Cynopsis: Classified Advantage
10.20.09
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 20, 2009, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage! This edition includes the top job listings in the Television, Media and Ad Agency markets, professional development advice from national experts, your Q & A’s with our experts, and a summary of executive moves among top companies.
Dear John, we want to scam you
Scams are nothing new. In tough economic times, scams become more abundant and creative. When things are tough, scam artists see it as an opportunity to take advantage of people’s desperation. The following are some of the scams currently being employed.
- “Dear John, what an amazing resume you have posted on LinkedIn! With such talent and experience, I would assume that you have already received many job offers. However, if this is not the case, please contact me as soon as possible. I specialize in placing people within your industry in well paying jobs with distinguished companies. For a small upfront fee …”
There are many recruiters that do their job professionally and then there are recruiters who ask for money up front. The problem is, once they have your money, they have no incentive to find you a job. Even if they offer a guarantee of a refundable fee if you’re dissatisfied, you’ll probably never see that money again. If you are looking for a good executive search firm, ask for recommendations from colleagues and friends. Investigate the company, call BBB, Google search. Most reputable recruiters get paid by the company looking to fill a vacancy, and not the candidates.
- “Congratulations, based on the resume you posted on the ABCD1234 job board, you seem like the ideal person for the position of Team Leader of our Marketing Unit. If you will fill out and return the enclosed form, we will have our HR Department begin processing the required paperwork. Then we can arrange for you to meet with Mr. Scamartist, our Vice President of Marketing, get you on our payroll, and enrolled in our outstanding “Top Notch” benefit package as soon as possible.”
This is just another way of getting personal information, but take note of the amount of detail giving this scam credibility. The form will ask for Social Security Number, bank name and account number for direct deposit, among other things that will allow these thieves to steal from you.
A close relation of the above is: “Dear John, we are sorry to inform you there was a problem in posting your account on our job board. Please click on this hyperlink and follow the instructions to correct this error.”
Con men will look for recently posted accounts on familiar job sites and send this email in hopes of attaining personal information.
Scams can be executed even after being interviewed
- “Congratulations John! We want to hire you as Manager for our Marketing team. If you will please send your bank’s name and account number so we can direct deposit your paychecks, to [email protected], …”
If the email address from the company does not have a primary domain, such as [email protected], be very careful before sending anything. In fact, be wary of ever sending this type of information in an email. Due to the sensitivity of the information, most companies will take care of direct deposit information in person.
- “Dear John, we want to congratulate you on your outstanding interview and are pleased to offer you a position within our company. Prior to meeting with you and making our offer official, please submit a check for $125.00 to cover our pre-hiring background check…”
There is a good chance you will never hear from this company again.
- “Dear Giovanni, we would like to extend an offer of employment with our office in Rome, Italy. Could you possibly clear the time to meet with us here in our offices in Rome – at our expense of course – in the next three weeks? Please advise us of a convenient date, and please include a copy of your current passport …”
Again, another way of getting sensitive information.
ETC.
- “Dear John, we know times are tough and we are trying to help. (WATCH OUT) Our new service will provide job listings in your industry from all over the country or just right here in your home state of Pennsylvania. For the nominal fee of $60 a month and you will receive weekly job listings not available anywhere else.”
The job listings you will receive are usually copied and pasted onto a list, and rarely limited to your industry. Other companies simply send you links to newspaper classifieds and job boards. And the jobs that aren’t available anywhere else, they are often the jobs that have already been filled and discontinued on most sites.
- “Dear John, we are sorry to inform you that your credit card account has been fraudulently used by someone unauthorized by you and therefore frozen for your protection. Please call our Fraud Department at 1-800-555-5555 as soon as possible to correct this situation.”
When you call, they will ask you to verify your account by giving your social security number, bank account and/or pin number etc. Never, ever give out this information. If you receive a message of this sort, call your credit card company using a phone number you know is correct, not the number given. Nearly every time, your account is fine.
- “Dear John, we are looking for a Foreign Agent to deposit our funds into an American bank. For this you will receive 5% of all monies deposited. Please send us your bank’s name, account and routing numbers so we can start the process as soon as possible.”
Really?
