Good morning – it’s Tuesday, October 18, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Whenever I write an article on grammar, I receive a lot of mail asking for more. Wish granted.
Sometime v. Some time
Sometime is the more indefinite term as in, “I’ll see you sometime later.” Some time is more definitive, as in, “I’ll see you some time next week.”
Request v. Ask
Save the word request for formal occasions, use ask in more casual communications.
So v. Very
You made me so angry. How angry is that? It’s hard to tell, especially in written form. Using very, rather than so, in most cases will communicate your feelings more precisely.
Reticent v. Hesitant
Technically speaking, reticent is defined as disposed to be silent or not speak freely. Hesitant usually refers to being reluctant to do something, like ski down a double black diamond slope.
Replete v. Complete
Replete is to be full or overflowing and though complete can, at times, be used the same way, it’s better to stick with complete when you have a choice.
Collaborate v. Corroborate
When you work with someone, you collaborate. When people strengthen your story by confirming it, it’s corroborate.
Imply v. Infer
Imply is to suggest without being explicit, infer is to derive by reasoning, to conclude or judge, based on evidence.
Submittal v. Submission
Submittal is the act of submitting, submission is the item you have submitted.
Everyone v. Every one
Everyone means everybody in a group. Every one refers to all the individuals within a group. Everyone is finally here. I wish to thank every one of you.
Chose v. Choose
Chose is past tense, choose is the present.
Therefor v. Therefore
Therfor is an archaic legal term, so use therefore when you mean as a result or consequently.
Dialogue v. Discuss
To use Dialogue as a verb is technically wrong, though becoming more common. To have a dialogue or to discuss a subject is correct.
Upmost v. Utmost
Upmost is defined as uppermost, referring to something on top. Utmost means to the greatest degree or amount.
Everyday v. Every day
Everyday is an adjective, every day is an adverbial phrase. If you do something seven days a week, you do it every day.
Hyphens v. Dashes
Hyphens tend to link elements together, dashes separate them.
Infact
Always two words.
Everytime
See above.
Respond back.
Respond means to answer, so adding back becomes redundant. I receive so many emails that anxiously wait for me to respond back, it might be better to simply write, awaiting your reply.
Very unique
Unique is one of a kind, a sole example of. Nothing can be very one of a kind. Drop the very, unique says it all.
In regard to
In regard to, though technically correct, is a bit awkward. Replace it with regarding.

Now and then we all need a helping hand, so wouldn’t it be good to know that with a little judicious application of non-verbal communication we could increase the chances of getting that help when we need it?
Psychologists have discovered that people respond better to requests for help when the person doing the asking engages them with a light touch on the upper arm.
We’re not talking about the politician’s grasping of the bicep or elbow when shaking hands here, or indeed anything more intrusive or threatening than a slight touch with the fingertips on an area around midway between the elbow and the shoulder, on the outside of the arm, generally lasting no more than a matter of a second or two.
In field studies it was found that making a request (and the requests in these studies ranged from asking for a dime on the street to asking people for a dance in a nightclub) accompanied by the lightest of touches to the upper arm had, on average, around a 20% better chance of gaining a positive response than the same request without the touch.
Put this into the context of the workplace and you will see that there are a huge number of circumstances in which an increased chance of help or support might be of value. For example, when making a proposal for which you might benefit from some additional support, asking for that support along with the all-important touch on the arm could well get you the help you need.
I tested this myself with a client who was tasked with having his print job rushed through, despite having several other jobs lined up ahead of him. He approached the print manager, asked that his work be prioritized – touched him gently on the upper arm and despite a couple of token grumbles, had his print request completed straight away.
I know that this test isn’t scientific – just one sample – but what I didn’t tell you was that the same guy had similar requests turned down repeatedly by the same print manager, and in fact had NEVER been given priority in the print queue in three years of asking!
Use this knowledge wisely…and don’t tell anyone I told you!

Is Google Plus another social media I have to join to network? How does it differ from the others? Will it help me get a job?
Yes, Google Plus is another social network (I nearly wrote ‘yet another’ there, but stopped myself in time). How does it differ from the rest? Well, that remains to be seen.
Any social network platform such as Google Plus, Facebook, LinkedIn etc. is just that: a platform. It provides a means by which you can communicate with and build your network. It isn’t a network in and of itself. Therefore it’s up to the users to decide collectively whether and how it differs from any other such platform.
Facebook has evolved into something which is primarily non-business (though of course business is done there, and not just through advertising), while LinkedIn is principally seen as a business network forum, and people deal with it as such, though there’s still social communication going on there.
Google Plus is too new and fresh to have its users define its focus, but I would suggest that it’ll end up being about social rather than business networking.
A final word: No matter how global a phenomenon social networking is, nothing will get you noticed as fast and as effectively as real, face-to-face networking. Use your online presence to learn about and to book yourself into appropriate gatherings of real people in real places.
And no…you don’t have to join any social network site to be successful. Until employers ask you to put your social media affiliations on your application, you can choose what sites you join or not join.
Is it difficult to get a job in Europe now, if I am from the United States? I hear about the economic woes, and I was wondering what the job market is like and if companies are even considering Americans for job positions.
Getting a job in Europe is tough no matter where you come from, and no matter what the economic climate. Just because it’s tough doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It just means that if you are good enough to land the job, then you will, no matter where you come from.
As for the woes don’t believe everything you hear on Fox News. It’s no different in Europe than in the USA. The whole world owes money to the rest of the whole world, but the whole world keeps turning all the same, and programs are made and watched, new stuff is commissioned, people are employed. All that’s changed (in my view) is that some employers are using financial hardship (real or imagined) as an excuse to cut down on staffing and to make people work harder, but this is just rationalization, and this goes on at some level all the time, regardless of the greater economic picture.
If you want to come to Europe, and you can do your thing better than the next person then you are as attractive a proposition to an employer as anyone.

