Apple, now the second biggest company in the U.S. in terms of market capitalization, beat the street once again during Q3, posting record revenue of $20.34 billion and net quarterly profit of $4.31 billion. During the quarter, the company sold 3.89 million Macs, (up 27% y/y), 14.1 million iPhones (+91%), 9 million iPods (-11%), 4.2 million iPads and 250k new Apple TV boxes. During an earnings call with analysts, Steve Jobs crowed about the success of the iPad (35,000 apps and counting,) claiming that education and business sectors were showing “tremendous interest” in the platform. Apple also said it is pushing to make the iPhone 4 more appealing to business users and will unveil a new version of its Mac OS on Wednesday targeted toward the corporate world – a space that rival Microsoft has owned for more than two decades.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Music video portal Vevo struck a video syndication partnership with Univision to distribute major label music videos to the network’s new UnivisionMusica site as well as across the company’s local TV and radio station websites.
 
Downloading Netflix movies and shows from the Nintendo Wii console will also now no longer requires a disc. Don’t expect to see content streamed in 1080p, however – a feature just enabled for Sony PS3 users.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Michael Eisner’s Torante investment firm is seeding an L.A-based game developer Diversion, which is preparing to launch a celebrity-themed Facebook game called Fametown on Nov. 1. The players’ goal will be to accumulate points to move from the “D-List” to the “A-List,”” according to the company’s site. Diversion has already landed Sony Pictures as a sponsor, which will be promoting its upcoming feature film Burlesque within the game.
 
BlueCava, a start-up that has developed a technology for fingerprinting internet-connected devices, has secured a $5 million round of series A funding led by billionaire investor and HDNet founder Mark Cuban, who will join the company’s board. BlueCava’s business model makes it much cheaper than traditional methods for companies to protect against unauthorized usage, charging 1/100th of a cent per device identification transaction and 1/10th of a cent per device reputation transaction.
 
The Daily Meal is a new foodie site from Spanfeller Media Group (SMG) offering restaurant reviews, recipes, chef exposes, recipes, travel guides and meal planning crib notes. Food and wine writer Colman Andrews will serve as Editorial Director and Valaer Murray as Managing Editor.
 
Knots Landing star Joan Van Ark is starring in season 2 of Steve Silverman’s original web series Pretty, a spoof on children’s beauty pageants in the tradition of “Little Miss Sunshine.”

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Blue Lithium founder Gurbaksh Chahal has launched a new online ad network dubbed RadiumOne that utilizes social networking data to target users. In a process it calls “social retargeting,” RadiumOne (formerly gWallet) says it will mine data users share such as links, blog posts and videos to form social clusters of users who share common interests and passions. The idea is to analyze social interactions anonymously to place users in the proper buckets. Advertisers will then be able to target audiences that have shown an affinity for like and kind products.
 
Search retargeting company Magnetic unveiled a solution to help retailers serve dynamic display ads to people who are searching for specific products on search engines and comparison shopping sites. Powered by ad creative company Tumri, the system uses search data to target audiences in display media to help advertisers and publishers apply search data to lift campaign performance.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Online ad network Specific Media has acquired video ad network Broadband Enterprises (BBE), creator of original web series such as the Webby Award winning Jen and Barb Mom’s Life and operator of the Vindico ad serving platform. BBE’s current media operations will be integrated into Specific Media, with the BBE brand continuing as an independent subsidiary, to be led by President Matt Timothy.
 
Clearwire
, Comcast and Sprint announced the timing for the commercial launch of the 4G network services in New York City, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area under the company’s individual brands (Clear, Xfinity Internet 2go and Sprint 4G, respectively). The New York City launch will occur Nov. 1; the Los Angeles launch on Dec. 1 with the San Francisco launch slated for late December. Sprint says 4G devices, such as the currently available HTV EVO and Samsung Epic, are capable of download speeds of 3-6 Mbps, some 10x faster than most 3G networks.
 
FremantleMedia
is upping its minority state in Montreal-based game developer Ludia to a controlling 80%. Ludia makes casual games for several Fremantle game shows including The Price is Rate and Family Feud.
 
The fruits of a partnership announced between Rovi and EBIF-app specialist ForthWall Media last Feb. have borne fruit in a new ETV/EBIF and TV Widgets solution, being deployed by 175k sub, PA.-based Blue Ridge Communications directly thorough the Rovi Passport Guide. The integration, which includes a handful of TV-based apps providing news, weather, sports, finance, yellow pages and eBay info, will allow systems that use the Passport Guide to offer a relatively quick-to-deploy way to offer customers basic interactive apps through existing set-top boxes, according to Dave Jordan, Rovi’s VP of Marketing.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Android revenue exceeded iPhone-only revenue for the first time on the Millennial ad network amidst strong raw iOS impression growth, according to Millennial Media‘s monthly mobile mix device report. Android ad requests increased 26% month-over-month and are up an astounding 1283% since January. Other findings included:

  • iPad revenue growth increased 316% and impression growth increased 156% during Q3
  • RIM devices represented five of the Top 20 Mobile Phones – The BlackBerry Curve maintained its number three position for the second consecutive month
  • Last year’s top device maker Apple accounted for a 30% share of impressions on Millennial’s network in September
  • Motorola jumped ahead of Samsung to become the #2 device manufacturer
  • The top 4 connected devices were the iPod Touch, iPad, Sony PSP, and the Sony PS3

              

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Showtime Networks launched a new interactive app that allows non-subscribers to sample the network’s programming and instantly order up the premium network with a click of the remote. The Showtime Preview app will debut on Verizon’s FiOS TV platform.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Microsoft Chief Software Architect and resident cloud computing expert Ray Ozzie is stepping down in the coming weeks, according to an email circulated in Redmond. Ray will stay on during a transitional period and consult with the company on future entertainment-related projects.
 
Zenith Media is integrating its magazine and digital divisions to emphasize a more cross-platform, content centric approach to media. The new unit will be led by SVP, Managing Director of Digital, John Nitti, who has already begun integration into the Zenith fold.
 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Facebook has gotten caught with its hand in the data cookie jar once again. Dozens of the most popular Facebook apps including Zynga’s wildly popular Farmville were found to share users’ personal information (including friend’s names) with advertisers even though they had set their profiles to the strictest privacy settings, according to an investigation by the WSJ. Unique Facebook ID numbers used to identify actual people are being compiled and sold to third parties by data gathering firms such as RapLeaf, according to the report. Facebook has said it is working to put an end to any inadvertent data sharing, but has admitted such pilfering has occurred. “In most cases, developers did not intend to pass this information, but did so because of the technical details of how browsers work,” the Facebook developer blog states. Social gaming publisher LOLapps (Dante’s Inferno, Yakuza Lords) was restored to Facebook after its 150 million users were unable to log on over the weekend because of related violation in Facebook’s privacy policies. It’s hard to think that the social networking juggernaut will be able to survive an unlimited amount of these lapses before users begin to lose trust in the platform en masse.
