 13 years. The channel drew a 4.1/9 for the last day of the event to mark a 71% boost over the last Ryder Cup in 2010, according to Nielsen. On SNF, a down-to-the-wire Eagles victory over the Giants later registered a 15.6 overnight rating and a 25 share, up 23% over last year’s Week 4 SNF game and the best overnight rating for a Week 4 primetime game in 16 years.
On the Air
Saturday’s college football ratings saw ABC’s Ohio St./Michigan St. game take the day with a 3.6 overnight score, according to Nielsen. The next highest rated game was a tie between FOX’s Texas/Oklahoma St. encounter and CBS’ coverage of Tennessee/Georgia, both with a 2.8. ABC’s Wisconsin/Nebraska matchup was next with a 2.6.
On that note FOX Sports Media Group made its college football selections for FOX and FX for Saturday, Oct. 13. FOX Sports will program a Pac-12 contest featuring Utah/UCLA at 3p. Craig Bolerjack, Joel Klatt, and Petros Papadakis will call the action from The Rose Bowl. Then at 7p, the channel will offer USC/Washington with Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and reporter Julie Alexandria handling broadcast duties. ESPN’s telecast of the first-day matches in the 39th Ryder Cup on Friday, September 28, set records as cable’s highest-rated and most-viewed telecast of the event. With 11.5 hours on deck, the channel drew a 1.5 household rating with an average of 1,679,359 viewers, according to Nielsen. The highest previous Ryder Cup first-day average cable rating on record was a 1.6 on the USA Network for the 2004 event. That telecast averaged 1,394,064 viewers.

ESPN Radio is set to offer live coverage of Adam Greenberg’s first Major League at bat in more than seven years during Tuesday night’s Mets/Marlins game. Greenberg first made his MLB debut with the Cubs on July 9, 2005, but was hit by the first pitch and hospitalized. The Marlins received approval from Commissioner Bud Selig to sign Greenberg to a one-day contract, and ESPN Radio has received permission to go live to Greenberg’s one at bat in the game.