Conde Nast has named Dawn Ostroff effective immediately to the newly-created role as President/Conde Nast Entertainment. In her new role, Dawn will head the development, creation, production and distribution of original television, film and digital efforts based on the company’s roster of brands. Prior to this present appointment, Dawn served as President/Entertainment at The CW Network from 2006 to 2011 and before that was President of the UPN Network from 2002 to 2006 as well as EVP/Entertainment at Lifetime Television from 1996 to 2002.

Former Syfy SVP/Brand and Strategic Marketing executive, Blake Callaway joins IFC as SVP/Marketing beginning October 31. Sean Perry was elected as the new President of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS) by its Board of Directors. Venevision, the Venezuelan-based television channel and production company of the Cisneros Group of Companies welcomes back Jonathan Blum as VP/GM. Venevision has made organizational changes at the station which reflect in Jonathan’s rehiring. Previously, he served as Venevision’s Director/Development from 2001 to 2008. Manuel Fraiz-Grijalba, EVP at Venevision will manage all issues related to production, programming, image and promotions. Jonathan in his new job will head engineering and technical operations as well as production services and the departments of Marketing, Sales, Alternative Media, Administration and Finance, Human Resources, and Legal and Security.
Jon Slusser was appointed to the newly-minted role of SVP/Sports and Multi-Platform Programming at Spike TV. Jon will create live, multi-platform socially-driven events aimed at the network’s growing male audience. Based in Los Angeles, Jon will report to Kevin Kay, President, Spike TV.
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) advanced Paula Askanas to EVP/Communications where she supervises business and trade press, international communication for the television company globally. Furthermore, Paula is involved in disseminating information about the developments, positions and scope of SPT’s operations to US and international media and to SPT employees among other duties. Paula reports to Steve Mosko, President, SPT.
Alex Sepiol received a promotion from USA Network to SVP/Original Scripted Series Programming. Alex oversees the production of several of USA’s series, White Collar and Burn Notice as well as Suits and Fairly Legal and more. Alex continues to report to Bill McGoldrick, SVP/Original Scripted Programming.
George McTeague was hired by Gigantc! Productions as SVP/Production and Development. George was the former VP/East Coast Development at MTV and in his 18 years as a producer and creator of original programming has served as executive producer on formats such as Made, House of Style, Cuff’d and many more. In his new role at Gigantic, George will focus on production and development of current and future projects.
TLC appointed Alon Orstein as VP/Production and Development, East Coast where he will manage editorial and execution on series and specials while strengthening relationships with external production partners. Alon is based at TLC’s Silver Spring, MD headquarters and reports to Howard Lee, SVP/Production and Development. In addition, TLC tapped Timothy Kuryak as VP/Production and Development, West Coast. Timothy will supervise the West Coast production group and network with the production community as well as work closely with the network’s headquarters in MD. Timothy will be based in Los Angeles.
As of November 1, Lee Cowan rejoins CBS News as National Correspondent based in Los Angeles. Lee will further contribute to CBS News broadcasts and platforms across the division and he will also be a substitute anchor for CBS Sunday Morning.
Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Group company elevated John Greco to VP/Production and added Cara Goldberg as Executive in Charge of Production. John has been with the company since July 2008 and has managed production on series including E!’s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, MTV’s The Real World, Oxygen’s Love Games among others. Presently, John is heading production of Best Ink which is set to premiere later this year on Oxygen. Cara most recently was with Dick Clark Productions where she was Executive in Charge of Production. Former anchor/managing editor of ABC News’ Nightline, Ted Koppel joined NBC News’ as a Special Correspondent for Rock Center with Brian Williams. The new primetime newsmagazine program is premiering October 31 at 10p.

MSG Entertainment (MSGE) appointed Amy Stevens as SVP/Marketing Concerts and Media Integration. Effective immediately, Spanish Broadcasting System Inc. (SBS) named Gerardo Reyes as GSM for MegaTV KTBU in Houston. Gerardo will head regional spot sales for the station as well as manage local sales representatives.
Media agency MEC announced Marla Kaplowitz will become CEO for MEC North America. Marla succeeds Lee Doyle in this role after Lee stepped down. Marla will report to Charles Courtier and be part of MEC’s Global Executive Committee.
