Knowing what questions companies typically ask, can help you prepare for a new job. Although each company has their own checklist of questions to ask listed references, some of the more common ones are listed below. For purposes of this article, the candidate’s name is John. Also know that many companies believe it is unethical to ask a reference these very specific questions about a previous employee. For that matter, many employers will tell you they cannot or will not answers these specific questions, out of concern for getting nailed for spreading negative comments about a former employee. With that said, there are always those who don’t mind answering whatever question is thrown at them, so all the more reason to be 100% sure what your previous employer will say if asked about your performance. The Basics: When did John work at Cynopsis? Work Habits: How much was John making when he left? Social Skills: How did John get along with co-workers and management? Most people are unprepared for salary negotiations. They haven’t done the necessary homework to be prepared for the discussion. You probably are just happy to have a job and feel it’s not necessary to negotiate. You don’t want to rock the boat. Maybe, you’ve been out of work for nine months and all you want is a job because your self-confidence is so low and you don’t care what they pay you. You’ll accept whatever they offer. This is not what you want to do. You need to negotiate before you accept any offer. You have very little to lose and a lot to gain. The key thing about negotiation is the impact it has on the long-term income you create. Whatever base income you arrive at is where you start from for each raise. The higher your base income, the higher the percentage of raises you will receive in the lifetime of your career. For example, if you are making $80,000 and you get a standard 10% raise, you will only get $8,000 more dollars per year. However, if you negotiated before taking the job and were able to get $110,000, 10% would be $11,000. That’s $3000 more per year. As you consider how to ask for a raise, it’s equally important to be prepared for salary negotiation. No matter if you’ve been in your job for 15 years or are just starting out and need tips on job offer salary negotiation, the following information can help you get paid what you’re worth. Realize the amount you lose by settling for less. Know your worth. Understand that negotiation involves three key elements. Joel Garfinkle’s proven 10-Step Salary Negotiation Program teaches salary negotiation strategies to help you get the pay, benefits and perks that you deserve. Hundreds of clients have benefitted from Joel’s program. Click here for his FREE Salary Negotiation Strategies and Tips on Asking for a Raise. So many companies have such a long history, when experts say learn as much as you can about a company before you interview with them, where does it stop? What do I really need to know about a company before I interview? I am a salesman and would like specifics if possible. The more you learn about the company, the better your questions and perspective going into the interview. You need to interview them, just as they are interviewing you. By conducting a “background check” on the company, you’ll identify issues, challenges and concerns that you can bring up during the interview. It’s better to do this now and not after you’ve accepted the job. Here are four things you should know about a company before you interview: What is the culture of the company and division you’ll be working for? Research the type of work environment, how result-driven is the company, the number of hours and level of expectations placed on employees. Who are the people you’ll be working for (boss, bosses’ boss and peers)? Spend time researching the people you’ll be working for. Understand their background, experience and the other types of companies they’ve worked for. How is the company financially doing and is it set-up to be successful in the future? Look at annual report and research what the investment community is saying about the current and future state of the company. What does the company do, what are the products or services provided and who are the competitors? Identify the basics of what the company does and the products it produces. The more you can learn about the company and its competitors, the easier it is to determine the viability of the company. On my last interview, due to nerves, I let out an unexpected burp. I made light of the situation by joking about it and moved on. My friends say that I might have brought to much attention to the situation and now it’s something the interviewer will remember. Who is right? Should I just have said excuse me and pretend it didn’t happen or should I try to make light of an awkward situation? Making light of a situation can be effective in interactions with friends or people you just met at a party. However, in an interview you are being judged by everything you do. Your objective is to eliminate any doubt from their mind. When you burped, you created an opportunity for them to question your social skills and etiquette. Even though it was unintentional, you lessened your chance of moving to the next round of interviews. The best way to handle this situation is to say “excuse me” and move on as if it didn’t happen. The less attention you put on the situation, the better. Joel Garfinkle is the author of 6 books and is recognized as one of the top 50coaches in America.
