Cynopsis: Sports
10/18/11
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 18, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With a battle officially set between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers, FOX Sports has official announced its broadcast team for the World Series and Game 1 set for Wednesday at 7:30p. Joe Buck will return as the World Series Play-By-Play Announcer, with Tim McCarver back in the booth as Lead Analyst. Eric Karros and A.J. Pierzynski will serve as Pregame Analysts of the Fall Classic.
After several teams were rumored to be sniffing around Monday Night Football Analyst Jon Gruden for potential coaching positions, ESPN went proactive and locked him up with a five-year extension that will keep Gruden on the air and off the sidelines through 2017. Since joining ESPN in May 2009, Gruden has earned two Sports Emmy Award nominations in the Best Analyst category and contributed to ESPN’s annual NFL Draft and Super Bowl week coverage and other platforms. In addition to his NFL duties, Gruden called a several college football telecasts for ESPN, including the Rose Bowl (2010) and Bowl Championship Series National Championship games (2010 and 2011) for ESPN Radio, and the 2011 Outback and Orange bowl games.
NFL Films has brought in Vivendi Entertainment to serve as the exclusive distributor for NFL Films home entertainment programming in the US and Canada. The new deal marks the first time that the league has granted both digital and physical (DVD/Blu-ray) rights for its home entertainment business. As part of the multi-year agreement, VE will now take over the exclusive US and Canadian marketing and distribution of NFL titles and leverage programming across physical and digital platforms. The release schedule is now slated for at least 7-10 new DVD releases each year.
Early ratings numbers indicate that FOX has a nice weekend, with a tight Dallas/New England game in the afternoon potentially giving the channel its best afternoon Sunday NFL rating since 2002. The matchup drew a 19.1 overnight rating, according to Nielsen Media Research, up 10% from last year’s Dallas/Minnesota in the time slot last year. Early-game action on the channel, which was led by a San Francisco/Detroit contest, drew a 12.4, up 46% year-to-year. A blowout game on NBC’s SNF delivered the channel with a 11.2 overnight, down 15% from last year’s coverage of the Indianapolis/Washington game.
ESPN has locked in a record high of 108 women’s college basketball games this season for its family of networks. This is in addition to ESPN FULL COURT’s coverage, for a total number of matchups around 250 games. ESPN networks will also air all 63 games of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship in March. ESPN2 is set to televise 31 regular-season games, including the network’s season-opening matchup featuring Miami/Tennessee in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic. ESPNU will offer 40 games, including 23 regular-season and 17 conference championship matchups.
ESPN is turning to Florida Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen during the World Series, where he will join Baseball Tonight as an analyst. Guillen will appear on Baseball Tonight’s pregame as well as postgame shows where he will join host Karl Ravech and analysts John Kruk and Barry Larkin.
ITV and ESPN have acquired media rights to the 201215 UEFA Europa League in the UK. As part of the deal, ITV gets to air the top two live matches each week on ITV4 as well as a round-up of the night’s games. In addition, ITV4 will show a full weekly highlights programme on Fridays each matchweek. Meanwhile, ESPN gets rights to all remaining UEFA Europa League matches
As the clock ticks down to the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympic Games, the USOC is looking to drive awareness and support via an online campaign. The organization created online series Team USA: Britain Bound, which features seven Team USA Olympic and Paralympic champions exploring the country by visiting Stonehenge, Buckingham Palace, the Highlands, etc. The webisodes will run through Nov. 14 and return on Jan. 9. You can watch the webisodes at www.TeamUSA.org/BritainBound.
Change.org has locked in over 7,500 fans asking the San Francisco 49ers to become the first NFL team to join in and produce an “It Gets Better” video as part of the campaign to prevent discrimination of gay youth, or those perceived to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Eight MLB teams produced the videos over the summer, although no NFL teams have participated. A 49ers spokesperson told CBS 5 news that they had not received a request to make the video but if they did, they would probably take part.
The Atlantic Coast Conference opened another door in its array of media properties with the launch of the ACC Digital Network. The platform was created as a “fully programmed video network designed, produced, and distributed exclusively for audiences watching on connected devices such as laptops and smartphones.” The Digital Network is a joint venture between Raycom Sports and Silver Chalice Ventures. Talent is set to include former NBATV and NBA.com host Kyle Montgomery.
Once again, UFC is turning to Facebook to play host of the five UFC 137 fights not picked for the evening’s broadcasts where they will be streamed to fans for free. UFC 137 takes place Oct. 29 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The Main Event