Most of these scams can be avoided if you simply refuse to give out any information to people unknown to you. Con Artists are smart and creative, and they will frequently change the story, but the goal is always the same; separate you from your money by obtaining sensitive information.

Every personal finance expert out there proclaims the single most important thing you can do in these turbulent times is set up an emergency fund. And every one of us out in the real world knows that’s far easier said than done. It’s hard enough just trying to make ends meet and keep up with loan payments. If there’s anything left over there’s retirement and the college funds to think about. Knitting a safety net is one of those ideas that sound great in theory, but seem impossible in practice. Difficult it may be, but it’s not impossible. And strangely enough, some of the best tactics involve your work life, not your personal life.
First, if you routinely receive a large tax refund, consider increasing the number of dependents you claim on your W2 form in order to lower the amount withheld from your paycheck for taxes. The number needn’t match the number of dependents you actually claim on your tax return. There’s nothing illegal about a single individual with no children claiming, say, 10 dependents to minimize withholding and maximize the size of a paycheck. As long as those make believe dependents aren’t claimed on a 1040 and you meet your obligations, the government won’t care. While it’s important to consult your tax advisor, what’s really essential is that you set up a direct deposit that funnels the “found money” to a new bank account. Otherwise that extra money will end up being spent.
Second, gather all the information available from your employer on its rules about withdrawals and loans against 401(k) accounts. Most plans allow you to make hardship withdrawals from your 401(k), and many plans allow you to take out loans from the account. Hardship withdrawals are designed for certain situations. However few employers want to get involved with their employees’ personal lives and so rarely push for proof. The downside is considerable, however, since you’ll owe taxes on the withdrawal as well as a ten percent penalty. Some plans offer loan options, which let you pay back the money over time without penalty or tax consequence. This isn’t something to do lightly, however if there comes a time when you need the money, it can be a real lifesaver. Factor these monies into your safety net calculations.
Finally, if you have equity in your home, investigate a home equity line of credit. The secret is to apply for it while you’re still working and are a desirable customer for the lender, rather than waiting until you lose a job and become a lending risk. Tap into the equity line for a small amount every six months or so, and then pay it back, to keep the account active and make the lender happy.
No one wants to employ these maneuvers. But desperate times can call for desperate measures.

Questions from our Readers
Answered by Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine
I have followed all the advice both you and the professionals have written. I have several resumes that emphasize different parts of my career and skills, I have cover letters that augment the resumes, I network daily, I am on LinkedIn and spend at least two hours a day on it, expanding my network, asking questions, answering questions, I videotape myself in mock interviews, I am working hard at this and I am still unemployed. What advice can you offer someone who has done everything right, and still has no job? And please something more specific than, “keep on trying.” I’ve heard that one already from my friends.
Most tribes of hunter-gatherers were nomadic. That wasn’t because they enjoyed pulling up stakes and moving. It was because they knew that when the game and pickings grew slim in one place, they had to find another. Take that lesson to heart. It sounds like you need to find a new hunting ground. That could mean looking for jobs in different industries, looking for jobs in different cities or regions, or both. It could also mean you’ve got to reduce your expectations. Sure, it’s great if you can take down a deer. But if food is getting scarce a rabbit might have to suffice.
Should I ever attempt humor during an interview? My friends seem to think I am pretty funny, and since the jobs I am looking for are in Marketing, I would think that humor would be welcomed. I am not talking about doing stand up, but is it too risky to try some subtle humor during interviews?
Three job interviewers walk into a bar and sit down next to a funny guy who’s out of work. The unemployed guys tells them all a joke. The joke is a good one that’s neither dirty nor controversial. The first job interviewer has no sense of humor and doesn’t get the joke. He tells the funny guy he doesn’t get the job, and walks out. The second job interviewer has a pretty good sense of humor, but doesn’t think the joke is all that good. He tells the funny guy he doesn’t get the job, and walks out. The third job interviewer has a great sense of humor, thinks the joke is pretty good, but feels like the funny guy isn’t taking the situation, the job, or himself, seriously enough. He tells the funny guy he doesn’t get the job, and walks out. The funny guy finds himself sitting at the bar, alone and still unemployed.
