Univision’s sister network, TeleFutura is set to launch its first-ever late night show, Noche de Perros (Guys Night Out) beginning October 31 at 11p.  Co-hosted by Carlos Calderon, Gabriel Varela and Daniel Carles, the show targets male viewers with a bachelor pad-style set including a bar and a pet bulldog as the show’s mascot.  The host trio will not provide a monologue but rather open the show with a discussion on current events, mostly sports and news, as well as other manly topics like women.  The show will also sport a house band and celebrity guests. TeleFutura has agreed to 250 episodes of Noche de Perros for the first year.

A fifth season is in the pipeline for Sons of Anarchy on FX.  The network ordered a 13-episode fifth season from Fox 21 and FX Productions.  Presently in its fourth season, Sons of Anarchy is averaging 5.8 million total million and 3.9 million among A18-49, an increase of +30% and +26% respectively over season three. The premiere episode of season four, that launched September 6, also has the distinction of being the most-watched program in FX’s history with 6.5 million total viewers.

Exploring the question of what it is like to be Muslim in America, TLC premieres a new eight-part series, All-American Muslim on November 13 at 10p.  The series will go inside the world of five American Muslim families living in Dearborn, MI as they try to balance faith and nationality in a post-9/11 world.

Fast food company McDonald’s is getting into the TV business by launching an in-store digital TV network, The McDonald’s Channel in twenty locations around the country featuring local news, sports, movie and TV show previews, entertainment segments and human interest stories.  Content partners for The McDonald’s Channel include Mark Burnett’s digital production company Vimby as well as BBC America and KABC-TV Eyewitness News among others.  The new digital network will include customized programming aiming at specific communities which will roll out over the coming months.  ChannelPort Communications, involved with the channel launch and content strategy, says The McDonald’s Channel may reach 18 million to 20 million people every month.  Since December 2008, The McDonald’s Channel has been tested in a store in California and one in Las Vegas.

Father and son antique dealers, Jerry and Jeremiah Pasternak star in a new six-part series on Planet Green called Born Dealers debuting November 5 at 10p.  Born Dealers follows the father-son duo as they search for treasures in dusty antique stores, garages and old storage barns.  Born Dealers is produced by Proper Television for Planet Green.

Next month, SPEED gears up with a new game show series Pumped! by airing back-to-back episodes starting November 17 at 9p.  Produced by Leopard Films USA, the company behind House Hunters International and part of the Argonon group, Pumped! is hosted by comedian Greg Fitzsimmons.  The series will watch as Fitzsimmons waits at Sunoco gas stations in and around the New York tri-state area and surprises unsuspecting patrons with a chance to win $1,800 by answering a series of trivia questions. 

MTV is notching a second season of Ridiculousness featuring Rob Dyrdek as he presents funny amateur viral videos.  Ridiculousness airs at 10p on Mondays.  The series is currently MTV’s second highest-rated program with males 12-34 behind Jersey Shore and it also averages a 1.8 rating with P12-34 and 1.9 million viewers each week.  The series is produced by Dickhouse.

The 24-hour college network, mtvU launches a new short-form reality series Quiet Campus next Monday at 12p.  The docu-series follows the lives of four deaf college students who attend Washington D.C.’s Gallaudet University, a top liberal arts institution for deaf and hard of hearing students. 

A seventh season of Quiero Mis Quinces on MTV, Musica y Mas began this Monday and airs each Monday night at 7p.  The series goes behind the scenes as teens prepare for their coming-of-age celebrations.

Sunday’s sophomore season premiere of The Walking Dead on AMC at 9p posted the best telecast for any drama in basic cable history.  The original series’ season two opener delivered 4.8 million among A18-49; 4.2 million with A25-54; and 7.3 million total viewers.  Combining the series’ 9p, 1030p and 1230a airings, The Walking Dead delivered a cume of 11 million total viewers.

~  DISTRIBUTION , CLEARANCE &  COVERAGE ~

After an approximate month and a half dispute, LIN Media and cable MSO Mediacom reached a new retransmission consent deal.  LIN’s television stations have been dark on Mediacom systems since early September and those markets affected include Mobile, AL-Pensacola, FL; Grand Rapids, MI; Green Bay, WI: Fort Wayne, IN; Terre Haute, IN; and Lafayette, IN.  One market though was not affected by the blackout and that was the Norfolk-Portsmouth-Newport News DMA.  LIN approved Mediacom to let the stations’ WAVY (NBC) and WVBT (FOX) in this DMA continue on air with local news coverage during Hurricane Irene. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

UK comedy series White Van Man is being developed for ABC by ITV Studios America.  Based on the ITV Studios series produced for BBC Three, White Van Man is about a man who is forced to put his own business dreams on hold to run his family’s blue collar business.  Bobby Bowman is on board to write the US adaptation for ABC Studios and studio-based The Mark Gordon Company. White Man Van also has become BBC Three’s highest-rated debut sitcom and was written by Adrian Poynton.  Production on the UK’s version season two is underway.

