Grabbing current headlines, MTV is working on a reality series about the Occupy Wall Street protesters at Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, New York called True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street. True Life will follow three young people who are involved with the movement in New York. MTV spent two weeks with the threesome and other protestors, following their daily activities. The series is set to premiere November 5 at 6p.
MTV also welcomes back Beavis and Butt-Head as a new animated comedy block debuts this Thursday starting with Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head at 10p followed by the series opener of Good Vibes at 1030p featuring voice talent from Adam Brody, Josh Gad, Danny McBride and Debi Mazar and others.
Next month, SCIENCE launches the world premiere of its new eight-episode series Prophets of Science Fiction from Ridley Scott on November 9 at 10p. Scott is the guide on the series exploring the relationship between science fiction and the ever-changing world of science and technology. The opening episode showcases Mary Shelley, author of the classic Frankenstein and regarded as the person who created the science fiction genre. Other sci-fi geniuses highlighted include Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, George Lucas, Arthur C. Clarke, H.G. Wells, Robert Heinlein and Phillip K. Dick. Scott is joined on the series by other cinematic and scientific experts including the director Paul Verhoeven and theoretical physicist, Dr. Michio Kaku as they view film clips and cutting-edge animation pertaining to their subject. Prophets of Science Fiction is produced for the network by RDI Productions and Go Go Luckey Productions.
Next year, Outdoor Channel is bringing back its series Buccaneers & Bones sporting new episodes and a fresh all-star cast. The series follows famous celebrity anglers such as Tom Brokaw, Liam Neeson and Michael Keaton and more as they highlight the efforts of the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust which conducts research for future conservation programs to protect and increase the populations of bonefish, tarpon and permit. The new season will be set at the historic Deep Water Cay resort on Grand Bahamas Island and other locales in Florida. Tom Brokaw narrates the show which is produced by Denver-based Orion Multimedia.
Preliminary numbers for new series Boss, starring Kelsey Grammer on STARZ attracted 1.72 million total viewers for the premiere launch weekend. Boss’ combined Friday night audience tallied 1.05 million total viewers with 659,000 viewers watching the 10p episode.

Katie Couric’s upcoming nationally syndicated talk show, Katie has been cleared in more than 60% of the US in a matter of six weeks, reports Disney-ABC Domestic Television. The one-hour daytime talk show is scheduled to launch in September 2012. Disney-ABC Domestic Television has secured station clearances in early fringe time periods with sales in 14 of the top 15 markets. Katie now has been sold to broadcast groups including Allbritton Communications, Belo Corporation, Cox Media Group, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television, LIN Broadcasting, McGraw-Hill, Scripps Howard Broadcasting and Young Broadcasting. Recent clearances include those on WFAA/Dallas; WCVB/Boston; WSB/Atlanta; WJLA/Washington, D.C., WXYZ/Detroit; KNXV/Phoenix; KING/Seattle; and WFTS/Tampa among others. The previously-announced ABC Owned station group will also be airing Katie.
Daytime talk show The Wendy Williams Show has been renewed through 2014 by Debmar-Mercury and the Fox Television Stations on the FOX-owned stations. The Wendy Williams Show delivers solid ratings for the FOX stations across the country. Nationally, the talker averaged a 1.0 HH in the week ended October 9.
Syfy in the UK has picked up the exclusive television rights to NBC’s upcoming new drama series Persons Unknown. The 13-episode series was acquired via Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. Persons Unknown debuts on NBC in the US on October 31 at 9p airing over seven weeks with double episodes and a series finale.
REELZCHANNEL announced it has reached more than 60 million homes in the US. The television network all about movies added close to ten million homes from September 2010 to September 2011, says Nielsen.
NBC approved a put pilot commitment for 1600 Penn, a political-themed single-camera comedy from Twentieth Century Fox Television. The plot centers on a dysfunctional family that lives in the White House. The project hails from Book of Mormon Star Josh Gad, former speechwriter for President Obama Jon Lovett and director Jason Winer (Modern Family) who will all serve as executive producers.
Production has commenced on season two of Fallings Skies on TNT, the series starring Noah Wyle and produced by DreamWorks Television with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. Falling Skies will return to TNT’s lineup in summer 2012. Over its first season, Falling Skies tallied more than 6.9 million total viewers.
Negotiations are in the works for Melanie Griffith to perhaps star in a new drama series pilot for Lifetime titled American Housewife from writer Erik Jendersen (Band of Brothers) and her husband Antonio Banderas. The plot centers on an affluent housewife who has conversations with her inner voice. Fox Television Studios will produce. If the deal is finalized, Griffith, Banderas and Ray Rickard are expected to serve as producers with Jendersen.
