Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 29, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NBA locked in a multiyear marketing and technology partnership with Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC that makes the brand the official handset, tablet, and television provider of the NBA, WNBA, and NBA Development League. Samsung will touch audiences in the leagues via events, television and digital exposure as well as customized content available on Samsung devices. The collaboration represents Samsung’s most extensive partnership with a North American sports league as well as the NBA’s most extensive partnership with a consumer electronics company. In addition, for the first time, NBA referees will be provided with Samsung tablets and will use Samsung technology courtside in all NBA arenas to review key plays throughout the season.
FOX Sports rejiggered its internal lineup with Co-President and COO Randy Freer shifting to the new position of President and COO of Fox Networks Group where he will directly oversee revenue, distribution and operations while continuing his responsibilities in rights acquisitions and team and league relationships. FNG includes FOX Broadcasting Company, FOX Sports, FX Networks, Fox International Channels and National Geographic Channels. Fellow Co-President Eric Shanks now takes the sole mantle of President and COO of FOX Sports Media Group.
Meanwhile, Game 4 of the 2013 World Series on FOX last night continued its hot streak, posting the highest-rated and most-watched game of the series with a 9.4/15 national household rating and 16 million viewers, according to Nielsen. That is up 6% in rating and 3% in viewership over last year’s series-clinching Game 4. In addition, Sunday night’s telecast ranks as the highest-rated and most-watched World Series Game 4 since 2009. Through four games, the 2013 World Series on FOX is averaging an 8.4/14 national household rating and 14 million viewers, up 11% in rating and 10% in viewership respectively.
ESPN laid out its 2013-14 women’s college basketball regular-season schedule which will include a record-high 209 exclusive games across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3. The season will culminate with the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Nashville on April 6 & 8. Schedule highlights include a new ESPN Sunday afternoon package of games starting Feb. 2, with ESPN2 playing home to the Big Monday series and 32 games. ESPNU lined up a slate of 24 regular-season games, including a consistent Sunday afternoon schedule during the conference season. Meanwhile, a record-high 148 exclusive games will be shown on ESPN3 this season, including a full slate of ACC, American and Atlantic Sun contests.
FOX Sports revealed its on-air broadcasters for the company’s upcoming broadcasts of Big East games on FOX, FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports 2. Joining the previously announced lead broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson and analyst Bill Raftery will be Tarik Turner, Jim Jackson, Stephen Bardo, Ron Thompson, Donny Marshall, Jim Spanarkel, Bob Wenzel, Gary Williams and Kevin O’Neill on commentary. Calling play-by-play will be Justin Kutcher, Dick Stockton, Thom Brennaman, Brian Anderson, Eric Collins and Kevin Kugler. The FOX Sports college basketball season begins Friday, Nov. 8.
FOX Sports also announced its college football selections for the channel’s first season doubleheader on Nov. 9, lining up USC/Cal at 3p, followed by Texas/West Virginia at 7p. FOX Sports 1 carries an additional Big 12 game that day with Kansas/Oklahoma State at 4p. FOX Sports 1 kicks off the weekend with an Oklahoma/Baylor matchup on Thursday at 7p.
Around the dial, CBS Sports will broadcast an SEC doubleheader on Saturday, Nov. 9, pitting Mississippi State/Texas A&M at 3:30p before a primetime game at 8p that will see LSU/Alabama. Tim Brando, analyst Aaron Taylor and reporter Kristina Akra call the early action from Texas while Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Tracy Wolfson drive primetime.
ESPN2 will carry the 2013 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards Show tonight at 8p from the Baseball Tonight studio at ESPN’s Bristol campus. The one-hour telecast will be hosted by Adnan Virk and include insights from Baseball Tonight analyst Nomar Garciaparra as well as include a special edition of Baseball Tonight’s Web Gems, which will highlight the best defensive plays of the 2013 MLB season.
HBO Sports’ 24/7 reality franchise returns on Nov. 9 at 12:15a for its 18th boxing installment with 24/7 Pacquiao/Rios. The all-access series follows the two fighters as they prepare for their welterweight showdown on Nov. 23 from the Venetian Macao’s CotaiArena in Macau, China.
Golf Channel wraps up Long Drive Month with the Re/Max World Long Drive Championship finals tomorrow night at 9p. The championship will see eight of the longest drivers in the world will face off in a $250,000 winner-take-all competition from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Golf Channel’s broadcast team will include Bob Papa, Michael Breed and Holly Sonders.

Procter & Gamble launched the company’s Thank You Mom campaign yesterday by tapping the talents of Olympic athletes that include Olay athlete Lindsey Vonn, Gillette athletes Felix Neureuther and Sven Kramer as well as Pantene athlete Elena Ilinykh for its Raising an Olympian series. The campaign is supported by more than fifteen P&G brands around the globe as part of an homage to the mothers who helped the Olympians achieve their dreams. The initiative highlights “the unconditional love moms give their kids no matter what” with the first half of the films able to be viewed on P&G’s YouTube Channel.
Speaking of the Winter Games, Greek Yogurt brand Chobani announced that the company will power six athletes’ journeys to the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As a supporter of Team USA during the Olympic and Paralympic Games for the second time, Chobani will be participating in the Road to Sochi tour, delivering full-size samples across the U.S. leading up to the Games. Athletes include Lindsey Jacobellis, Allison Jones, Hannah Kearney, Zach Parise, Rico Roman and Evan Strong.
ESPN announced the return of the Fan Hall of Fame yesterday, designed to honor extraordinary sports fandom. The initiative, now in its sophomore year, will induct the three most remarkable and inspiring fans after a nationwide search and integrated campaign across ESPN’s platforms. The three final winners will have their names engraved in a permanent place of honor: three stadium chairs, placed on the lawn of ESPN’s Bristol, Conn. campus. Applications can be made through Nov. 18 with the ten finalists announced on Dec. 2. Final inductees will be revealed on Dec. 13 and honored at an induction ceremony in 2014.
Digital & Technology
ESPN Digital Media announced that it reached 72.7 million unique visitors in September, marking the largest monthly unique reach ever within the sports category across computers, smartphones and tablets, according to comScore Multi-Platform data. ESPN drew 30% of all sports category usage across digital platforms last month. In total, ESPN digital properties attracted 72.7 million unique visitors, logging 7.3 billion minutes of usage and 805.5 million visits. A record-setting 47.4 million people used ESPN mobile properties for 3.2 billion minutes in September, the first month ever in which more unique people visited ESPN mobile than ESPN.com.
AT&T U-verse added fully enabled, TV Everywhere capabilities for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes, joining Bright House Networks, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, Hawaiian Telcom, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS as television providers that offer the service.
HRTV revealed a slate of exclusive online Breeders’ Cup content for HRTV.com. The site will carry all Breeders’ Cup races, including the Classic, live and in HD, along with the Post Position Draw, Player’s Show, Morning Works, “Pursuit of the Cup,” plus handicapping insight from HRTV hosts and analysts. Additionally, a multi-cam video player will allow visitors to view various angles of Breeders’ Cup races, so they may “direct” their own view.

The Disney and ESPN Media Networks Group announced the promotions of Lauren Morrissey and Pete O’Connell to Vice President of Affiliate Sales while Kimberly K. Wilson was named Vice President of Affiliate Marketing. They each previously served as Senior Director in their respective positions.
Outdoor Channel named a slew of appointments that include Steve Smith as Executive Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing; Bill Osborn as Senior Vice President of Marketing; Scott Long as Vice President of Finance, Media; and James Alexander as Vice President of Consumer Insights and Analytics.