A new comedy pilot is on the docket for Comedy Central from Charlie Siskel the writer and EP of the network’s unscripted series Tosh.0.  Review with Forrest MacNeil is a half-hour dark comedy about an overly earnest critic who reviews difficult life situations by living them as decided by his TV audience.  The project is based on an Australian show, Review with Myles Barlow.  Andrew Daly, who will play Forrest, will also join Siskel as EP and writer. 

Jennie Snyder Urman (90210) is working on dual projects for The CW Network and CBS via CBS Television Studios, reports Variety.  The CBS project centers on a previously-married private eye couple who get together professionally after their respective fortunes dip.  Ole, the CBS-based production partnership of Richard Shepard and producers Bryan and Sean Furst is also involved in developing the project.  Urman will write the script and serve as EP with Shepard and the Fursts.  The second project for The CW is about a female medical student who finds out working as an intern at a big hospital is similar to high school days.  Urman will write this project as well as be executive producer with Dan Jinks.    

Former ABC’s Lost alum Hiroyuki Sanada landed a recurring role on ABC’s Revenge, cites EW.  Sanada will play Kioshi Takeda, a Japanese business man who has mysterious ties to Emily Thorne (Emily Van Camp).  He first appears in episode nine.

Frosh series A Gifted Man on CBS added Tom Wopat (Dukes of Hazzard) as the husband of Rita (Margo Martindale), per TVLine.  Wopat plays Len Sr. who is described as a truck driver who spends a lot of time on the road though has a close relationship with his wife.  Wopat will debut on the series in November.

Correction: In Monday’s edition, we incorrectly identified the series The Killing’s network.  The Killing airs on AMC and the drama was renewed by AMC for a 10-episode second season for next summer.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  A re-do from last week, CBS and Univision again tied for #1 with the A18-49 viewers Friday at 1.5/5 each, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Univision won the 8p hour with Una Familia con Suerte at 1.6/6 followed by FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares at 1.4/5 with a repeat of Last Man Standing on ABC coming in a close third at 1.3/5.  Univision stayed firmly in first place at 9p with La Fuerza del Destino at 1.9/6 and CBS was #2 with CSI: NY at 1.7/5.  CBS became the leader at 10p with Blue Bloods at 1.8/5 and NBC’s Dateline was next at 1.7/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Marketing company Media Ventures Group tapped William Apfelbaum as Chairman effective immediately.  William joins the company from Titan Worldwide where he served as Chairman after establishing the company in 2001.

John Miller was appointed as Senior Correspondent for CBS News where he will be integral in the mornings on CBS News.  John will additionally report for all CBS News platforms and broadcasts and from time to time on 60 Minutes.

WPP-owned brand strategy and design consulting firm, The Brand Union hired Jodi Sutherland as Group Director/Client Services.  Jodi is charged with finding ways to upgrade existing client services in addition to offering oversight for all consumer branding, packaging and environmental projects.  Jodi is based in New York City.

Beginning this week, NBC Owned Television Stations is adding Christine Dorfler as CFO.  Christine will manage the financial tasks for NBC’s 10 owned stations and their associated platforms as well as heading business strategy for the stations around core financial processes.  Christine reports to Valari Staab, President, NBC Owned Stations.

Teresa McMenamin becomes Director/Media Buying and Agency Relations with Universal Music Group Distribution (UMGD), the sales and marketing unit of Universal Music Group (UMG).  Teresa will spearhead the relationship between UMGD and MediaCom, the company that was recently chosen to manage the company’s media planning and buying in the US.  Teresa reports to Mavis Takemoto, EVP/Administration and Operations.

Premium music video and entertainment platform, VEVO tagged Jim Macnie to the newly-minted role of Editorial Director.  Jim will oversee all editorial scope for VEVO while based in New York and reporting to Scott Reich, VP/Original Content and Programming.

Effective immediately, Carla Carpenter received a promotion to SVP/Digital Media for the ABC Owned Television Stations Group.  Most recently, Carla was the VP/News Director at ABC owned WPVI/Philadelphia.  In her new role, Carla will head the continuing development and execution of station group activity into the digital realm.  Carla now reports to Rebecca Campbell, President, ABC Owned Television Stations Group.

Eric Becker advances to VP/Corporate Communications for Starz Entertainment and Starz Media.  Eric will oversee corporate communications for the two entities’ businesses encompassing Worldwide Distribution, Starz Digital Media units and other holdings.