Executive producer Carol Mendelsohn (CSI) has sold four more one-hour dramas to the networks CBS, The CW and FX via her Carol Mendelsohn Productions company through CBS Television Studios, per THR:
- The Murder Room has a script order from CBS based on the book by Michael Capuzzo about a famous profiler, a forensic artist and a top FBI investigator that form a team to investigate crimes that have stumped law officials around the world. George Nolfi will write and serve as EP with Mendelsohn and head of development Julie Weitz.
- Unearthly was given a script order by The CW based on the book by Cynthia Hand about a girl who find out her destiny is to become an angel. Kevin Murphy (Hellcats) will write and be an EP with Mendelsohn and Weitz.
- Also for The CW is The Hollows, a project based on the book by Kim Harrison described as an urban fantasy about a private investigator/witch who works with local law officials on crimes both ordinary and supernatural. Jordan Hawley (Smallville writer) will serve as EP as well as writer; Mendelsohn and Weitz will also executive produce.
- The fourth project, Throwdown Gun for FX was granted a script order and is from author James Ellroy who is on board to write and executive produce with Clark Peterson, Mendelsohn and Weitz.
Actress Aisha Tyler, best known for her roles on Ghost Whisperer and Friends, is joining CBS’ The Talk as a new co-host alongside Sara Gilbert, Julie Chen, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood. Tyler had previously guest-hosted on The Talk which is commemorating its one-year anniversary this month. Tyler begins her new gig on Monday. She also continues to be a voice talent on FX’s animated series Archer playing Lana.
Vampires Diaries star Arielle Kebbel is staying with The CW after landing a recurring role on 90210. Kebbel will play Vanessa, a bad girl who becomes romantically linked with one of the show’s leading men. Kebbel makes her 90210 bow in December.
Usually a comedic actress, Jenna Elfman is cast in the drama Damages for its fifth and final season on DirecTV. Elfman will play an investment bank employee who is bothered by her company’s activities. Additionally, Alexandra Socha (The Big C) was cast as the daughter to Elfman’s character and John Hannah will be in multiple episodes playing an advisor to Channing McClaren (Ryan Phillippe). The final season of Damages will air on DirecTV next summer.
As previously reported, Chord Overstreet will reprise his role as Sam Evans on FOX’s Glee in a multi-episode run this December. FOX will air new episodes of Glee beginning November 1 at 8p.
Friday A18-49 Analysis: On Friday, ABC and CBS shared #1 among A18-49 at 1.6/5 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, Univision’s Una Familia con Suerte did best at 1.7/6 and FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares was #2 at 1.4/5 and CBS’ A Gifted Man was #3 at 1.2/5. Competition was thick at 9p though CBS’ CSI: NY prevailed with a 1.8/6 followed by ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at 1.7/5 and Univision’s La Fuerza del Destino was a close third at 1.6/5. ABC then won the 10p hour with 20/20 at 2.0/6 and CBS’ Blue Bloods was second at 1.7/5.

Former ABC Entertainment executive Kevin Plunkett was named to the newly-minted role as SVP/Scripted Programming at E! Entertainment Television. Kevin will supervise all scripted content development at E! in addition to working closely with the creative community and developing new relationships within the entertainment industry for the network. Kevin reports to Lisa Berger, President/Entertainment Programming.
Starting November 1, Nina Laricheva takes on the new appointment of VP/Commercial Development for BBC Worldwide Channels in the EMEA region. Nina will spearhead revenue growth and strategic development in this region on behalf of BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, BBC Entertainment, CBeebies and BBC HD as well as for BBC World News. Nina will be replacing Ian McDonough in this position who was promoted to GM in August 2010 and will also be his deputy. She will report to Ian McDonough as well who serves as SVP/GM EMEA, BBC Worldwide Channels.
Technicolor tapped three staff members for its animated content development and production team:
- Robert Winthrop assumes the role as VP/Animation and Games for Technicolor Digital Productions where he will manage a studio of 500+ animation talent. Robert was hired at the company in June 2011 and before that was a Producer and Head/Production for SD Entertainment.
- Alison Warner joins as VP/Intellectual Properties, Sales, Acquisitions and Co-Productions for Technicolor Digital Productions based in London. Before Technicolor, Alison worked for Cookie Jar Entertainment Inc. for more than five years as VP/European Sales.
- Siju Thomas was promoted to the role of Creative Director at Technicolor India. Siju has been with Technicolor India since 2009.
Detroit-based Doner elevated Bruce Haynes to SVP/Strategy and Activation up from VP/Associate Media Director as well as Andrew Tahy to VP/Associate Strategic Leader up from Associate Media Director. Bruce will oversee the media planning and buying for the agency’s AutoTrader.com and KelleyBlueBook.com accounts in addition to developing and negotiating media strategies for those brands and other agency accounts. Andrew will utilize his analytical insights to enhance the overall brand strategy encompassing local promotions, traditional media added value and sponsorship activation. Andrew will also work in the areas of media and strategic brand planning, leading major projects and sponsorship efforts for the Arby’s and PulteGroup accounts.
