Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 23, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
And so it comes down to two. The Tigers and Giants will square off in the 2012 World Series on FOX with MLB announcing air times for the best of seven series. Game 1 hits the network at 7:30p tomorrow night at SF, followed by Game 2 on Thursday at 7:30p. On Saturday, the Series moves to Detroit with Game 3 beginning at 7:30p, Game 4 at 8p and Game 5 (if necessary) back at 7:30p. The final two games would then be shift back to SF televised on Halloween, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at 7:30p.

ESPN locked in a multiyear extension with Dan Shulman, who will continue to serve as the voice of Sunday Night Baseball. Under the deal, he will also resume his play-by-play roles for ESPN’s Saturday primetime Men’s college basketball telecasts with analyst Dick Vitale as well as ESPN Radio’s coverage of the MLB postseason, including the World Series.
CBS’ coverage of the Jets/Patriots matchup in its NFL doubleheader this week scored a 16.2 overnight rating for the network, according to Nielsen. Meanwhile, NBC’s SNF matchup pitting the Bengals and Steelers walked away with an 11.7 in the overnight tallies, up 43% over the same week a year ago.
Fox’s Cardinals/ Giants NLCS Game 6 on Sunday night delivered a 5.5 overnight Nielsen score to the channel, marking a 6% markup over the network’s coverage of the Rangers/Tigers game a year ago.
FOX Sports Media Group announced its college football selections for its platforms for Nov. 3, including a key Oregon/USC matchup slated for Saturday at 7p on FOX. Gus Johnson and analyst Charles Davis, along with reporter Julie Alexandria make the call from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. FX will also feature a Pac-12 battle, showcasing Stanford and Colorado at 2p. FOX’s 3p matchup that weekend will be announced on Sunday.
CBS News and CBS Sports reporter Armen Keteyian has been tapped as a full-time correspondent for the new SHOWTIME Sports magazine series 60 Minutes Sports. Keteyian will also continue to contribute occasionally to CBS News daily broadcasts. In addition to Keteyian, the monthly series will also feature other on-air talent from 60 Minutes and CBS Sports.
Now that Tommy Gainey is the first alumnus from Golf Channel’s Big Break reality competition series to win on the PGA TOUR at The McGladrey Classic, Golf Channel will honor the athlete with past episodes from his participation in Big Break IV: USA vs. Europe and Big Break VII: Reunion. The shows will air Tuesday from 4-6p and Wednesday from 8-10p.
Costas Tonight is back this evening, with Bob Costas bringing in former Major League Baseball manager Bobby Valentine for his first sit-down interview since being fired by the Red Sox. The episode will air this evening at 10p on NBC Sports Network. In addition, NBC Sports’ and Access Hollywood’s own Michelle Beadle will make her debut on Costas Tonight, joining Costas to discuss top trending social media topics; while Jeremy Roenick will discuss the NHL lockout.
FIBA and ESPN inked a multiyear multiplatform deal for the rights to more than 400 games across six tournaments from 2013-2015. The agreement covers the FIBA Americas Championships (2013, 2015), the EuroBaskets (2013, 2015), the FIBA Basketball World Cup (2014) and the FIBA World Championship for Women (2014). Television rights will be for both English and Spanish throughout the US and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico. Overall, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes will combine to televise every game.
DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series returns to Fight Now TV tomorrow night at 9p with a 10-round main event pitting light heavyweight “Irish” Seanie Monaghan (15-0, 10 KOs) defending his World Boxing Council (WBC) Americas title against gatekeeper Rayco “War” Saunders (22-17-2, 9 KOs).

NBC’s Sunday Night Football franchise is officially TV’s costliest show for advertisers, according to Ad Age, with an average 30-second spot this season running a cool $545,142, up from $512,367 last season.
Major League Baseball is bringing back the MLB Fan Cave for a third year of baseball bonding. Hundreds of celebrities and athletes have visited the cave in the first two seasons, and what was once a stunt, now boasts over 1.2 million followers on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
ESPN is revisiting the NBA on ESPN RV Tour marketing campaign to promote the upcoming NBA season. Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook guests in the first spot, which debuted yesterday. The campaign originally launched in 2007, and chronicles the adventures of ESPN commentators Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Breen, Magic Johnson, Doris Burke and Jon Barry as they cross the country in an NBA on ESPN branded RV.
The Madison Square Garden Company locked in Kia Motors America to a long-term extension and expansion of their marketing partnership. The deal makes Kia will be the Official Vehicle of Madison Square Garden, the Theater at Madison Square Garden, the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty, and college basketball and tennis, as well as the Concert Series at The Garden. The partnership also includes an expanded presence for Kia on MSG’s regional sports networks, MSG and MSG+, as well as integration on The Garden, Knicks, Rangers and Liberty websites.
The Senior Bowl officially named Atlanta-based Sports and Entertainment agency MELT as their official sales and marketing agency for the annual event. MELT’s first assignment will be to pin down a title sponsorship for the contest, which takes place on January 26, 2013, as well as expand mobile and digital content offerings.
Oakley is now the latest sponsor to drop Lance Armstrong, following the announcement that the famed cyclist was stripped of his Tour de France titles and banned him for life following doping allegations.
The NBA tapped Brand Extensions Russia JJP as the league’s licensing agent in the Russian market. Brand Extensions Russia will now focus on identifying partners for the NBA across multiple categories including back-to-school, home furnishings, and publishing, adding to an existing NBA licensee base which includes exclusive relationships in the apparel, interactive games, sporting goods, and trading cards & sticker categories.
